Thanks, John Chu. I haven't lived in Philly in 50 years. I remember the stations as dark, dingy, dangerous and smelly. I remember the old rolling stock of the 50's and 60's, and how exciting it was to be able to catch a brand new Budd train. These stations and trains are quite attractive. It is sad to see them so empty. One of the Philly transit nostalgia items I have yet to see/hear, is the old Broad Street Line cars, with that lumbering, vibrating low pitching groan as they started...It's still in my ears. I'd love to be able to hear that sound again.

I mean could you send me to a more dangerous neighborhood? I'm dreading walking back to the subway, someone shouldn't crack me over the head and steal my bag, 'becuse I'll be lying there on the street in this neighborhood and people will spit on me and empty my pockets. I'll lie in the gutter like a bum, like a dog, like a mutt, like an animal! God forbid someone should help me or call an ambulance. No, that's too much trouble to pick up a phone and press a few buttons. Ahh! What's the point.

Sorry for late reply. Most things are within walking distance. Philly is a very walkable city. The subway system is pretty good in Philly.. lots of options from what I saw.

youtuber rakesh NO Philly does not have a system like New York Boston chicago DC LA Cleveland Seattle etc. there is a streetcar network, three metro lines, and a separate metro line to NJ.

Does the subway itself gets packed like here in NYC?
@JohnChu5 жыл бұрын
Don’t know. I only saw a small portion of the whole system. But NYC is definitely more crowded.
@brenden96064 жыл бұрын
It does. I’m not sure at what time this is filmed, but on every week day there are massive crowds on the platforms and the trains. The crowds are definitely as big as NYC’s during rush hour.

i question the usefulness of a subway when you can see the previous AND next stations by looking down the tunnels, often close enough to see individual people. on my last visit, i made a bet with someone for $50; that i could walk to the next station before the train got there. i won.
@JohnChu7 жыл бұрын
In NYC, I would never ride the train for one stop, (unless of course, that one stop crosses the east river) as It would be financial suicide unless I had an unlimited pass. If one calculates the time waiting for train + walking in and out of the station---it is much faster to walk one stop.
@penguinmaster77 жыл бұрын
indeed. my time in NYC over christmas 2015, i would ride the subway one stop simply because i memorized the subway routes faster than i could the streets. had a one-week unlimited ride pass, so that definitely helped in learning. i also got very confused about the whole "rush hour on the NYC subways" thing. i didn't think it was that bad.

In philly these line were built in early 1900 like 1909. There was a need back then.

Well, of course, if you are getting on at 11th and off at 8th, or on at 5th and off at 2nd St. but if you are getting on at 11th and going to 60th? I don't see the issue! Of course, it would be nice to have double tracking and express services, but Philly never got that far.
