Hello ASL Heroes!!! Hey, I could really use your help. If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you. A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com. Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!” www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=64QMBRBXQSV6G Thanks! - Dr. Bill p.s. Want to have your very own USB drive with four semesters worth of ASL instruction (that’s the equivalent of two years of colleges classes) for just $79.95? See "SuperUSB" in the ASLUniversity bookstore at: lifeprint.com/bookstore/bookstore.htm Take care and love to you all. :)

I was called to learn to sign for some reason and started out with a few different online resources but you, by far are the best in terms of repetition and course structure. With a sense of humor, you make learning fun! I have been studying 3 hrs every morning for 4 months and am now finally comfortable to be accepted into the deaf community. Thank you so much, Bill! I'm going to keep learning and I am so grateful for your time. Regina

Regina, Hello! Now THAT is an impressive amount of study! (3-hrs x every-morning for four months = 3 x 30 x 4 = 360 hours. A minor in Sign Language at my day job only takes about 240 hours. A "major" only takes 410 classroom contact hours (plus another 800 or so of practice and homework -- which many students don't do and wonder why they can't understand ASL upon graduation). So, BRAVO to you! If you are into Facebook here's the official Lifeprint "ASLU" group: facebook.com/groups/Lifeprint.ASLU/ Note: That group is highly moderated and requires filling out a questionnaire / application to get in.

Yes, she is saying that she took the course with a different teacher and earned an "A." (That is the sign where she puts the "A" on the palm.)

Hi Bill! In this lesson, arithmetic questions are asked in the form "number-1 ADD/DIVIDE/etc number-2 EQUAL WHAT-wh?". I have a fun question. Extrapolating from what I've learnt, would it be valid/natural to just inflect the sign EQUAL with a wh-face (furrowed brows + general inquisitiveness), like "12 DIVIDE 2 EQUALS-wh?" Also, any theories as to why FAIL uses a K/P handshape on the dominant hand? It's clearly not an initialization. It kind of looks like a person sliding off a surface (fail!) but why not use a V or 1 hand then? (Not claiming all signs have to be iconic. Just wondering out loud.) Thank you for your videos and resources :) You are a legend!
@sign-language
@sign-language 7 жыл бұрын
You are right that adding furrowed eyebrows to the EQUAL sign does indeed create a meaning such as "Equals what?" Also, it seems to me that the FAIL-[general-version] sign kzbin.info/www/bejne/b36saXR4g6-YpsU is indeed based on the concept of a person sliding across a surface. It isn't based on initialization but rather a natural mutation of the "V" handshape. Hmmm, it would be interesting to see if the French word for "fail" involved either a K or P. Check out this version of "lose competition" kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3XJZntmra5khbc

At 23:49-23:55 Dr. Bill is explaining why he thinks some senior girls are stuck up. I understand when he explains that most girls are friendly and only a few are stuck up. But I can't catch what he says after "I think older..." Can anyone help me, please?
@sign-language

Well first of all I'd like to mention that some of the practice sentences are designed to provide opportunities to deny, object, or refute what has been stated or asked. In the video I suggested that it might be that a few of them were due to "graduating soon." I stated the "graduate soon" concept twice using a different sign for "soon" each time. Soon version 1: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppyxkn-ChrCoi7c Soon version 2: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqqTlIuwaNmMoq8 There is also a nose version and a cheek version of "soon" -- but those two versions above are fairly common.

@@sign-language Wonderful! Thank you for the quick response. I thought your right hand was forming “D” and not “G” so I couldn’t figure out that you were saying graduate. I’m glad I got both versions of “soon” though. Again, thank you so much!

@sign-language
@sign-language 4 жыл бұрын
The sign is actually FEED and many of us use it to mean "nutrition." Lots of people also use an "N" pivoting on the side of the chin to mean "nutrition" as well. See: kzbin.info/door/Zy9xs6Tn9vWqN_5l0EEIZAsearch?query=nutrition Specifically: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5ewpqiPZ9GBb7s and kzbin.info/www/bejne/sJ-alpaAedtrprs For additional questions on specific signs in the videos you may wish to join the Lifeprint-ASLU Facebook group: In order to help people more quickly receive responses to requests for free help regarding basic sign language questions I have set up a website at Lifeprint.com where you can look up signs and visit lesson pages. I have also set up a Facebook group to provide assistance and feedback to individuals wishing to receive advice regarding ASL. If you haven't done so yet, you may wish to visit and apply to join: facebook.com/groups/Lifeprint.ASLU/ If you do wish to join, please keep in mind that you will need to "read the rules" and answer a couple of questions during the application process. After you are a member of the Lifeprint-ASLU group feel free to post your ASL-related questions there after doing a search for the answer using the in-group search function (available on full-size browsers). You should receive some good answers. After a reasonable amount of time if you haven't received an answer from the group and if you still need my assistance feel free to tag me from within the thread. If I'm signing "cafeteria" but am left-handed, do I do the mirror image like normal but then my "c" is backwards? Or do I switch and use my non-dominant (right) hand? Thank you!
@sign-language
@sign-language 4 жыл бұрын
Left-handed people generally do signs as a mirror image of right-handed people. As a separate topic: The movement in a number of signs can be reversed and the sign still mean the same. This doesn't apply to all signs but it applies to some. "Cafeteria" is one of the signs that can be reversed. For more information, see: www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-layout/metathesis.htm
