@@Flowermedal just the slow march of history, kind of the opposite to the great man theory. Where all of civilisation, progress etc is built of the back of billions of individuals, soldiers, traders, scalars, religious leaders, tyrants, mothers etc. Some revered, most simply forgotten. All leading rich and interesting lives, all with tragic deaths, but with all of our combined efforts leading us to the present day with the set of circumstances we live under. People are just individual eggs but together civilisation is the omelette.

Woods is a lyrics prophet that evokes emotions I didn’t know I could feel His words are raw much like Earl or Navy Blue, but there’s something about Billy and the way he speaks, the way he scripts down a flow of conscious thought that allows us to voyeur his day to day life (especially Maps because it feels like he’s writing an autobiography) BUT DUDE PLEASE, go back and listen to his 2012 work “History Will Absolve Me” its in my top 5 albums of all time. It’s about African Apartheid and the song Pompeii and Body of Work are insane.

Maybe it's the "Feelin Good" interpolation, maybe the Tim Blake Nelson direction, maybe the rarity of Woods' face half revealed, maybe that unreal beat, maybe each, but more likely, it's all of it. Because how could an artist as singular, dedicated and deep as Woods, being in full stride and at the height of his powers as he is, not register on every level? This is no mere fluke or happenstance, this convergence of all elements being heightened to their highest - this is the fruit of a toil long in the process and its speciality was surely not without its share of difficulty. You experience this work and you are kind of left scratching your head going "how...?" but then you think for half a second and realize - oh of course, it could not be any other way, of course his sensibility in one sphere must overlap into the next, and of course he can manage them each with as much grace and force as any master of their craft - for he has attained inevitability ladies and gentleman, and save your seats because I have a feeling he is nowhere near an ending.

Wonderful. Having long loved Woods’ discography, it moves me to hear such an optimistic track. And the melancholy/dissonance is not lost on me. It’s like hearing Earl’s 2010- a form of joy from a man who’s seen the void. The multi-layers of self-allusion, his unparalleled ability to map themes, histories, diction, peoples and places in time, fun-house mirror-rooms of constellative images- the man is a paragon of story-telling. He’ll be one of the Irreplaceables that, were I to outlive him, I’ll obnoxiously remind my progeny that they missed the era of a genius. I admire Woods’ Sappho-like purposefully abstruse self-declarations; it almost seems to me, the way he controls/limits his public images, the way he requires listeners (and readers, he is a wealth of enrichment to be read and analyzed) to fill in the negative space of his canvases with subtext like a Rorschach test- yes, his Dostoevskian propensity for world-rending storytelling cleaves tectonic plates so chasmic that there’s room for every listener to ball his own life’s tale into a bundle and throw it into the spaces between- instills in me a feeling of kinship familiarity and utter isolation from the man himself, like I could live in a version of the world he’s illustrated, but couldn’t ever fathom the creator behind the curtain. I’m in awe of Woods. He’s a poet in a tradition he honors in upholding. If I ever met him, though, I don’t know what I’d say. I’m almost certain he’d rather exist beyond the touch of mere appreciators in favor of real comrade commiserators, and I just haven’t suffered enough to deserve to shake his hand. If we met in heaven, maybe then I’d wash his feet and tell him all he’s done for me. May any power that be bless Billy Woods. Amen.
