The phrase that Trevelyan used about the Irish Famine being the work of “an all-wise and merciful providence” smacks so much of Thatcher and the Protestant thing that good works don’t matter, only faith, or, in her case, fanatical conviction. I can’t help also thinking, though, that the miners’ strike could not be similarly policed today, with all the camera phones.

This photo reminds me an interview with a great artist Jay Munly: "(...)Billy Bragg, he did something for me. What kind of effect did he have on you? That was when people went to concerts and stood in line. So we were out at the Rainbow Music Hall all day. And all of a sudden this gentleman comes riding up on a bicycle with powered speakers on his back and he starts playing songs. He's like, "Oh, I'm playing tonight," and no one believed him. I don't think his album had even come out in the States yet. I think his EP had come out, so no one knew who he was, but he was on stage a few hours later. I was young at that time. I don't know what I was -- eleven, twelve. I wasn't even a teenager. " :)

Hmm did some research and I will concede that the Jacobite version wasn't the original but i've found that both the song you refer to and a song called "my love is in germany" claims the tune (not the lyrics) was composed by some Holland Colonel around the same time. Though looking at the two articles the levellers one seems to have much better citations and evidence so I am happy to concede that point as well until further evidence can be found.
@gaconnochie
@gaconnochie 8 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure that you were wrong Wisdom Pen. As far as I know the original song was an anti-Jacobite song just not the version widely known in Scotland which is a later Robert Burns version - which though still blaming the Jacobites was more concillatory but the older song he based it on is vehemently anti-Jacobite and anti-Catholic with the lyrics "With the Pope you covenant, as they say, as they say, With the Pope you covenant, as they say, With the Pope you covenant, And Letters there you sent, Which made your Prince present to array." If anyone actually knows a version that predates the 1745 Rebellion then it'd be interesting to see the lyrics

Younger millennial friend of mine (I'm Gen X) said the other day "I'm sorry, I just don't see an alternative to capitalism" and I said "Neither did Maggie Thatcher, and I think she was wrong, too....along with Francis 'End of History' Fukuyama...."

Protest songs have existed as long as people have oppressed each other. I think Billy would be one of the first people to say what a huge influence Guthrie was on him but why is that a bad thing? Even if you don't like him, I think his message is an important one and he probably brought Guthrie's work to people who wouldn't have otherwise known of him. That's got to be a good thing.

Clement Atlee got over 50% of the vote, the conservative victories since 1955 have consistently had a lower % of the vote than the victory before them, socialism IS winning! Once we have buried Thatcher (R.I.P) we can bury Thatcherism! Long live Atlee and Bevan! Long live the International! Long live the working people!

The tailor is done for, The people said to the Bishop. It was the talk of the fair His wings were smashed And he was dashed On the hard, hard stones of the square. Toll the bells in the steeple, It was all a lie Man is no bird No one will ever fly, The Bishop said to the people. This small verse by Berthold Brecht puts it all in a nutshell. Quite something to ponder in this age of supersonic flight.

let us not forget the lessons of the past as Cameron is carrying on the work of Thatcher making all that should be ours by right only the privilege of the upper classes such as quality education and healthcare, the right to a quality retirement and state pension.
