This is the 70’s. I had the great honor to grow up with this music. You have a great interpretation of these lyrics. Billy Joel is an American treasure. A supremely talented poet/songwriter/storyteller/lyricist/composer. Something happened and the song was cut off before the end. That’s unfortunate. Billy Joel has a deep and rich catalogue for you to explore. 🌺✌️

I'm sure you heard it - it is one of the most popular songs of all time. Billy Joel had an incredible run of hits in the 70s and 80s. He is the fourth-best-selling solo artist in the United States, with over 160 million records sold worldwide. He had over 30 top 40 hits - and when this song came out in 1973 you couldn't avoid it if you tried.

@@RussianReactionReviewsIrina, i don't know how to do it but some music reactors put an opaque filter over the video that says "video blocked for copyright" and pause a couple times to get by being blocked. I got attacked by several "fans" (of rap) for mentioning that a song clip in a video was a very good song, and they instantly had to defend that the singer (Dido) had only added the clip (which was a sample taken from one of her major hits by Eminem). At least 6 people were ready to (unalive) me for suggesting that their hero had not written the part of the song in the video. Rap and Hip Hop people tend to steal (uh, sample?) famous hooks from very successful songs, and their their rabid halfwit fans then assume they have done some unknown person a favour letting them perform a bit of the song (the only good part). It is HIS song, No one even knew who she was.. Music today has suffered horribly. Music fans today have virtually no clue of the world that happened last week let alone 50 years ago. Fans of one genre can't imagine someone may record something in another genre. If not for all the social media and posting sites available music would be dead. Fortunately there are many completely unknown, talented musicians that can let their music out to find an audience. Sadly, we do have to dig through loads and loads of crap to find any of it.

Congratulations Young Lady, You've stumbled into the music of the 80s, the best time for music and those to lived in it, me included. Piano man is a Nostalgic song that talks about the different dreams that people had and never got realized. Consequently everyone has to live the best they can with whatever they have. Most of the people that lived in the 80s is still stuck with the music until the day We die, it's the best music while living on the best years of our lives. I hope this can help You understand better the song. Please be advised, You can get "addicted" to the 80s music easily. There was little cursing, degrading songs and always with a message, maybe about love, heartbreak, hope or so many different emotions that the human beings feel at a specific times in their respective lives. I'm glad that You like the song. Take care.

You mentioned the 80s three times, but this song was released in the _70s._ *Early* 70s, in fact -- 1973. I also like a lot of 80s music, but pretty much everything you said about that period also applies to the 70s, for those of us who grew up then, or any other period. I think it's all about what a person grew up with. I also love The Beatles, my favorite band from the 60s -- or _ever._

@@MikeAnn193; Sir, the song may have been out in 1973 but it got more popular in the 80s after MTV began playing music videos between 1981- 1982. The same happened with other songs and groups like Hotel California from The Eagles and other groups. I assume that as I love saying 80s a lot You may enjoy mentioning 60s and 70s but it's OK. I hope that You enjoyed the best years of Your lives because We're getting older in a hurry.🤭🤭. Take care Sir!.

Your right Irina about a bar song. Billy Joel got his start playing as a "piano man" in bars where he grew up to help support his mom and sister. He missed his final school exam and didn't get to graduate from high school and start a career in music. 25 years after high school he was able to submit essays to his former high school and was allowed to graduate.

Billy Joel is one of the most popular solo singers in USA (the 4th best seller at all) and has sold more than 150 milions records in his career. He's been influenced from many kinds of musics: rock'n'roll, rhythm & blues, jazz, german popular music (his father was a German-jew pianist), jewish music, disco music, irish music (he has born in New York, where there lives a very big Irish community).

This used to be such a popular scene, what we used to call a Piano Bar. Not only would the "piano man" play and sing, but patrons were welcome to sing as well, be it a pop song or from a musical or whatever. It was common to have a regular crowd and many great friendships came out of this atmosphere. I think Karaoke more or less killed the old Piano Bar dynamic.

I was wondering why there were 161 comments; now I know! People should read the comments first so the same one doesn't keep getting made repeatedly. I was actually shocked when I saw that this song came out in 1973. I didn't realize that it was THAT old. To answer your question, according to Wikipedia this song is classified as soft rock or folk rock. More than 5M copies of it were sold in the U.S. alone. In 2013, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In 2015, the Library of Congress selected "Piano Man" for preservation in the National Recording Registry for its "cultural, historic, or artistic significance." So yes, it's a classic. Great to see you doing a music reaction again! I have missed them.

I have read many comments on various KZbin channels that say things that are false, because they didn't take the time to do some research before embarrassing themselves. I could have left the comment without mentioning the source of the information, as if I just knew it. I don't do that. Besides, everything that we know comes from reading or hearing it somewhere. If I leave a comment without saying something to back it up, I get replies asking what my source is. Anyone can say anything they want to, but if there is no source given, it is meaningless.

@@genehornung3295 I make a habit of telling trolls that want you to "provide your source" to "do something anatomically challenging with themselves" as this is more conversational than PhD level investigation, so don't worry if someone challenges your information. You started by being "annoyed" (not going to guess your psych state) that there were so many comments and most of them were "not properly researched & peer reviewed and did not contain the suitable video evidence and sufficient notarized statements from direct witnesses." Then, instead of saying what you thought, you (potentially) had Chat AI sum up the basic description contained in Wiki. Watch the video, be pleased by the lovely host, maybe even enjoy the content. Then, come to the comments if you feel so moved, maybe even read some of the other comments, and if you have anything informational, or better yet, funny, or thought provoking, then add that to the conversation. To complain there are too many comments and the commenters didn't research properly, and then write (copy/paste?) from wiki really doesn't add much, especially since we are all mostly on devices that can instantly access millions of bits of information collected from over 50 years. I happen to have owned this on Album and 45, and have listened to it since the week it was released, and seen him perform it in many TV and video sources, plus have seen many interviews he has done to talk about this recording, and also other related issues. I have not quoted any sources, nor posted any supporting links because of (f*ck that nonsense) but I hope my decades of direct personal experience with Billy Joel music and performance, and years of watching YT videos, and 1000s of comments posted and millions read will suffice. I could email a resume and several testimonials from YT channels I have frequented, but again (f*ck that nonsense). If there is anything else that you would need to know, or if you have any questions, please feel free to send back more comments. And, my friend, as always, have a wonderful day.

Billy Joel is, in my opinion, the greatest songwriter in recent times. You noticed the lyrics told a story of the people who would come to the bar where he played. All Joel's songs have meaningful lyrics, but the outstanding thing about Joel is that he's a virtuoso piano player. All his songs are different. I hope you didn't listen to too many on your own because it would be nice to have more reactions to his songs here. Up until about 20 years ago there were still "smoking" and "non-smoking" sections in restaurants, but bars were generally just allowing people to smoke. Thankfully, that changed and smoking inside buildings became illegal. It was disgusting anyway, so they did everyone a favor...on top of the kids of my age getting to be adults and being the first generation to largely tell cigarette companies to go screw. As for what the cigarettes were made of...oh god NO, they were not more natural back then! They hadn't been just tobacco in decades, if not close to a century by the late-70's and early-80's when this came out. They have had all types of chemicals and crap in them for so long. So glad most people have gotten away from them here. I wish it was like that in other parts of the world.

When you stopped the song, you accidentally skipped to the end. There was more. The song is kind of a bluesy-waltz. Also, tobacco smoking is banned now in many places, but there are some places that it is still legal. In 2004, I moved from California to Colorado and was surprised to find that the local restaurants still had smoking sections, but now, 20 years later, unless they disclose that smoking is allowed, I would assume that any restaurant is non-smoking unless I saw a sign stating that it is smoking approved in certain rooms only.

This was his break-out hit that started his journey to stardom. The story is about the people he met working The Executive Club in LA. My name's not Davy, but I stayed in the Navy for life. I don't regret it because it's the best thing I ever did. The other video takes a little of my imagination. Example: A sailor in uniform doesn't need to point it out. "Yes, they're sharing a drink they call loneliness, but it's better than drinking alone."

The problem with music today is that you don't have actual musicians anymore. It is all digitally produced backing tracks and its very plain. Nobody ever changes it up in a song like this. This song is in 3/4. Like a waltz. Nobody does anything like that these days. Love your reaction. 🙂

Billy Strings, Sierra Ferrell, Sarah Jarosz, Molly Tuttle, and a host of others laugh at the idea that we don’t have actual musicians anymore. I'm a 48 year old who for most of my life listened primarily to music made before I was born, but in the past 5-10 that's changed; there so much great music being made now.

SInger/songwriters from the 70-80's all tell a story, not like today's music. (I think you cut off the end of the song, one more verse and the big ending. But great selection, keep going!)

You cut out the best part. He sings about each character and what their real dreams are, but then it all culminates to the line, "they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar and say, Man, what are you doing here?" The piano player is one of them. He is great, yet he's stuck there too. His dreams of being a great and famous piano player are stagnant as he is merely biding time as a meager bar pianist.

The genre is definitely rock & roll, but it's an older style along with stuff like The Beatles, Elton John, Bob Dylan, Bob Seger, etc. The thing about modern music is that recording technology has advanced so much that anyone can record a full album on a cheap laptop in their bedroom if they want. I'm sure there are dozens or hundreds of people making music just like this, but it gets buried by so much independent music coming out & it just goes undiscovered for the most part. I'd bet there are millions of artists on Bandcamp alone.

Why didn't you let it play till the end? But I think you played all the lyrics, at least. I love your sensitivity, honey. I've noticed it in previous videos, too. It just seems you have true emotional reactions to things, such as the sad stories in this song, as well as the sweet and funny elements. I think it's very touching. 😘
