How to check, diagnose, disassemble, clean and bleed BMW hydraulic valve lifters HVA (lash adjusters). I also show how the inside of a lifter looks like (check valve, spring).
I diagnose a BMW 116i N43 engine crank, no start, knocking sound, with VANOS and low oil pressure MSD80 INPA codes. Copper bearing material in oil filter, clogged VANOS solenoids. Car has 216.000 km.

I just finished installing the camshafts without touching the lifters as I thought "Ah, they should be fine, there is nothing to fail in them." How little did I know 🙂

Thanks for a great video Should the cylinder head be reassembled with the lifters collapsed so that they can self adjust on start up?

Good point! It's usually not an issue because the lifters have some time to bleed a little bit of pressure out before instalation and startup. For example, new lifters come prefilled with oil and they feel pretty much solid. I also could not find any specific instructions or information in the BMW manual regarding lifter installation. However if you want to be 100% safe, you can use a little piece of wire and release a little bit of oil pressure. There is a procedure for bleedint the lifters: let the engine run at 2000-3000 rpms for 4 minutes, then idle for 30 seconds, repeat the process until the lifter ticking sound is gone.

Thanks for a great video!!! It will be nice if you can do a video of removing all hydraulic lifters? Should we buy new ones or just service old and is there any procedure that we should trigger in software after service?

Lifters are pretty robust components and dont go bad that often on newer engines. This engine had bearing material in the oil so I had to clean them. Got money? Replace all lifters at ~10 EUR a piece:) Preffer to spend money on other things? Clean them first and bleed and check if they hold pressure, as I did in the video. Replace only suspect lifters:) There is a procedure for bleeding the lifters: let the engine run at 2000-3000 rpms for 4 minutes, then idle for 30 seconds, repeat the process until the lifter ticking sound is gone.

my lifters start ticking if i push my engine hard but if i drive it normal it doesnt tick. Any guesses why that happens?

If I compare the Lifter on your Video N43 there is a hole on the top on the lifter but in the Motor n46b20 there are no hole on the top on the lifters? Shold i remove this lifters to the n43 type? Br MS

Just confirmed your findings on my N46 engine. No way to check operation but plungers rotate freely and lengths all the same (34.5mm +/-01mm). No discernible plunger travel. No info found on the web.

I have found in my 2001 N42 lifters without hole on top. So no cleaning for me. They rotate but not asingle one wants to be pressed. I am going to replace them as i dont like wear I se on ball. I have found one exhaust roller stuck in oil drain hole.

The N43 is a terrible engine in my opinion, especially due to piezo injectors, and Nox sensor issues. I am curious if you will be able to make this engine running smoothly. I gave up, but I keep my fingers crossed for you ; )

what i dont understand is, after all that effort, labour, cost. why would you clean a worn lifter that cost around 15 bucks, and put it back in? There is a reason why ladies dont was their pads or tampons and put it back in.
