I worked evening shift from the late '60s onward - I started at the post office when I was younger, but I went to nursing school and one of the reasons was so that I could have a career that involved evening shift so I could come home and watch Carson. In those days there was the 11 o'clock news and then Carson would start at 11:30 PM. And this was way way before VCRs. If you missed it, it didn't come around again - and every show was a jewel. If you weren't around then, you just don't know how good that show was. And because there were only three or four channels in those days, everybody watched the same shows and that's what you talked about at work the next day. Billy's story really brought it all back, didn't it. And what a great impersonation of Howard Cosell!

Stephen is over the top enjoying this to the core of his molecular being. The bit on Cosell going on a poetic rant is so freakcing real for those like myself who had the chance to hear Cosell with his best bits of extraordinary descriptions of sports moments, and hearing this through the storytelling master Billy Crystal... oh boy, it does not get any better for Stephen. He is just happy to be there and listen.

3:08 Billy had a bit on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson where he told a story about an African safari and every time he’d say “and he stepped out into the tall dry grass” he’d make the sound of footsteps by crunching a bowl full of potato chips with his hands. It was so silly, but so well timed that he had us rolling off the couch laughing 🤣

Crystal is aging like fine wine. I can remember listening to some of his stand-up stuff from the early 90s, where he was talking about some of the challenges of aging... Here he is, 30+ years later, and aside from the grey in his hair, he's got the same energy and enthusiasm that he had in the 80s and 90s. One of the classics of American entertainment.

I remembered when: he did Comic Relief, with Whoopi Goldberg ("The View") and the late Robin Williams), hosted the Oscars (with a song and dance montage of the nominated films), being a cast member on SNL in the 1980's (with Joe Piscopo & Eddie Murphy); Crystal had a bit part in the film, with Carol Kane (the 1970's "Taxi" tv sitcom), in "The Princess Bride;" he did great impressions: Howard Cosell (who was pals with Muhammad Ali) & Sammy Davis Jr. Johnny Carson at "The Tonight Show": it was a comics dream to make on the show; Carson let you talk to him on the chair (next to Ed McMahon; close by Doc Severinsen's big band orchestra); the next day, the comic would get famous, due to the press coverage, either like "Deadline," "Variety" or the "Hollywood Reporter" newspapers. Like Carson, David Letterman, Tom Snyder, Joan Rivers, Arsenio Hall, Conan O' Brien, and Craig Ferguson, are late-night talk show legends.

I was a college kid working a summer job at a high rise on the upper east side as a night doorman. One of my jobs was to deliver The NY Times to those residents who had a subscription. I went to place one on the door mat outside a unit, and the door opened up. All I saw at first was slippers and a bathrobe, followed by " Good morning young man" in that amazing voice. It was Cosell the man and I was star struck .
