Drummer Billy Ward expatiates on the development of jazz drumming, with demonstrations of the technique of the major icons of the style. From "Voices in My Head." Fantastically informative and fun!
I posted this video out of pure admiration; hopefully it will encourage more people to buy the DVD.

I'm a metal-type drummer but this amazes me. It's such skill, yet it's a feel for the instrument. Jazz drumming is just a groove that no other genre can compete with. It really is being one with the kit.

Wow, that was astounding. So many styles for one man to have almost mastered! His Elvin Jones was unbelievable!

It's great to watch someone who has spent sooooo much time paying attention to the details and can then regurgitate the information technically. Bravo. This type of video should be part of the curriculum for every history of jazz course given. I would love to see this type of setting with different instruments.

This guy is pretty amazing that he can emulate so many variations of jazz, as interpreted by the masters over the many decades. Would love to learn from someone like this. Unfortunately no jazz teachers where I'm at. :(

jazz drumming is one of a kind, just shows each genre of genre is extremely hard and have their own hard parts to fill. Im mostly a metal drummer but jazz has taught me a lot of great fills and grooves and its great to not limit your playing style and throw different elements in.:)

Excellent, a journey through time. I played a lot as a younger guy, then came the day job, but only for about 25 years. I'm retired now and have a room dedicated to a Yamaha electric set and I would like to get good. At age 65 I hope it's not a pipe dream. Back then in the 60's, 70's we didn't have the internet. What a tremendous resource. Thank you for taking the time

I'm so glad everyone likes the vid! No list of seminal jazz drumming performances is complete without Footprints, from the second Miles Davis Quintet's album "Miles Smiles." Tony Williams on drums; probably my favorite performance of his. If you dig Max Roach, check out Duke Ellington's "Money Jungle."

Buy his DVD you wont regret it. I did'nt like Elvin Jones the first time I heard him on youtube, but now that he explains it, I now see what Elvin's playing is all about and so are the other drummers' style. And the more I understand that I have a long journey ahead of me.

If you're referring to the big cymbal to his left, that's actually a ride with a smaller cymbal (like a crash) stacked underneath it for effect.

@NPC919 this level of skills is something that can be acheived through LISTENING to the drummer he mentions... I ran over to my cd collection and immediately started reviewing the sounds of all these drummers... he totally gets them to the T! listening and imitating the sounds are the best way to improve tone, color, musicality, groove, everything, man

My only complaint: Papa didn't really begin moving to the ride cymbal until after Kenny Clarke showed up in the bebop scene. Papa checked Kenny playing the ride, and decided to do that as well. Kenny moved to Europe shortly after all that, so Papa is often credited for that, but really it should go to Kenny Clarke (not to mention that this is arguable, but thats what I've been told many times by many different cats).

Little is known about Samuelson before he joined Megadeth. It is known that he and Chris Poland played in a jazz fusion band called The New Yorkers, and that before this, both practiced and played together for many years.

I'm a heavy metal lover for some 40 years now.......but I simply adore a good jazz drummer. This guy is great. I like jazz drumming 500% more than metal drummers. I guess thats why I like bands like Smashing Pumpkins and Jimi Hendrix soo much. The drummers are highly influenced by jazz.

Yes, really great vid. His Elvin impression (full kit part) is great. And he shows how musical Max really is. Someone mentioned Tony down below. (I want to see the next few minutes of this vid!) Anyway, IMO, Tony's best work is on Wayne Shorter's "Soothsayer" from the mid 60's. That album also features what I think is the best ride cymbal sound EVER. It's a different recording situation than the mid-60's Miles stuff, and the cymbal's essence, and his technique, really come through.

@leftpuman Yeahh, with the pad and the rudiments it gets a bit tedious, it's hard not to be so. Just normal drumming is where it starts to feel real good. Then when I start jamming to music I get lost in it. I normally just stop either because my backs hurting or I don't want the neighbours to attack me :P
