Billy Squier definitely does not get the respect he deserves. He has SO MANY great tunes. But he always seems to get forgotten when people are talking about great talents, even as a really good guitar player. Sad that that one disastrous music video (Rock Me Tonight) basically ruined his career and also tarnished his legacy. :-(

I've heard this song probably hundreds of times over the years on the radio; and for some reason, now for the first time, I'm really getting a Zeppelin vibe - with both the drums and guitar, especially from the bridge on, (okay, disclaimer - I'm not equating this to anything Page or Bonham did in terms of pioneering musicianship - just the overall sound strikes me as similar to something like - Nobody's Fault But Mine. I don't know. Feel free to disagree on that if you want). But then the double time speed up at the end gave me GnR Paradise City vibes too. Just a really cool song. It was all going so well for Billy until his "Rock Me Tonight" music video.

I saw BIlly in St. Louis when he was on tour for his 1991 album Creatures of Habit. The group I was with, along with about 25 other people, waited for him after the show to meet him. Billy's people made everybody form a single file line, and one by one, we had a meet and greet with him on the steps of one the tour buses. He was nice and allowed pictures to be taken too. Billy was very instrumental in bringing Def Leppard to the US. He worked/collaborated with Freddie Mercury; Freddie sang on a couple tracks on Billy's 1986 album, Enough Is Enough. Billy's first album in a studio came from his first band, Piper, but he was originally in a band called The Sidewinders, before Piper. While many would argue that the downfall of Billy's career was his Rock Me Tonite video, he continued to release albums into the 90's. Hear And Now, Creatures Of Habit and Tell The Truth are all very good, solid albums that did not get the recognition/air play that they deserved. Billy got soured on the music business and had a contentious relationship with his record label, Capitol Records, going back to 1986's Enough Is Enough. In the early 90's, there was a phenomenon of music called Grunge, coming out of the Pacific Northwest, that took the nation by storm (think Nirvana, Pearl Jam). During this time, Billy was under contract to produce one more album with Capitol Records. CR pressured him to put out in the direction of Grunge and Billy disagreed....ultimately he released the album that came to fruition, Tell The Truth. That was his final album with Capitol Records and the contentious relationship he had with them, hence the album title and the first song from it, Angry ( a good hard rocker, btw). The fact of the matter is Billy doesn't have to produce any music, to keep making a living from it. He was smart in his career where he owns all the rights to all of his music -- how often do we see musicians/artists that have little to nothing, because they made poor business decisions by signing away their music and catalogs? In addition, Billy's song The Big Beat, off his debut album of being a solo artist, The Tale Of The Tape, is the most sampled song in history, from hip hop/rap "artists"....so imagine all the royalties hes' getting from that. Brad & Lex, and to everybody else who is not familiar, listen to Billy's songs G.O.D., Angry, and You Should Be High, Love.

Billy Squire was a guitar rock GOD in the era of radio. So many killer songs. And then, early in the age of music videos, when the format was being established… he made that “Rock Me Tonight” video, wherein he flounced around in like he was in the movie Flashdance or something, to some bullshit synthesizer noise. Like they say, “Video killed the radio star”. This song, and most of the rest of his catalog bangs, tho.

Big, hard arena rock. One of the reasons why Billy's songs rocked so hard was because his producer at the time was Reinhold Mack, who would very shortly become Queen's producer as well. If you listen to Billy's music from this period, you can hear that Queen sound percolating in the background--and sometimes in the foreground. There was Queen/Squier cross-pollination going on as well, such as Billy's song "Love Is The Hero" which has Freddie on background vocals(!).

I saw Billy Squire with Queen in the 80’s, GREAT SHOW (Rose Garden in Portland, OR)! Billy sang back-up for Queen’s BACK CHAT and Freddie sang on a few of Billy’s songs (“Emotions in Motion”for one).

In this episode of Brad & Lex, Brad likes the mood laid out for him. Its true because he's placed in position to signify his signature "side to side sway" but not without his audio input as Lex praises the "oooh" factor broadcasting her "double wrist/single wrist rock bop".

Billy Squier's " Don't Say No" album really captured a moment in time --- you hear strains of 1970s Hard Rock , but the production of the record was getting into slick 1980s Metal territory. Billy' s vocals seemed to channel Robert Plant , while the guitar riffs are drenched in Jimmy Page' s aggressive Blues influences. A LANDMARK transitional record from one era ... Into another. Say Billy live twice during the early 80s ... His ENTIRE band set the stage on fire 😎

Lex, your view is not wrong - the precision of this particular song is part of its appeal. Every single note is placed where it ought, no wasted notes, no wasted time.
