the sound of the Express trains is deafening lol. When the Line was originally planned and built there was no Express service. the center lines were to bypass track work. it wasn't until the 1950s that express tracks were laid completely down the line.Although the Broad Street Line was originally planned in the 1920s to be a 4-track facility for its entire length (Fern Rock portal to Snyder), the tunnel was built with provision for 4 tracks only from the portal to just north of Lombard-South. At the time of opening, the outer 2 tracks were built along this length, whereas the inner 2 express tracks were built only in two sections, from the Fern Rock portal/shops to just south of Olney, and from Girard to their terminus just north of Lombard South. To close the gaps, the two inner express tracks were laid from Erie to Girard in 1959, and again from Olney to Erie in 1991.

Yes, the Ridge Spur portion of the station is very neglected with the exception of LED signage and the yellow ridged line for the visually impaired. At least they did some work on the Broad Street Line portion of the station.

It use to have tiled pillars and a much longer platform. The 70s Heroin flow and 80s crack epidemic hit this area pretty hard. Leaving septa to neglect the station for sometime now. Other then LED lighting (which was done very recently) and closing off the platform end in 1989 they haven't really done much on the line. Chinatown station being an exception because the regional rail tunnel construction erased the original station and they built a new one with a small emergency stairway to the regional rail tunnels.

And, may I add that the 8th and Market station on the PATCO Line was also originally the station for the Broad-Ridge Spur and the former Delaware River Line that went to Camden's Broadway Station. The DR is now, of course, PATCO and Broadway Station has since been renamed to and is part of the Walter Rand Transportation Center. Anyway, north of PATCO 's 8&M station, there is a stub that goes up a ramp. That was part of the ramp the southbound Ridge Spur trains descended from Vine Street Station to enter the 8&M station, thus merging with the DRL. However, in late 1968 with the newly formed PATCO from the Delaware River Port Authority, coupled with reconstruction of 8th Street, the ramp was permanently sealed, turning it into a storage stump for the then-new PATCO trains and a permanent chain link fence placed between the eastbound PATCO track and the then-new merged northbound - southbound track for the Spur shortly before the now - closed (but may open again) PATCO Franklin Square Station and the Spur's Vine Street Station, since replaced by the Chinatown Station. The switch tracks that merged the two lines together were also removed, although the current tracks more or less follow the same layout, but of course, without the switch. The current 8th and Market Station for the Spur opened in 1969, the City's first new subway station in 14 years.

One thing i liked about the trains in Atlanta is that they were really quiet even on the outside and i don't know if that is due to its wheel diameter size which the MARTA's CQ312 has 34.4882" Diameters but the SEPTA's Kawasaki B-IV has 28" Diameters i would like to know if my theory is correct... Bigger wheel diameter = Less RPM on Steel/Quiet Train & Smaller Wheel Diameter = More RPM on Steel/Louder Train

What is the Broad Ridge Spur is it a part of the Broad St. Subway?
@CaseysTrains
@CaseysTrains 8 жыл бұрын
When the Broad St Subway started there were 5 lines planed to radiate out a downtown city loop (which the Market Frankford before 1956 and the Trolley still loop around city hall.) only 3 were built, the main Broad St subway from Olney to Synder, the Locust-Broad trains who ran from Girard to 15-16th St/Locust and the Bridge Line that ran from 15-16th St to Camden. In 1968, the bridge line was sold to PATCO making the Locus-Broad trains only run from Girard to 8th-Market where they ended in a new station above the current PATCO station. This is how the Ridge Spur was born. Today it just simply a shuttle train from Olney to 8th-Market.

You forgot one important thing. the PTC had originally planned to build a line west from Snyder Ave too. which if you notice there is a weird curve before the station. that's because the branch west was originally supposed to go behind the station. I think they wanted one island platform and one side platform. but the idea was scrapped, giving Snyder Ave that awkward turn.

So with the southbound passage closed, how does one get from the southbound side to the broad ridge spur without having to pay again? Cause I understand, you’d have to exit the southbound side and then re-enter (swipe your key card) on the northbound side

@@thefateofslate9095the one little nitpick I have against The Broad Street Line is local stops not having a crossover. You actually have to enter the subway on the Northbound or Southbound side of the street like you were driving to your destination in a car. Meanwhile The Market-Frankford Line has a crossover for every stop
