Billy Strings plays his song "Love And Regret" live in concert before a sold-out crowd at the Camp Winnarainbow benefit concert at Herbst Theater in San Francisco, California on September 29, 2022. Love And Regret appeared on Strings' third studio album, Renewal (2021). Joining him in this performance were Chris Masterson (guitar) and Eleanor Whitmore (fiddle). In introducing the song, Strings said its genesis came from a dream about Jerry Garcia, and he decided to play it at the show given Jerry's connection to San Francisco.
Strings performed as part of a songwriters' circle at Toward The Fun(ds): A Concert Benefitting Camp Winnarainbow. The camp, founded by Wavy Gravy, is a kids' summer camp focused on circus, juggling, acting, songwriting, and clown performance. It provides scholarships to families in need to keep the camp open to all children. To donate in support of these efforts, please visit www.campwinnar....

Love And Regret lyrics:
Down by the river
The water’s cold
Used to have a girl but that’s alright
She came to me in a dream
And slipped away like a running stream
The hours of silence
In the light of the moon
Brings to me a sense of ease
There’s nothing else that I could do
For that woman won't be pleased
I see her running
But I’m not the same
I’ve chased after pleasure
To bury my pain
But it’s resurrected
When I say her name
My love and regret are one in the same
The scream of a raven
The screech of an owl
A heartbroke and lonesome coyote howl
Those old Hartford records we used to play
And the silence when she went away
A flower illustrated in bloom
Floating on a wisp of consciousness
She rides innocently down the river to
the place where the light lives
And shrugs off enchantment with a sigh
Dreaming from the first moment of her life
Unheard songs bathed in silver ring out as
morning rolls into the endless
I see her running
But I’m not the same
I’ve chased after pleasure
To bury my pain
But it’s resurrected
When I say her name
My love and regret are one in the same
I keep wandering back
To a place in my mind
Where moonlight reflections return to her eyes
To gaze at the water once more
Before turning again to the sky
Down by the river
The water’s cold
Used to have a girl but that’s alright
She came to me in a dream
And slipped away like a running stream
Love And Regret written by William Lee Apostol a/k/a Billy Strings / Aaron Allen / Jon Weisberger

Billy Strings official bio:
Michigan-born and now Nashville-based, Billy Strings is a Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and musician, who arrived on the scene as “one of string music’s most dynamic young stars” (Rolling Stone). Strings is in the midst of a triumphant year after winning Best Bluegrass Album at the 63rd Grammy Awards for his critically acclaimed record, Home. Produced by Glenn Brown, the record also led Strings to top Billboard’s 2020 year-end charts in both Bluegrass categories-Top Bluegrass Artists and Top Bluegrass Albums-and continues to receive widespread critical acclaim. Of the release, The Associated Press proclaims, “it is his creative musical storytelling, paired with solid vocals on Home that should seal the deal, pleasing fans of the genre and creating some new ones…the perfect blend of pure talent and pluck,” while The Wall Street Journal declares, “Billy Strings has clearly emerged as a premier guitar flatpicker of this era.” Since his debut, Strings has been awarded Guitar Player of the Year and New Artist of the Year at the International Bluegrass Music Awards, selected as one of Rolling Stone’s “New Country Artists to Know” and performed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and PBS’ “Bluegrass Underground.” Known for his electric live shows, Strings will continue his extensive headline tour throughout 2021 including upcoming shows in Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago, Denver, Austin, Atlanta and Nashville among several others.

Tim - thank you! There’s so much going on here: Billy the young genius next to Jackson the poet laureate, etc. Billy commands on Jackson’s Running on Empty and Jackson lets him! Or did he not have a choice?!

Thanks so much for sharing these precious videos with us Tim. 🙏 What an incredible night that must have been! I'm 66 years old and have been a Jackson Browne fan for most all my adult life. I first saw Billy perform at the Hoxeyville Music Festival in mid-Michigan in 2017. I'd never heard of him and almost left before he went on to close out the festival that Sunday night but I'm glad I didn't because he *totally* blew me away and I've been a fan ever since. I met and talked to him after the show for a while and you couldn't hope to meet anyone as gracious, kind, humble, humorous, gracious and wise for his age. His astonishing success in the 5 short years since then has been amazing and well-deserved. (The videos I shot of his performance that night can be found here - kzbin.info/door/leb_u9j8vTeIpsRFWmzqOgvideos )️ Apologies for the long-winded segue...🙄Fast-forwarding back to now: To see and hear Billy sitting *right next to* Jackson and joined by Emmylou, Steve and those other fine musicians has been a unique treat and delight. I wish I'd been there but thanks to you and your camera all of us who weren't there are now been able to at least partially experience the event for ourselves. Thoroughly enjoyable. ❤ Great job!👍

I know people go on and on about billy's guitar playing, and he is a great guitar player, but bluegrass is full of great guitar players.what stands out about Billy is his ability to be the whole package Singe,r Songwriter, musician, and performer, and can play in many styles.most artist can't check all those boxes.

I feel fortunate enough to have found Billy early on and see him at several small venues. I miss those days but he deserves all of his successes. It makes me happy to see him up there on stage with some of my other musical heroes.

This is easily one of the most beautiful songs lyrically I've ever heard. He can really do no wrong. Even as a person who is not a huge dead fan, when he covers dead songs I become a fan.

Loving these videos. I had Jackson Browne's Running on Empty in my head last two days and love how Billy covers it. Did a little google search thinking I'd play the original and stumbled on Tim's video. How pleasing. This entire set is a treasure -- somehow I never caught wind of this show earlier this fall. The talent on stage is top notch and pretty telling when someone like Billy is invited into the fold. Such a young, humble guy with a very old soul. Man, he's seen some things and has stories to tell. Never knew that this song came from a dream with Jerry -- all the sweeter knowing that tidbit!
