In this lesson you’ll learn how to say “before” and “after,” and you’ll learn how to use these words both with nouns and with verbs that have been changed into nouns. You’ll also learn another common way to say “after,” using a form that we previously learned.

I recently learn 전에 and 후에 from another source and I was very confused. I don't know why these two concepts are so confusing to me but I'll keep practicing! I was grateful to see this video today 'cause I like the way you explain things and I wanted to thank you for including some exercises here I think they helped me a lot to understand them better.

전(에) and 후(에) are consider as nouns, adverbs or prepositions? I found "nouns" in the dictionary but in english it's more an adverb/preposition

Thank you for the lesson! This is off topic, but something I find fun to do is say sentences in English as if it used Korean syntaxes. Like I would say "exercise before banana and orange ate." Or "that before meeting could?" I just thought it was funny.... 감사합니다 선생님 ^_^

More information if you got this great video enough: You can use also 뒤 instead of 후. However, we don't use 앞 instead of 전. - 점심을 먹기 전에 영화를 봤어요. (I watched a movie before having lunch.) - *점심을 먹기 앞에 영화를 봤어요. -- Ungrammatical - 점심을 먹은 후에 영화를 봤어요. (I watched a movie after having lunch.) - 점심을 먹은 뒤에 영화를 봤어요. (Id.) If you want to use 앞, then you have to use "-기에 앞서". - 점심을 먹기에 앞서 영화를 봤어요. (I watched a movie before having lunch.)

For 후, the noun you attach 후에 to cannot be a normalized verb correct? That’s why you say do Action Verb Stem + (은/ㄴ) 후에 instead right? And the fact that 전 can use normalized verbs while 후 can’t is one key difference between them right?

Now I understand the literal meaning of "전" and "후" used in "오전" and "오후" when telling time. 3:20 Is the sentence "도착한 후에 전화 주세요" not supposed have "해" between "전화" and "주세요"? Similar to an earlier example 1:02 "친구를 만나기 전에 설거지를 해 주세요"
@GoBillyKorean
@GoBillyKorean 3 жыл бұрын
You can use both! 전화(를) 주세요 is like "Give (me) a call" vs 전화해 주세요 ("Please call me.").

Hi Billy, I have a question: what is the literal meaning of 전 and 후? (I assume that knowing that will help me understand why 후 requires the 에 particle and 전 not)
@GoBillyKorean

Hello! I have a question should i watch kdramas for learning korean? But i don't understand korean that well and i haven't learned all of the grammar.
@GoBillyKorean
@GoBillyKorean 3 жыл бұрын
No, K-dramas will be much too high level for learning Korean for most people. Variety shows would be more useful for listening practice, because they use more natural Korean like you'd hear in a real conversation. But watching shows to learn Korean isn't possible because it's only input - you need lots of output (speaking practice) to actually be able to get good at speaking yourself.

Hi Billy! I know from an earlier lesson you said when you conjugate 듣다 the ㄷ becomes ㄹ like 들어요. However, at 2:58, step 1 said to get the "stem" of an Action Verb before attaching (ㄴ or 은) 후에. So I'm wondering why the example " 수업을 들은 후에 공부를 할 거예요" is not using the verb stem "듣은"?
@GoBillyKorean
@GoBillyKorean 2 жыл бұрын
The reason is that the "ㄷ" rule does not always apply, as I mention when explaining that rule. It does in many cases, but not in all cases. 듣다 is a verb where it does change when conjugating (들어요, 들은, for example). You can simply memorize it as an exception :)

Hi Billy, I noticed that in the 4th example at 3:40, 시작한 is used but I'd expect 시작했은 to be used instead. Does this mean you can't use past tense verb stems for this form?
@GoBillyKorean
@GoBillyKorean Жыл бұрын
시작한 would be the correct form with 후에, as it's explained at the start of the lesson (the stem of 하다 is 하). 했은 is not a conjugation.

After KMS 3, if you've learned all of the material in it (not just skimmed it) you could start with a college level textbook series. But I don't have any specific recommendation for which books are best - that will be up to you.

다음 means "next," so it implies you're doing something "next" after doing something - but when used in this same form (as I teach at the end of the lesson in the notes) you can use either one :-)
