After some time working on Engine 33, Jack arrives at the scene of another vacant rowhouse fire, where a fellow firefighter from Ladder 49, Dennis Gauquin (Billy Burke), dies after falling through a roof of the building. Jack decides, although it is more dangerous, to take his friend's position as a "truckie", a search and rescue member on Ladder 49 by transferring to the Truck.

For those that may not know we lost 3 Fire Fighters in Baltimore. I served with one of them directly and the others indirectly. The discussion came out about Vacant Buildings in Baltimore where this film was filmed. Baltimore is still asking the same questions in 2022. RIP to my 3 Fire Fighter brothers and Sisters that lost their lives servicing January 24th 2022.

This movie is loosley based on the Worcester cold storage fire of 1999 that killed 6 fire fighters . They were gonna make a film about that but got alot of backlash and it never got made. Woody Harrellson and Ed Harris were set to star. The warehouse in this film is very similar to the one from the very real Worcester fire , right down to they were only In the warehouse checking it because rumor of squatters possibly being in there. I could be explaining this alittle wrong as it's been awhile since I seen this and thought about the Worcester fire. RIP to the Worcester 6

The battalion chief that put that company on the roof should have been keelhauled. Abandoned houses and no SAR required? If that isn't a Surround and Drown then nothing is. NONE of them should have been on that roof. This was a nuclear f*ckup, and one of the few problems I had with this movie is that it was completely glossed over. Yeah, the point they were trying to make is that firefighters can and do suffer pointless deaths and injuries, and a moment of carelessness can kill you, because fires cut no slack. But still... the carelessness wasn't on the part of the company on the roof. It was their chief that f*cked up.

My question is why the hell did he stand there as it collapsed he probably coulda jumped away and survived. And yes I know it was an unstable roof but it could gone from a 90% chance of death to a 50/50% chance of dying or surviving.
@Tank50us
@Tank50us Жыл бұрын
It's basically the same thing as why a deer will stare into headlights. Firefighters do train to recognize these signs, but after years of experience, they never see them. Finally, the one time you experience it... you know what it means... but in the seconds it takes your brain to process it, you fall through, and you're dead in seconds. This is ultimately why when on the roof, fire fighters pound the roof with their tools, so that the moment they find that spongy spot, they know they can't stand there, or that they should evacuate the roof. This scene is also why when I was a volunteer, and one of the officers of my department (Reliance Hook and Ladder), said "Get off the roof" I didn't question it, I just went. That was an abandoned school, and only a single story... but it went from a simple cut and find to a surround and drown in about 20 seconds. Fortunately, the only casualty from that event was the Sawsall we had up there... that was recovered intact a few days later and returned to us... somehow in working condition (we just turned it into a training aid)

The most unrealistic part of this is that when the Firefighter fell through through the roof, that as soon as the MAYDAY / RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) response was triggered, every member on scene that was able would have immediately begun an interior attack and rescue attempt and would not have stopped until the downed Firefighter was retrieved. Members do not stop and say "Forget it, He's gone." If the building collapses, they attack the pile. They never quit until either a Firefighter is recovered, dead, alive or injured IE: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gZrZgox6gNqNfsU
@Tank50us
@Tank50us Жыл бұрын
The problem is that there was no RIT on scene, and the "Forget it he's gone" moment was more about minimizing risk because there was no way they could get to him, not with a fire shooting out the door like that. After all, you already lost one man, are you going to risk losing more to get to someone who's already dead for all you know? RIT are trained specifically for that very scenario, but if you have none available, you'd be forced to rely on your own guys, and that would probably be JTs line of thinking when he told the one guy to get the door... but the second they were met with Micheal Bay flames (these have happened IRL, as I'm sure you know), he knew there was no hope, ordered an evac, and pulled his people back. It is the one part of being a fire chief that has to suck the most... knowing that you might have to make a decision that effectively ends one life, in order to save more lives.

I believe this scene is supposed to be set in a time when that wasn't the SOP. It's meant to follow Jacks career, and I think it was supposed to start in about the early 90s or very late 80s when he was a rookie, and this scene is about early 90s (since his wife is pregnant by this point). There's a deleted scene that deals with 9-11, and that is supposed to be just before his big heroic moment towards the end of the film, then fast forward to the next spring or summer, and he meets his end.
