Got a call from an old friend We used to be real close Said he couldn't go on the American way Closed the shop, sold the house Bought a ticket to the West Coast Now he gives them a stand-up routine in L.A. I don't need you to worry for me cause I'm alright I don't want you to tell me it's time to come home I don't care what you say anymore, this is my life Go ahead with your own life and leave me alone I never said you had to offer me a second chance I never said I was a victim of circumstance I still belong, don't get me wrong And you can speak your mind But not on my time They will tell you you can't sleep alone In a strange place Then they'll tell you you can't sleep With somebody else Ah, but sooner or later you sleep In your own space Either way it's okay You wake up with yourself I don't need you to worry for me cause I'm alright I don't want you to tell me it's time to come home I don't care what you say anymore, this is my life Go ahead with your own life and leave me alone I never said you had to offer me a second chance I never said I was a victim of circumstance I still belong, don't get me wrong And you can speak your mind But not on my time I don't care what you say anymore, this is my life Go ahead with your own life and leave me alone

I am 38, and I've loved music all my life. For some reason I am discovering Billy Joel now. It is the same wonderful and special feeling as when I discovered the Beatles, The Police, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Elton John, Stevie Wonder... Each new song I find is a gem of music, feellings and styles. It's a wonderful experience that doesn't happen many times in life and I didn't expect it to have at this age. Thank you Billy Joel.

I first knew of this from the Tom Hanks show Bosom Buddies. And even when it first came out, apparently it was a smash hit in the Philippines because the same year in the Philippines this Filipino movie was playing it in the background. I thought that’s pretty cool that this music was that so well received.

My mom was kind of strict. More of a sensitive soul but getting her pissed off wasn’t a great idea. My dad was the strict one. He had a tone that would make the hairs on the back of the neck stand up. He was pretty good with a boot in the ass or a belt on the ass but that was for rare occasions. Could tell he was from German ancestry, very much his way or no way.

I'm 47 and finally cutting off my toxic mother after almost 50 years of abuse. It's taken this long to even work out how abusive she is and what she's done to my head. There's actually nothing wrong with my head but my body is so full of tension (and a bit wrecked from drugs & alcohol, trying to cope). It's her who needs a team of psychiatrists. Covert emotional abuse can be worse than obvious abuse and go on for a lot longer. I hope this helps someone ❣️

I also cut off my toxic mother when I hit 43, I decided that I could no longer tip toe around her constant criticism and demeaning me in front of others because she is a mother. Her ego is such that she admits no wrong and expects her children to acquiesce to her always. I had fucking had it and have not spoken with her for over a decade. Do I miss her, not at all. Do I love her, not sure. However, I refused to live the remaining possible half of my life unhappy. All the best.

I've heard this song for decades but never really stopped to appreciate it until tonight. It seems to always be playing in the background at a doctor's office or someplace like Sears. It's a great song. Especially now taking the time to understand what he's actually singing about, the sharp chords, the funk/disco bass octaves... I'm particularly fond of the backup vocals "I never said...". As always, his Jersey accent adds a great dimension (same with Donald Fagen). It's a certified toe-tapper. My life by Billy Joel made it to number 1 on 11/16/1978 in the nation and I was on my way to duty in the Philippines in the Navy at the Ship Repair Facility Subic Bay, the very best tour of duty I ever had when I was in the Navy. A few months later my late wife & I got married on April 5, 1979 and we stayed married up to March 6, 2010 when she passed away a month shy of being married 31 years. It was my theme song for years. My life by Billy Joel is my favorite Billy Joel song, my other favorite Billy Joel song is She's always a woman to me which was played a lot on radio stations in the Philippines in April & May of 1979.

This song is awsome. The lyrics is so contemporary and the piano is just a ton of fun. Everytime I hear this song after a long time I go on a binge and spend a week listening. This week a dude at work was humming it and it stuck in my head. This was wednesday. Today is sunday and I've listened to it more times than I remember. It's always like this.
@Bikewithlove9 ай бұрын
Lately those high piano key notes at the end of the song were coming up in my memory so here I am. Even though I never bought an album of his, I grew up with Billy Joel on morning radio in Philadelphia. Billy’s music was a huge part of my world growing up, and songs like this one and Allentown defined the mood of everything in my environment. The 90s was a total departure, and his presence waned, but he’s always going to be there. Captain Jack was another one that hit me at work the other day. I’ve got to tell you these are definitely young, restless songs about youth and the aversion to sacrifice without meaning, but I work a tough job now and I promise you it’s nothing like Billy’s songs if you’ve found your center and your life has yielded you some things. It doesn’t have to be a ‘dead end.’ That said, Billy’s songs serve more to me now, not as a cynical disdain for labor, but as a warning not to succumb to your narcissism - they’re more like examples of what happens when you lose the plot for a self-centered lack of imagination, which I’m happy to say is not caused by hard work and sacrifice, as long as you know what you’re serving.

Fun fact: the comedian he talks about in the first verse is actually Richard Lewis, a famous stand-up comedian, and the actor who played Prince John in Robin Hood: Men in Tights. He's also a semi-regular on Curb Your Enthusiasm. EDIT: This was an unsubstantiated rumour. Turns out it was actually Tony Lawrence, a friend of Billy's who, like Lewis, moved to LA to become a comedian.
