The one where you said John Tunstall was like a father figure to Billy is exaggerated considering Tunstall was only 24. Tunstall needed all the help he could get in his ongoing feud with the Murphy/Dolan faction so that’s probably why he dropped the charges and hired Billy. Tunstall probably treated Billy no different to how he treated his other employees.

The life in the american frontier era was intense. Death comes left and right, more kids become orphans and more people are forced into becoming outlaws to survive. We are lucky to not live in that era but it does make a really good history.

I taught school breifly in Las Cruces, New Mexico. There was a bar turned museum, that he frequented when he was alive, that got me curious to know more about him. So I started asking the local people about him. And dig around in the local library. I quickly took notice of people's reaction. Their faces lit up like Christmas trees. So I had to know why, clearly! I was told that the U.S. , and Mexican Cattle Barons were taking land by force to graze their ever growing stock. They allegedly too, also had a hand in trying to wipe out, the Apache, Mescalero, and Comanche natives, for land, as well. That Billy was an active vigilante for the be poor. And still a hero in their eyes today. Also that these wealthly men hired lawmen to start smear campaigns,protect them and take out Billy and his gang. He I understand had to be ambushed, because he was a quick draw with his gun. He may have had some anger , issues , because his stepfather , told he and his brother that he would never have them... So sad when you think about it.

Lived in and worked a ranch in Carrizozo and White Oaks, Lincoln County New Mexico. There were a few old Mexican cowboys that said their fathers and grand dads knew the kid, and had seen him alive long after Garrett supposedly shot him. A forensic scientist compared the known photo of Billy with tha of Brushy Bill Roberts taken in the 1940's or so, and that the two men were ibe and the same. I believe them over crooked politicians.

We parted there and in a few minutes there were shots. The news soon spread that Garrett had shot the Kid at Maxwell’s home. I ran over there and Garrett, who had run out of the house, told me to go in and see if the Kid was dead.” In an interview with Miguel Otero Jr. 1938: “ There on the floor, we (Silva and Deluvina) saw Billy stretched out, face down. We turned him over, and when Deluvina realized fully it was the Kid, she began to cry bitterly, interspersing with her tears the vilest curses she could bestow on the head of Pat Garrett (who may have just walked in and noticed the Kid was now lying on his back, which will explain his version of how the Kid’s body was position). We asked permission to remove the body, Pete Maxwell suggesting removal to the old carpenter’s shop. We laid the body on the carpenter’s bench and placed candles around the corpse.” Shortly before the Kid was killed... “We had heard strange voices coming from the peach orchard but had given no thought to who it might be. If we had, the Kid’s life might have been saved. It was Pat Garrett and his two deputies. Billy would not have walked into the trap laid for him. Someone in Fort Sumner must have given Billy away.” “I have heard reports which say that Billy the Kid is still alive. I know that Pat Garrett killed the Kid on July 14, 1881, in Pete Maxwell’s bedroom. I also know with absolute certainty that he was buried in the old graveyard the next day.” and this is a quote from Frank Lobato Frank Lobato- (Friend and Fort Sumner resident, commenting on the night the Kid was killed) “Billy had been very popular at Fort Sumner and had a great many friends, all of who were indignant towards Pat Garrett. None of those people complained about anything, like the way most idiots today, we complain about the stupidest and smallest things we encounter that only a toddler would cry about. Things like, we weren't given the right drink, food or amount. Something isn't working, I'm not being tended to fast enough and so on. It is ultra impressive that he died, being one of the most Wanted men in the country yet nobody thought to take a picture of his dead body. Considering that many of the people who knew him stated they knew him for decades after his supposed death. I would think that there's more Credence to his surviving the supposed assassination by his close friend Pat Garrett who never was able to live down the fact that he couldn't prove that he had ever killed Billy the Kid.

They used it as a pretext for him to disappear. Considering not very many outside of the area knew what he look like, that was easy for him to do. They have only ever found two photographs of the man and the one is from quite a distance away.

You are exactly correct. Most "outlaws" in the late 19th century were photographed after death. Whether it be execution or being shot down in the street. Look them up. There are tons of photos of deceased outlaws online. As wanted as he was and famous as he was, somebody would have wanted to see him dead. Pictures would have been taken. Things go much easier when your Sheriff buddy "shoots" you in the dead of night. Lol I'm sure he and Pat made a deal. Billy got to keep his heart beat and half the bounty on him while leaving New Mexico for life and Garrett got the other half of the bounty and the fame and notoriety that went with killing "the most dangerous man in America" at the time.

1) Billy's grave in Fort Sumner is a shrine of sorts and advertised to anyone driving the highway there. 2) The original Lincoln county courthouse, in Lincoln, has been kept as is, even with the bullet holes from Billy's gun. 3) Little known factoid-Pat Garrett had a quick temper. He was actually elected sheriff of several counties. He was shot and killed outside Las Cruces by someone that Pat was trying to start a fight with. Pat's reputation is why the shooter was no billed by a grand jury. 4) During the filming of Young Guns 2, the director bragged that his movie would be more historically true than the John Wayne classic Chisum (which was about the Lincoln County war). When the movie came out, the Albuquerque Journal asked a historian to assess both movies. Chisum won out, but it almost goes without saying that both movies deviate from the truth. 5) The owner of a Roswell McDonald's franchise fought a long (and losing) legal battle to keep his franchise. One outstanding aspect of this store was a series of paintings on the wall that depicted the Lincoln County war. I often wonder what became of those paintings.

Billy himself was a vindictive and gutsy kid who grew up in such a tough environment. It is hard for this kid to be a law-abiding citizen when good/bad people killed his trusted friend or friends while the local government betrayed him and sentenced him to death. The bottom line is Billy had no chance to be civic or to live in a law-protected environment. When being physically bullied and not fighting back would be a quick death sentence. Billy chose to fight back and lived to his 21st year. Be assured this Billy's theme replayed many times in the world of Homosapiens since Billy's death. Be assured again this theme will continue replaying itself.

His step-fathers last name was McCarty. Billy’s last name was Bonney. His mom remarried. Billy was likely born in Coffeyville KS when it was still a territory. His step dad found out Billy’s mom had TB and skipped out on her to AZ, leaving her, Billy, and brother Robert alone in Silver City area of NM territory. She worked as a cook and washer woman. Got this from NM distant relatives.

It told the story and featured vintage and current photos of the town of Lincoln, but the story differed to an extent from others I'd watched in the past (the second one, that is). A lot of this is false such as the first killing of the sherif that Billy is supposed to have committed . There was a gunfight between the warring factions and bullets were flying everywhere from countless different guns . In all probability the fatal shot probably came from another person . Certainly there were much more dangerous men about at the time in the gangs than Billy . Also the reason why Billy got the blame ( unfairly ) was because he had changed sides in the Lincoln county wars and gone over to the side who were being taken unfair advantage of . The powers that be at the time were a corrupt band of rich landowners who had bought off the governor of the land and the local authorities . They were totally corrupt , yet held the power and wanted to make an example of Billy for daring to change sides and threatening to reveal the truth . They wanted to silence him . None of this is mentioned here and there are many other mistakes and errors . Another is that a couple more killings attributed to Billy were again in gang shootouts and were possibly not down to him although he was involved in the fight . Also it mentions here that Billy was well known for his fast gun etc . This is blatantly Not True . He was just a normal kid with a rifle and a handgun . There is NO evidence whatsoever that he had any prowess in using it . He did have a quick brain though evidently . Another thing left out is that in another killing a bounty hunter tried to kill him and Billy gave him a chance to walk away before he had to shoot him or be shot himself . Also the last two killings as he desperately tried to escape jail were against men who had fought , or were in the employ of the corrupt land owners . At least one of them was guilty of having a hand in unfair gang killings and used to allegedly goad and torture Billy while he was behind bars . Hardly the behaviour of an upright law abiding officer of the peace . And finally we come to Pat Garrett . There is little doubt according to most historians that during his life he was much more of an out law than Billy ever was . For one thing he took employment from what he KNEW was a totally Corrupt and Immoral syndicate , because they paid him well . He knew without a shadow of doubt that Billy was Innocent of many of the trumped up charges , and he knew that his Corrupt employers just wanted to silence and make an example of him so that others wouldn’t get any ideas about trying to go against them . And lastly the illegal killing of Billy himself . No mention is made here of the fact that Garrett changed his testimony TWICE during the trial . First he said that Billy had a gun ( as was mentioned incorrectly here ) then when it was pointed out that NO gun was found on Billy or anywhere near him , he said , “ oh I think it was a knife then “ It is not even positive that he held a knife either but if he did it seemed likely that he was entering the kitchen to carve himself a piece of meat to eat . Still either way , there is little doubt in hindsight that Garrett was LYING . He shot Billy in cold blood because he had been ordered to silence him by his evil and corrupt employers . And he did this all for money . From everything that I have read about him Pat Garrett was not a good person and he cowardly shot Billy who he knew had been framed and made a scapegoat . One of the few things correct in this video is the fact that Billy the Kid had a very unfortunate life , the vast majority of it , not of his own making . The Truth is very sad indeed .

You are very much correct. One thing bothers me, though. In order for Garrett to collect the reward money, he had to get hold of a person of authority that could verify the identity of the man that Garrett claimed to be Billy. That person arrived, not bringing a photographer which seem strange considering that lesser outlaws had their pictures taken after their demise in a shootout or the like. The given description did not fit Billy at all. The body was of an older man with a full beard, and wrong color of eyes. These facts I had from a book I read at a library back in the late 1980s. Unfortunately I do not recall the name of the book or the author.

It is hard to believe that childhood mortality was 25% in the tenements of New York. You see, my great-grandmother, born in 1888, endured a 50% infant mortality in her parents' generation, her own generation and she lost half her children. And that was considered normal at the time. That's how measles wiped out the Mandan Indians: not until steamboats. Billy the Kid was born within a generation of steamship transport. He may have thought 25% infant mortality was high. Once we had faster transport, 50% infant mortality seemed to be normal.

I just saw "The Kid," an interesting and mostly true story about BTK. It had a story within a story, about a boy trying to save his sister. The life of BTK as I know it was unending betrayal and tragedy. His mother's TB. The store owner who took him in killed before his eyes. The NM territorial NM governor who betrayed him. His former friend Garrett hunting him down. This was the sad, short life of BTK to me. Thank you for including scenes from "The Kid."

A little family secret is that Billy had gotten my grandfather's aunt (Peter Maxwell's sister) pregnant and Peter Maxwell helped trap Billy. Peter's sister was then wed to a man from Mexico asap! An out of wedlock child was a very bad thing at that time. It could ruin the family hopes of the mother and child. My aunt told me the story when I was old enough to hear it.

Helen Hicks . There are almost as many lies and inaccuracies in this video as there are in the films . 80% of this is wrong . Like so many other reports of Billy the Kid , they touch on the truth and then either change or embellish it . I have studied all the factual evidence that we have on this subject for years and I am afraid that people are still changing things or making things up as they go along to suit their ideas . I'm from Lincoln county New Mexico! Billy's Real name was William H Bonney, And the jail he escaped from by finding gun was not Santa Fe. it was in The old Lincoln Jail. I've been there many times you can still see the bullet holes in the wall.
