He is not human. He's got a whole bunch of songs that are pieces of art. I don't know who Brenda and Eddie are, but he got me invested in their lives when I was like 12. 😆

This song is from "The Stranger" album from 1977. I remember buying this record. Every song on it is great. Billy is such a good singer songwriter & story teller as you can see with these descriptive lyrics. It is like a 3 part story fused into one (piano ballad intro - jazz middle - rock ending).

A big thank you to Jami for putting this treasure in Harri's ear. Personally, I consider this song to be Billy Joel's truest masterpiece... which is saying a lot because he has so many other absolute gems. Piano Man may be his signature song, But Scenes is his crowning achievement.

Yes he pieced parts of songs together , the middle being the Ballad of Brenda and Eddie. Billy has said he learned this from the Beatles Abbey Road side two. He consistently names this song as one of his very best and it has held up quite well. Some of his best work weren’t top 40 singles. Try “Until the Night” from 52nd Street album. Very Righteous Brothers vibe

Exactly ym! He had snippets of songs and was inspired by the Abbey Road medley and decided he could do that too!! I also second your recommendation of "Until The Night" and would add "An Innocent Man", a tribute to The Drifters as well!!

What's crazy about Billy & what separates him from everyone else is that he was able to make the different parts make sense with each other lyrically. The Abbey road medley is one of my favorite songs ever written but none of the parts make sense lyrically or follow a theme aside from "His sister Pam works in the shop" to tie into "Polythene Pam" a little bit. The way Billy transitions to the different parts musically is seamless & masterful! Again I love the Abbey Road medley & it's one of my favorite songs ever written but the songs are connected with minimal musical transitions. Almost cut & paste. Billy really the best modern songwriter to ever step foot on this Earth. I've said this in so many videos but I can't help it cause he really is. Love seeing people recognize the unearthly talent this man has.....

One of the smartest comments I've heard from a reactor...a song and a half...four songs in one. Exactly. I can't call this a "song." It's a composition, a "piece," or an opus of some sort. All tied together, like a classical piece of music, with the end of the song recapitulation the exposition at the beginning. so not only does Joel create this mashup of multiple sections, but the whole thing tells the life story of a couple.

Scenes shows that Joel's roots in classical music are not fabricated or exaggerated. It feels like a classical compositions with three movements: bottle of red, then Brenda and Eddie, then bookend it with reprise of bottle of red.

I love that it tells the story of two old friends getting together and remembering older times. That they have a possible romantic history is given away with the line "I'll meet you any time you want at OUR Italian restaurant." The next section is about what they're up to now with lines like, "got a new life, got a new wife," and you lost weight, I did not know..." As we progress deeper into 'Brenda & Eddie' we begin to realize that they might be talking about their own relationship and not just some Highschool friends. And we're finally back at the cafe just enjoying each other's company over a nostalgic meal.

Can I make you jealous? I was 16 in 1973 when his first album, Piano Man, was released. So for 50 years since then, I’ve waited in anticipation of every new album…listening to them hundreds of times…and SEEING dozens of his concerts. After Piano Man, and then Streetlife Serenade, he was popular…but not THAT popular. I went to several of his concerts in very small venues. To me, the greatest all-in-one artist of my generation.

Great song! Billy's lyrics are so easy to relate to. The thing about Billy and Paul McCartney is that they wrote what they knew about. Paul's very British and Billy is very American and they are writing about very relatable subjects to all of us. Both are great story tellers too. Harri thanks for this post. The title track to this album, "The Stranger," is one of my favorites. This entire album is great. Since I grew up on Long Island, where Billy also grew up, although a few years after he did, this song always brings me right back to high school there. I can just envision Brenda (if you listen closely you can hear him pronounce it more like "Brender," before a vowel, which is very Long Island) and Eddie, and all the kids who got married soon after high school. "Bohemian Rhapsody" was released two years before this song, so it -- and Lennon-McCartney's "Day in the Life," back in '67 -- were probably both influential. Billy has been called the American McCartney, and that works for me.

Billy Joel is definitely one of greats. You need to see a live performance when he's pounding the piano and playing the harmonica and singing, like he does for the song The Piano Man. Also, I don't think he sounds like Paul McCartney at all, but that might be because I've been listening to him since the 70's!

According to song facts This song is about people who peaked too early: the popular jocks in class who went nowhere in life. Like most of Joel's songs, he composed the music first, which in this case was inspired by The Beatles, specifically the suite of songs on their Abbey Road album where a few unfinished tunes were put together to create one coherent piece. On an A&E special, Joel said he came up with the "Bottle of white bottle of red" line while he was dining at a restaurant and a waiter actually came up to him and said, "Bottle of white... bottle of red... perhaps a bottle of rosé instead?" The "Things are okay with me these days..." part was an old piece of music he had written a long time before The Stranger album - he just changed the words around to update them. The third part of the song is an old song he had written called "The Ballad of Brenda and Eddie." Many towns on Joel's stomping grounds of Long Island have a spot or field surrounded by trees called "The village green," similar to the one he sings about here. Joel was in a gang (not a very rough one) in Levittown, Long Island called "The Parkway Green Gang." The restaurant which inspired this song, since closed, was the Fontana di Trevi at 151 West 57th Street in New York City, right across from Carnegie Hall. Joel recalled in USA Today July 9, 2008: "It was for the opera crowd, but the Italian food was really good. They didn't really know who I was, which was fine with me, but sometimes you would have a hard time getting a table. Well, I went there when the tickets had gone on sale for (my dates at) Carnegie Hall, and the owner looks at me and he goes (in an Italian accent), 'Heyyy, youra that guy!' And from then on, I was always able to get a good spot." Joel outlined to USA Today how the Beatles inspired this song: "I had always admired the B-side of Abbey Road, which was essentially a bunch of songs strung together by (producer) George Martin. What happened was The Beatles didn't have completely finished songs or wholly fleshed-out ideas, and George said, 'What have you got?' John said, 'Well I got this,' and Paul said, 'I got that.' They all sat around and went, 'Hmm, we can put this together and that'll fit in there.' And that's pretty much what I did."

An idea suddenly hit me listening to this after all these years: Maybe Brenda and Eddie are the two people reminiscing at the restaurant, thinking back and laughing about their short-lived marriage during their foolish teenaged youth. After all, "they parted the closest of friends"...

Well here is how I always understood it. But songs are subjective at best. So just my two cents. Billy is bumping into an old high school sweetheart they've exchanged numbers and the song starts out on the phone making a plan to meet for a date (Get a table near the street in our old familiar place, you and I face to face.) and they spend the evening reminiscing about when they grew up and Brenda and Ediie were the "IT" couple and how they all wanted to be just like them and then about how life comes along and changes all of that and they see them as just an average couple. The whole song is them catching up and talking about old times. Somewhere in the storyline Billy and this old flame rekindle the old magic and he tells her anytime you want to do this again "I'll meet you anytime you want in our (favorite old) Italian Restaurant."

This is one of the best songs ever to put on the car stereo. The "steering wheel bongos" take a real pounding during the Brenda and Eddie portion! 😊

Scenes is probably my favorite Billy Joel song, but there are so many more great ones: "New York State of Mind" (Totally different from Alicia Keys' song), "Miami 2017", "Angry Young Man", and "The Ballad of Billy the Kid". Deep cuts "Stiletto" and "All For Leyna" are amazing, too!

I'm glad you mentioned stiletto. Stiletto is a freaking great tune. I really love some of his cheesy 80s stuff off of glass houses too like "sleeping with the television on" and "I don't wanna be alone anymore"

"Scenes", "Miami 2017", "goodnight Saigon", "Downeaster Alexa", "and so it goes", "lullabye". In no particular order because you really can't pick the best song with Joel. You really cannot.

This was such a huge production song for the times with lots of instruments contributing. Aside from the obvious piano, guitar, bass and drums, listen for an accordion (or concertina) a tuba, sax and dueling clarinets! As a guitar player, Billy Joel was one of my favorite musicians to listen to for lyric writing and song arrangement, an absolute genius.

A song about two old friends reuniting over pasta and wine to tell stories about their youth. Great choice.

The lyrics to The Entertainer is awesome. It explains his experience in the music industry and if you know how he got screwed of millions in his hey day it makes it better.

Ooooh! My favorite Billy Joel song! Thank you for reacting! I think Bohemian Rhapsody is a good comparison, inasmuch as they both have different segments at different tempos, each with its own feel or "groove".
