For all the (justifiable) reverence of Hitchcock and Kubrick, this guy might actually be the GOAT. His catalogue can rank with anybody.

A good year indeed. The Apartment and Psycho. I think Hitchcock innovated more that year in terms of storytelling and camera movement. But The Apartment is one of my favourite films of all time. I love Billy Wilder!

He should've won for Vertigo, this film and Rear Window. I'll give it a pass for On the Waterfront to win Best Picture. However, Hitchcock should've won for directing Rear Window. The directing in that movie is phenomenal. I like how the film is set in one location. Such a clever movie. On the Waterfront's direction is no where near to the direction of Rear Window.

Were they seating folks according to last name? Wilder wins 3 Oscars and they have him seated in the lobby. Good thing he could still move. He was an absolutely brilliant movie maker. He would be on my Mount Rushmore of movie makers (producers/directors/writers) for sure along with Spielberg and perhaps Hitchcock , Ford or Zannuck.

To add to the confusion between the two men. Billy Wilder was nominated for best director and should have won in 1944 for his great film Double Indemnity but lost to Going My Way. He did win the next year in 1945 for The Lost Weekend, generally considered a weaker or inferior film. In 1946 best director went to William Wyler for the Best Years of Our Lives. Wyler won best director again in 1959 for perhaps directing his greatest film Ben-Hur. Next year in 1960 Billy Wilder won again for director for The Apartment.

Hitchcock certainly desreved to win a competitive Oscar for best director for several classic films: Vertigo, North By Northwest, Notorious and Rear Window, however, the choice of The Apartment was also quite worthy from an artistic standpoint. I believe that the pinnacle of Wilder's career was Sunset Boulevard.

Alfred Hitchcock wasn't even nominated for directing Vertigo. The Oscar went to Vincente Minnelli for Gigi. That movie stole awards from Vertigo like Score, Film Editing, Director and Picture. Lol.

@@laurajones1773 I am baffled about the recent praise for Vertigo. I think the story is ridiculous and it is way too long. The filming is beautiful but way too much spent driving around San Francisco. I think Notoios, N by NW, Shadow of a Doubt, are all superior Hitchcok to Vertigo. Gigi is perfection. The last great MGM musical. Minelli's dierection is absolutely sublime .Every scene is like an exquisite painting

Wilder is an amazing director, there's no doubting that! However, given that this was the last film that Hitchcock was nominated "Best Director" for, and his competition the other four times, this should have been his turn. so well deserved! the genius Mr. Wilder for THE APARTMENT. nune of the other nominees comes Close, imo! Cardiff comes at a second Place of the nominees for SONS AND LOVERS. but he still did not came near to Mr. Wilder. all the nominees here (Wilder for THE APARTMENT, Dassin for NEVER ON SUNDAY, Cardiff for SONS AND LOVERS and Zinnemann for THE SUNDOWNERS) exept for the so overrated Hitchcock for PSYCHO deserved to be in their imo. Mr. Brooks for ELMER GANTRY should have been nominated instead of Hitchcock. there are so many people who Thinks PSYCHO by Hitchcock deserved its Oscar here-but I could not disagree more! he and bergman is the two most overrated directors in Cinema history. PSYCHO has not even good writers, producers, tographers, costumes, sounds and many more things wich is the reason why Hitchcock dont deserved to be in there. THE APARTMENT has Everything Amazing! the story, the screeplay, the atcting, sound, effects, cinematography, songs, art direction, Writing, costumes, editing, direction, and of course the Picture itself (wich is imo one of the best Movies evermade) ! Itresting how ELMER GANTRY (by Mr. Brooks) and SPARTACUS (by Kubrick) was not nominated here (even of I Think SPARTACUS sucked and the direction was bad) beacuse they won so many other Awards. but THE APARTMENT, SONS AND LOVERS, THE SUNDOWNERS, NEVER ON SUNDAY, ELMER GANTRY and LATE ATUMN by wilder, Cardiff, zinnemann, dassin, brooks and ozy where the right guys to direct this ´great films`. :)

I don't think the Apartment is a great movie. Lemmon, MacLaine and MacMurray are fine. The film score is uninspired. The cinematography is under-lit. The screenplay is underwhelming. (The big office set is brilliant.) The movie takes a long time to not go anywhere in particular. The movie won best director Oscar in a particularly weak field.
