@@jmadratz Many years ago Redford might have been a conservative before Republicans lost their minds but not in recent years. Redford endorsed both Obama and Biden for president, and has been publicly VERY critical of Trump saying "he lacks a moral compass". He also supports environmentalism, Native American rights, and LGBT rights. There is no way you can add up all that and call Redford a conservative today.

I honestly thought MTM was fantastic, but Sissy Spacek did a flawless performance. I did believe that John Hurt should’ve won for Elephant Man or it should’ve at least garnered some awards in make up and costumes, or cinematography. Some years the competition is just so tough!! He gave it a venue, but Sam Goldwyn was an independent when he won Best Picture for Best Years of Our Lives in 1947 (he wasn't expecting to win because he was outside the studio system). Joseph E. Levine was involved in almost 500 movies, including the Italian movie that won Sophia Loren the 1st foreign language Oscar in 1962. Sundance allowed corporations access to buy independent film for distribution, but independent film had been around for decades, or we wouldn't have had Dwain Esper, Ed Wood or Plan 9 From Outer Space.

The reason why Robert Redford deserved this award even more than the picture itself: It's all about DIRECTing. I have never seen another movie, where a DIRECTOR gets so much out of such kind of a cast. I have nothing against Timothy Hutton or Judd Hirsch, but be honest: Their performances in Ordinary People are by far the best of both of their careers. Mary Tyler Moore plays a character nobody ever would have believed she would be capable of. Just a reminder: Moore was at the time an actress famous for TV comedy series like the Mary Tyler Moore Show. Transforming her charming personality in such a "perfect unlikable" mother, which we hate for her actions and admire for the acting, is simply astonishing. And even Donald Sutherland did one hell of job, although the tone of the movie wasn't new ground for him. To summarize: The reason, why such an unusual cast could have worked so perfect, is the marvelous direction by Robert Redford. And that's why he deserved this in my humble opinion (slightly) over Scorsese for Raging Bull.

I love Robert Redford. For all the people saying Scorsese should have won, he was fairly new to the Academy game while Redford had been considered snubbed by the Oscars for years. Redford wasn't nominated for several movies he should have been nominated for (The Candidate, Butch and Sundance, Downhill Racer, etc.) so it was about time the Academy gave him recognition. Scorsese's win came late, but so did Redford's. I'm glad he won.

That just isn't true!!! An absolute newcomer like John G. Avildsen (now remembered - if remembered at all - for "The Karate Kid") won the Best Director Oscar for "Rocky" - his first nomination for his first real mainstream film!!! He somehow defeated Sidney Lumet, Alan J. Pakula, Lina Wertmuller, and INGMAR BERGMAN!!! Another proof of the misguided, absurd Academy choices!!!
@MovieBuffGinna
@MovieBuffGinna 10 жыл бұрын
Just because the Academy has made some stupid choices doesn't mean they always pick the wrong man. I'm not saying Redford's direction in Ordinary People surpasses Scorsese's in Raging Bull, but that does NOT mean Ordinary People is a undeserved and mediocre film. Redford should have won an Oscar before the year 1980 and the Academy knew that.

I just watched ordinary people again at the age of 34, after seeing it first when I was 20 years old. after being profoundly moved by this film at an emotional age of 20, I was surprised that I was even more moved by seeing this film recently a second time, after being emotionally numb to a majority of the films of the recent years (last film that had a deep impact on me was the social network). after all these years I have realized that who the director was, what actor deserved to win the Oscar, what other film was more deserving to be the best picture, etc. is all secondary to sitting down, planting your eyes on the screen, and being deeply emotionally moved by a film. this film has moved me more than any other film I have ever seen in my life, and I am truly grateful for that. in a close second is a film called whale rider. in third I have rocky 1. obviously different people are going to have different films that move them for different reasons, as no two people are the same. but ordinary people, whale rider and rocky 1 are my top 3.

James Bonogofski, I was 19 the first time I saw "Ordinary People" and it blew me away just as you describe in your experience. Now, at 36 and having just watched it again tonight, it still resonates profoundly and deeply. It deserved every award it received in 1981. It's a phenomenal film, and still one of the best and most emotionally impactful for me personally as well.

James Bonogofski This movie was an unlikely hit when it was first released, and for a good reason. It is sensitively directed and has some great performances (Donald, Mary, Timothy, Judd). One of those films you can watch repeatedly and always find something new and revealing.

@@CJLOVE23 I've never despised Brad Pitt. I just don't think he was as handsome as Redford once was. I always thought of him as "extremely cute". As a matter-of-fact, I was always amused by whatever reviewer it was who referred to Pitt in A River Runs Through It as "portrait of an actor as a young Bob."!

Yes, true; but Ordinary People is also an excellent movie. 3 great films in 3 very different genres, where only one can win, makes the Oscar a bit of a lottery, really. I think they all know that, in Hollywood.

It was no surprise Redford would direct an "ordinary" masterpiece From the very first I felt he was a very easy going deep human being beyond the celluloid image. Someone I would enjoy speaking with over a well crafted cold one.

OP deserved this Oscar!. Just watched it again tonight on DVD. Got it after the passing of MTM 6 days ago. First saw it as a 13 year old. Couldn't really appreciate it back then. Now in late 40's... wow. One of my favorite films of all time. And it's the kind of movie I can watch over and over. Seen it probably 50 times? Love the chemistry between Hutton and hirsh.... they both were amazing in this film.
