This actually isnt a Guthrie song. Its a much older song first credited to... Cobb and Edwards I think. A copy was among Guthrie's papers and that's how this version came to be :)

When you put your heart and soul into something and it never returns any of your efforts, and you’re completely content with it, and feel like maybe just maybe, with just it’s presence then you can handle the day, the nights wouldn’t be so long. And the tears wouldn’t so openly flow. Though I can see now that’s a lie. The day cripples me, and the night is never ending, and the tears are still falling down my face. I thought maybe it would understand, it would sympathize if anything, stick around out of pity ? Maybe even responsibility, for leading me on and pretending to value me. Though In the end, here I am , 5 O clock in the morning, stuck in the night waiting for a call, a text message something ,a response to my cries. My eyes spewing tears. I’ll guess I’ll just have to adjust.

+islamofeminist Yes, Billy Bragg was in charge of the project. However, he did not sing lead vocal on all tracks. Jeff Tweedy also sang some tracks particularly on Vol 2 and 3. It is clearly Tweedy's voice on When the Roses Bloom again, not Bragg. There voices are very different. Take a look at the studio video where Tweedy is singing lead and Bragg is accompanying on guitar. Jeff Tweedy, Billy Bragg & Wilco, Corey Harris - When the Roses Bloom Again Incidentally, Woody Guthrie did not write When the Roses Bloom Again, although he did sing it. It was written by Will D. Cobb / Gus Edwards, 1901.
