The performance here is from 1982 when Billy was promoting his The Nylon Curtain album. He had recently recovered from a motorcycle accident at the time after a car had run into him, resulting in a broken wrist on one hand and broken thumb on the other, where he had to have the bone removed from the tip and needed it taped up to support it, which is why he was shaking out his hand at times. Richie Cannata played saxophone on the studio recording of this song, but he had left Billy's band by the time of this concert and was replaced by Mark Rivera who was the newbie band member here, but is now the only one from this performance who is still in Billy's band.

This show was from 1982. A few months before he had a horrific motorcycle accident that crushed his thumb on his left hand and destroyed his wrist on his right. That’s why his hand was cramping up. The sax player in the video is Mark Rivera (Richie played on the album and left the band in 81). 40 years later and Mark is still his sax player. Saw them in January. Great as ever. This is the best music reaction I have seen on KZbin! I was actually reliving my feelings when I saw and heard this live version for the first time. Billy Joel is a remarkable singer songwriter, performer, entertainer, musician. You can’t go wrong with any of his songs. This is probably his masterpiece song from his catalog. Great reaction! A few notes... you mentioned Billy shaking his hands... He actually had a really bad motorcycle accident earlier in the year where he badly injured his wrists and hands... he was still recovering when he finished recording and ultimately touring The Nylon Curtain album there in 1982. 🤗 1973/4-1979/80 I went to ALOT of Bar/Bat Mitzvahs on "The Island" 😉 and I bet 1/2 the audience had memories of him being the entertainment aka "The Piano Man everyone hired" for their kids. 🤔 That also explains some of the lines in his song 'Only The Good Die Young'! 😂 I knew ALOT of those "Catholic Girls" he talks about. By 1982 after The Stranger Album Tour & SNL + American Bandstand performances, it was no more Local Clubs on the Island, Grad Parties or Bar/Bat Mitzvahs for the Piano Man. 🤷🏿‍♀️ Same with Bruce Springsteen on the real Jersey Shore he be singing about. 😒 Not that fake MTV crap. After 'Dancing in The Dark', no more Local Jersey Juke Joints. 😁 Glad you enjoy Billy. ☺️🐰

Dereck!!! Where's this going? What's next? Brilliant comments. There are a LOT of Billy Joel pieces I call "pieces," because calling them songs is almost insulting. He does a lot of this where he's not afraid to put together what might be three songs for another writer. And the thing is he not only wrote the music, but he wrote the lyrics, sings the song like that's all he does, and he plays the piano better than other artists who are considered good piano players.
