I remember when Mony Mony first came out, it was a huge hit so MLB & other sporting arenas would play it during intermission to get the fans pumped. So, as kids, we started chanting "get laid, get F'd" while singing the song. Billy loved it & started singing it too!

In mid 80's I was at a dance hall (Ontario) that was really tame for first hour until the DJ dropped the needle on this song. Seconds later a gal who I thought was the hottiest but thought she had zero interest or never noticed me... ran over and grabbed my hand. I didn't hesitate when she quickly lead me to the dance floor. We were dancing to Mony mony like pros and then I saw her raise a clenched fist, as if in a dream I realized what part of the song was coming up and raised my hand too then we yelled those lyrics GLGF! I was shocked that everyone in the entire building appeared to be dancing and had sung/shouted those lyrics. Then suddenly the building plunged into darkness as it lost all power, stopping the music. Soon the ancient dance hall owner was on stage giving some blah blah about religion, morals, profanity, blah-blah etc. Then he warned us something like "Don't do That again or I'll shut down the hall for the night, And send you All Home!" Moments later the power returned and the music started where it left off. My dance partner and I instantly locked eyes, she had such wonderfully mischievous hazel eyes, we immediately picked up dancing where we had left off and danced like there was no tomorrow. A minute or so later just before the next chorus of explicit lyrics we raised our hands in unison, a few seconds later the entire room rooaarred GLGF! They killed the power to dance hall and kicked everyone out. Within half a year that hall was closed permanently. Learned songs do have power. And some memories can be priceless.

"Mony Mony" is one of those songs that had TWO equally fantastic performances. I wonder if Tommy James and Billy Idol ever met each other!

I was a teen in the 80s and every school dance or roller rink went crazy when this song came on and everybody would hit the floor and chant the forbidden lyrics "HMFGLGF" the part that really makes me curious is how did everyone everywhere know those words? Internet didn't exist and no way would you hear that on radio or TV video channels in the late 80s or early 90s?

I was lucky enough to see Tommy James promote the single at our record store down the street in LA when I was in high school in ‘68. Also saw Billy Do it Irvine Meadows in the 80’s. You’re right, Billy’s version is better. Definitely sexier!
