I am so glad to have found Drummers Against ITK! Was doing some youtube and wiki research on Sabbath and Ward last night and was fully back in my room in 1970, 71 playing on my snare to Bill Ward!! I just absolutely revere the guy. I never became a great drummer but I can tell you he gave me a lot of joy and I still can beat the hell out of a tabletop or dashboard!! Thanks for this insight, I really think Bill deserves a lot better than he has gotten and I hope he knows there are many many folks who appreciate his massive contribution and the pure joy he has given us old drummers!

Ward's drumming on their self titled 1st LP was amazing as well. The drums in Behind the Wall of Sleep has been sampled a billion times. Ward was a Jazz and Swing player first and it complemented Iommi's riffing perfectly.

I bought it a couple of times since, but never realised. I'll have to check this out. Thanks. Technical prowess aside, my favorite thing with Sabbath is how interesting the rhythm section is, the drums and bass isn't there for the guitar to stand on but three instruments all getting the same space. The drumming is just plain entertaining and interesting. So seldom do I hear any metal that interesting to listen to for a non drummer.

drummersagainstitk -- I read that BW was down on himself (to the point of being suicidal) because he could not stay on beat. Is there any truth to this. I always thought playing around the beat was his great strength.

Don't think there is any truth to it and never seen anything of the kind said by him. He has said that "Cornucopia" had some patterns that were so complex that he was extremely frustrated and was worried he just could not get it down. But he also said that he felt he nailed it in the end.

Bill Ward has always been probably my biggest influence (Bonham is always cited and Peart is a machine) especially when it comes to style and heaviness. I particularly never thought of Iron Man as a difficult song. Ward said his style wasn't strict on time, and that reflects in my drumming, and I think of that passage in Iron Man as a creative transition back into the song (his fills really helped him achieve that half time to straight time transition). Personally for me, Sleeping Village , Wicked World, and Rat Salad, just to name a few, solidified in my mind that he is one of the greats. Heavy as can be, but has finesse when need be. It's always been difficult to recreate his style or to play his accented single strokes, but I think that itself is such a great foundation for drummers and again, is a reason why I consider him one of the greats of Rock.

Iron Man has some of my favorite drums ever, but Paranoid's entire album had drums like that. Bill Ward kinda had lovely rolls that always filled gaps perfectly in Paranoid album, and some of the drum phrases are repeated in other songs on the album. Examples: Listen to what I call "The Drigga Dooga Dooga Dooga Doom" War Pigs 5:33 = Iron Man 3:51 = Hand of Doom 1:31 - 6:29 = Rat Salad 1:03 "The Rigatoni Booga Boom" War Pigs 3:30 (the end of the phrase before solo 1, happens again at 5:26) = Iron Man 0:51 - 1:36 -1:42 = Fairies Wear Boots 4:04 "The Digga Digga Dit" War Pigs 1:56 = Hand of Doom 0:49 - 0:50 - 1:42 - 3:29 - 5:45 His cousin, "The Dugga Dugga Dum" Hand of Doom 3:33 = Fairies Wear Boots 5:51 "The Packeta Tucketa Tacketa Tum" Iron Man 3:49 = Hand of Doom 1:01 = Fairies Wear Boots 0:41 - 1:06 - 4:02 Which is your favorite? My is Drigga Dooga Dooga Doom

"PARANOID", the entire album, was the first LP where , even though I'm a (non-drummer) basically a rhythm guitarist/singer/songwriter, I found myself listening & re-listening to the drums. - - - - Perhaps it's because they were a 3 piece instrument band, so it was easier to hear each instrument, - - but it was the very first time that the drumming actually stood out for me. Of course I thought the songs were excellent, but I thought I was alone in my belief that there was something special about this drummer. But apparently at this late date, some 40+ years later, I see that I have lots of company. - - Dave

There's also a very slight tempo change there as well. The thing that really drew me into sabbath when I was young was how atmospheric they were with their sound, with Iron Man being a key example. When I was young I never realized how much Bill added to that atmosphere, now that I'm older I realized that it mostly him and his approach to his instrument.

@beasheerhan44826 жыл бұрын
I find Mr. Ward's drumming 'extremely creative', particularly in how he oft creates an entire landscape of variety behind the Gothick wall of sound put up by Butler and Iommi. The album where this was most noticeable for me is Volume 4 - in 'Wheels of Confusion', 'Under The Sun', ' Cornucopia', & 'Snowblind'. The greatest performance he gave, which remains in my memory to this day, is on 'The Wizard'. The variety of sound commentary, timbres, and textures he provides to that song are quite extraordinary, and an unusual moment when a drummer strikes a pose that is equally, or perhaps more, macabre than the other instruments. Moreimportantly than any of these things is that Mr. Ward never tried to overplay the song, and, instead, focuset on fitting in with the song. Many much more lauded drummers did not always do that, or did that not at all. Do I have to name them? No, I think not. In any case, to know how appropriate Ward was, try imagining other drummers in his place fro Black Sabbath? The only only ones I see as plausible were Bonham or Densmore. The rest are absurd to even consider in that context, either because they were not atmospherick enough, or that they oft did not integrate their playing well enough into the entire sound and expression of the group with which they played.
@Dex000x5 жыл бұрын
You should've done Faries Wear Boots. The drumming on that song is the best he's ever done. The time shift in Iron Man is cool as hell, but it isn't nearly as tough as people think. However, the way he changes tempo between the intro and verse in FWB, by using a fill that gradually slows down, is so creative it blows your mind.
@stevesut25662 жыл бұрын
I Love the way Bill swings during The Wizard and Fairies wear boots, and love the stirring soup pot snare in parts of Snowblind. Behind the wall of sleep is great to. Those drummers back then were so good and learnt from the best. There is a short section in Sweet's Solid gold brass where Mick Tucker (RIP) shows his Jazz chops..listen it's magic.

I'm in total agreement. I have 40 years behind the traps and love Ward. He's inspired me along with players like Gene Krupa, Billy Cobbam, and Buddy Rich, although Rich was a total ass hole. Iron Man is one of the toughest songs I've ever played on stage. I did a two year stint with a Sabbath tribute band and Led Zeppelin/John Henry Bonham is a breeze in comparison. We all owe Bill Ward many thanks for his music and his contribution to our craft. Love you Bill! Alex G

I've played guitar for 20+ years, I'm not great or anything, just decent, but I enjoy playing. My son wanted to play the drums, so I bought him a drum set and he took to drumming right away. When he wasn't playing I would screw around with his set and got really into playing and got amazingly OK and since sabbath is my favorite band, I wanted to play sabbath songs. I find it very difficult to play sabbath songs on the drums, for example, on snowblind he does this thing with the snare where lets the stick bounce off the snare lightly then hits it sharp, then back to lightly again etc. There is probably drumming terminology for this technique, but I don't know what it is.

I play both bass and guitar, not really a drummer, but to me, seems like there's something especial, some "je ne sais quois" with drummers that are somehow/somewhat abusive with their Tom-Tons, in a tribal or primitive manner, with a huge feeling and range of intensity and dynamics. You can see these same characteristics in Bonham's "caveman" style, also in Stewart Copeland, Mitch Mitchell/Buddy Miles, Alan White, and Mike Portnoy of course. I wish I could explain this in mkre technical terms, but all I can say is that these are the drummers that bring the most joy and fun for bassists and guitarists to play with/along.
@paulknobloch34405 ай бұрын
Nice points. Yeah, they are phenomenal. A life-changing band for me. Also, nobody talks about how Geezer and Bill formed such a hard-grooving and relentlessly swinging rhythm section. I don't care much for metal played straight. That's how much of an impact Sabbath had on me. Thanks for sharing.

The thing that makes Bill great, is the same thing that make John Bonham great, or Ginger Baker. They learned to play drums through Jazz and then translated all of that technical knowledge the the Rock N Roll of the late sixties.

this video made me subscribe, though i've admittedly never seen your other videos before watching this one. bill does not get enough credit. those first three albums (particularly before him introducing stylistic changes with double bass on IV) are raw hard rock, blues and even jazz-inspired in spots. yes, bill was not mitch mitchell, but who was or even is today? bill has swagger and swing on those first three. he has just enough technical ability to convince us on rat salad but also loads of feel and oomph to almost put it into a punk category. i love bill. i'm sad he's not on their 'final" farewell tour but i'm grateful i got to speak to him one time and see him with sabbath twice.

to me, it just seems like he had so much fun, compared to drummers of their time. he was just so damn heavy he just had so many fills all over the place, kinda like he had drank too much coffee. every opportunity he got he would drum roll, and he would beat the hell out of the symbols. if you really listen to his work, you can pick up on his contribution to modern metal drumming. if I were to pick up drumming, war pigs and iron man would be what I would start practicing.

I completely agree Bill Ward is great and in the Bonham and Paice quality for me. The last of that era. I saw Black Sabbath 3 or 4 times between 1998 and 2002 but then saw them 2005 but to me something missing and that was Bill Ward. I love the opening to War Pigs. One of my favourite Bill Ward parts in Rat Salad. Friends of mine went to see Black Sabbath the other day on The End but for me no Bill Ward, no Black Sabbath. Also don't forget he sings too. When I was learning that Paris 1970 concert had everything and his power on Behind the wall of sleep phenomenal. I see your Iron Man and raise you a Symptom of the Universe. They were all amazing on that song but lots of places for Bill to shine and he duly does. That Iommi solo is great too. After that Bill goes from a dotted eighth note bass drum pattern a la John Bonham. That song has everything. Such a shame he was not able to play on 13 and The End tour. Even Brad Wilk said he have preferred Bill Ward.

I 100% agree with you. As a guitarist, it's hard as hell to go from a transition in tempos, particularly fast to slow. But it's not too hard on guitar because when the change happens, the guitar only has to be there playing one quarter note. With the drums, Bill Ward had to play multiple instruments (in his kit) to get it to line up correctly. And the crazy thing is the entire band got this so dead on and seamless that they made it sound easy. The talent of Black Sabbath was just amazing.

Interesting re: the section of the song you mentioned ( the cut time guitar solo back to the slower 4/4 riff section ) .... I first saw Bill / Sabbath on the '78 tour and a while later acquired various bootlegs from that same tour . What I recall about those live renditions was that as the solo ends with the syncopated section , the following 4/4 riff would actually be played a miniscule fraction slower than expected . The resulting effect was to make that particular section sound even heavier than expected ( which is pretty heavy ) . Tony's guitar and Geezer's bass were completely in sync here so I assumed that this was intentional . Apart from sounding awesomely powerful , it seemed obvious that they were as tight as a camel's nostril in a sandstorm .

@@drummersagainstitk .... Yeah , that would make sense ... I had an album of his ( called weight ) which featured a great track called Vol 4 . This was for apparently no other reason than Henry was / is a huge Sabbath fan ...

Bill Ward is an animal. Underrated and underappreciated, even in the band. Listen to "Wheels of Confusion" because for any other drummer, that alone would be a credible CV. For Bill Ward it's just one track.

I LOVE the whole premise of your channel and especially the fact that I found you through THIS video... "Why is Bill Ward SO GREAT"... But the actual thing that REALLY offered me a realization as to Why I, personally discovered how great he is was watching HIM!!! HE... BILL WARD HIMSELF actually playing all his own song's (after years & years of, seems like 20-30 other drummers botching his drum parts over the years with all the incarcerations of Black Sabbath as well as all of Ozzy's bands) but especially the actual SONG "Black Sabbath" mostly the atmospheric parts in the versus & watching how BILL himself plays his own songs on the DVD "The Last Supper" because back in the day you didn't HAVE KZbin obviously or EVEN MTV at that time... So all I, as a drummer could go by was listening to the song on the actual vinyl and trying to figure out how he played the parts he did & again, specifically, THE SONG Black Sabbath seeing how Bill Ward HIMSELF lol played HIS own actual parts... so when you go back and see you know on KZbin other drummers trying to play as parts you kind of laugh and say that's not what he was playing at all!!!! Lol So anyways I'll end it there hate to fill up your whole comment section but thanks again Wood for your channel! Keep it going!!!! 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼

i'll take bill ward in a new york second. he's definitely one of my top ten, esp. when it comes to hard rock/heavy metal drumming. dude, i kept expecting you to bang out some sabbath beats, cuz you're sitting at a nice kit.

Thx man. I wanted to give younger players historical perspective and speciifics on the technical aspects of Bill's playing rather than me playing.

yes! i was hoping to see the end of iron man done under this excellent flag you've raised. quarter notes on the bass drum or eighth notes on that part? i've never investigated far enough but i suspect quarter. i used to exhaust myself doing eighth notes and all the tom stuff. hard to dissect with geezer's bass-playing in that spot. salud!

I loved them both. Please look at my videos called Psycho Riffs in Rock 1-5. Let me know what you think. I mention Barlow on one of the licks.
