Hello ASL Heroes!!! If you’ve enjoyed these lessons or videos you are invited to help support ASL University. A donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for the ASL University website: Lifeprint.com. There's an easy way you can help out your humble (as well as kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher. Just click on the Paypal (donation) link below and you can be an "above and beyond" ASL Hero! www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=64QMBRBXQSV6G Thanks! - Dr. Bill ========================== p.s. Want to have your very own USB drive with four semesters worth of ASL instruction (that’s the equivalent of two years of colleges classes) for just $79.95? See "SuperUSB" in the ASLUniversity bookstore at: lifeprint.com/bookstore/bookstore.htm Take care and my best to you all. :)

One of my favorite parts of watching this video is seeing Katelyn's improvement over the course. That's so encouraging. :-)

You will indeed see "refrigerator" occasionally signed as "COLD-BOX." The people who seem to sign it that way the most are ASL instructors who are striving to avoid "initialization" of their signs as a way of distancing themselves from what they feel is "English-like" signing. "COLD-BOX" is certainly acceptable but in everyday usage we Deaf tend to gravitate toward "efficiency." A multi-movement compound sign is going to take more "work" to do and thus be less commonly used.

Due to my school schedule, I usually stop in the library to watch these awesome videos. I'm learning so much. I can't tell you how many times I've laughed out loud in this quiet library. You are so funny! I appreciate how you keep a sense of humor. Makes learning. Your student is such a sport. I enjoy laughing with her as well. These lessons are timeless.

Here you have a conflict between culture (an aspect of which is shown in the desire to sign in a way that is autonomous and separate from English -- by avoiding initialization) vs. the natural human tendency toward linguistic efficiency (wanting to sign COLD with an "R" so as to avoid making two extra movements to sign "BOX"). You should certainly sign it however your local ASL teacher wants it signed (at least for the duration of any class you may be taking) and however your local Deaf prefer.

8:25 sounds like an interesting time in the park for Katelyn and Bill. 12:59 bill seems to like his snow. 18:19 but on a serious note. for the sign WILL. Could that also mean a person will? like their "last will and testament" that kind of thing
@sign-language
@sign-language 2 жыл бұрын
Great question! Nope. The sign WILL (as in future) doesn't work for "will" as in a last will and testament. Just spell "will" in those situations.

I signed: SHORT-term FINE BUT CONTINUE CONTINUE COLD not-LIKE ME. Which is to say, in response to her question "Do you like cold weather?" -- I replied: "I'm fine with brief could weather but I don't like ongoing cold weather."

I'm sure you've found them already, but if you click on Bill Vicars (his youtube name) right below his video, it takes you to his channel. You'll find ASL 2 with 15 videos in it, and there you'll find 16-30.

That's okay. You don't have to understand everything for the curriculum to work. Just get the target vocabulary and move on to the next lesson. =========================== How to use ASL University to learn sign language for free: 1.
