Dr. Vicars, thanks for posting these lessons. I've been using them as well as lifeprint.com . My goal is to be able to tend my customers' needs since I'm some sort of social worker. Thank you and tell that woman (Kate) she is one pretty lady. Again, thanks for the videos and it looks like you're one great teacher.

Hey Bill, I have been doing this class via your videos for a good long while now. I am a first responder and am trying to learn so I can be more effective at helping those who are deaf or hard of hearing more efficiently out in the field. I just want to thank you for all that you have done! You are a great man. I'm sure you get that a lot, but I just wanted to put that out there. I still have a long way to go, but these videos are awesome. The little conversations in between the lesson parts always have me giggling and smiling. Thank you for all that you have done and continue to do!

What was it you were talking about around 6:30?
@aslu
@aslu 9 жыл бұрын
Josh Wyss Josh, at around 6:30 on the Lesson 13 video I was explaining to Katelyn the concept of a CDI which stands for "Certified Deaf Interpreter." A CDI is a person who is Deaf and who is very skilled at understanding and expressing American Sign Language that is far away from English on the "sign language continuum." Sometimes a regular "Hearing" interpreter for the Deaf (a person who grew up Hearing and learned ASL as a second language) simply doesn't have the depth and breadth of experience in the Deaf World necessary to catch the nuances of "deep ASL" (used by some Deaf individuals) and thus could benefit from having the assistance of a CDI to "fill in the gaps."

"DEAF or HEARING you?" on the board, signed back and forth. She responded "hearing". Bill responded with "DEAF" followed by "HARD-OF-HEARING. I CAN HEAR SOME BUT DISLIKE, PREFER SIGN" and gives a sign that indicates he is proficient in sign (I guess I'd translate that into English as "I can sign faster than I can talk, I can just throw signs out there."). She didn't recognize that sign, asked him what it meant. Bill stopped his story mid-sign and started giving an explanation of the sign, contrasting it with a sign indicating... I guess an awkward or beginning signer, becoming more advanced. He tells her that she was previously a beginning signer, and has made progress in her signing abilities.

Stenography / stenographer. Do a search for: stenograph machine (or) stenography machine Then switch to the "images" tab and take a looks at what a stenograph machine looks like. These days you typically just see laptops with software (instead of actual stenograph machines) but the sign is still out there in use to refer to the process of "real time captioning."

@sign-language
@sign-language Жыл бұрын
The sign to which you are referring, (an "A" moved firmly and quickly to the palm of the upright / palm forward non-dominant hand) means "an 'A' grade" as in an academic grade of "A." I'm joking around with Katelyn (and the class) by stating that because she has publicly declared that she likes my class I'll give her a good grade. (She certainly earned an "A" through her own effort though!)

@@sign-language a line from the tv show itself. And not my female student. Edited to add that the line is from that exact scene. And please note in the title, "brotp". Very different power dynamic, and context. These are fictional character friends, doing the in-context equivalent of complimenting each other's clothing. Not an actual teacher with power, making sexual comments to a student.

(Even if it had been a male student, the unethical power differential you hold over people participating in your classes for grades, credit, etc is still there. As are potentially various laws and school policies to protect students from teachers putting them in that sort of situation.)
@sign-language
@sign-language 9 ай бұрын
You asked if you misunderstood. Yes, you are misunderstanding - the overall situation - if not the specific interaction. In your reply you mention “fiction” and “context.” Please do not ignore the fictional nature and the context of the process Katelyn and I are engaged in. Katelyn understood it and was not offended. She thought it was funny. I know this because we communicated off camera -- a lot! We had a strong, positive relationship and communicated often about anything and everything both in sign language and via emails. Literally two weeks after the above video was created Katelyn sent me the following email: ------------------------------- From: Katelyn ███ Sent: Mon, May 16 Subject: ASL 1 Thank you Dr. V! Seriously this was the funnest / inspiring class I have taken! Can't wait for next semester! ------------------------------------ Here's a passage from one of her other (many) emails -- this one close to a year later as she neared graduation: ----Original Message---- From: Katelyn ███ Sent: Tue, Mar 20 ... I feel so blessed to have had a teacher like you! It is people like you who make this world a greater place! I would love to come visit you before this semester ends! Let me know your office hours! ... ------------------------------------ So, I’m not going to apologize for joking around with Katelyn or any of my other students on camera as part of practice sessions full of frequent, often fictional, ongoing joking. I would flog myself if I ever (in her opinion - not yours) offended her. Again though, she wasn’t offended. She thought it was funny. Long afterward she continued to share very positive comments to me directly and seek out further opportunities to experience more of my humor and approach to instruction. At that time at the university had twelve ASL instructors from whom Katelyn could have signed up to take ASL 2. She chose to take my ASL 2 course the next semester. While my approach to humor was a good fit for Katelyn (or she wouldn't have later sought out opportunities to meet with me and spend time with me or signed up for my ASL 2 course when she had so many other options) and a good fit for the over 400,000 people who have subscribed to my channel - it is apparently not a good fit for you. I get that. The good news is there are lots and lots of other free online ASL resources out there.

Sure it is. It just isn't at a convenient angle. In the real world we Deaf often have to (and do) read fingerspelling from all kinds of angles. Consider what you see in the videos as helping you practice for the real world when a Deaf person may be standing to your side and signing to you (which happens a lot -- for example if the two of you are walking somewhere or sitting next to each other at a movie, etc.). For fun check out this example of fingerspelling: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5nRn32oqLqLmLc That will help you prepare for those times when you are sitting in the back seat of a car watching someone in the front seat spell something.

Imagine someone saying, "You need to make the weights in a gym as light as possible so that it helps the weightlifters to lift the weights." Sure -- if you want a bunch of people who can't lift anything heavy -- but if they are ever going to build serious muscles they are going to need to struggle a bit. Look, I "get it." I understand why you want to see the fingerespelling more clearly. It is called "comprehensible input." Students need comprehensible input structured in a way that allows them to grasp the material. Let me assure you that you don't need to keep commenting on this for the simple fact that what you are saying isn't "news" to me. You aren't telling me something I haven't thought of -- nor are you cluing me into something that somehow escaped my notice. I totally agree that it is easier for "online" students to comprehend fingerspelling if the fingerspelling faces the camera. At some point though students "do" need to learn how to read fingerspelling at an angle. If they don't learn it here they will wish they had -- when they start interacting with Deaf people. These early series videos were created "not" as online videos but as in-class videos which happened to later be placed online. My goal in these earlier lessons to be helpful to the "real world" students who were sitting in front of me at the time and had paid real world money to take the class. Later I decided to upload the videos and let folks watch them for free. Getting back to the discussion about fingerspelling and camera angle: It simply isn't important that you catch all of the fingerspelling. It is not. I review the vocabulary in the videos multiple times. I even show the English word for the vocabulary in the slides. There is no danger of a student "not" learning the lesson vocabulary and sentences. If needed a student can go to my website at lifeprint.com/asl101/lessons/lessons.htm and click on individual vocabulary links to make sure they get the vocabulary and are able to keep progressing.
