Ruyi was Hailan's strength and protector for so long. Later after Hailan had learned to play the game she protected and avenged Ruyi. I agree they were 2 sides on the same coin though.
What a terrible, toxic place. Mei came in a talented, carefree girl. At least she realised that Ruyi was innocent.

Dang. I mean, it sucks that Yongcong died, but Langhua had this coming for the longest time because of her constantly harming other consorts and concubines. Her karma from killing Concubine Mei's kid especially came back to bite her in the ass in this part, and while I won't deny that she did deserve it a million times over, losing a child is still heartbreaking.

The insertion of the crows crying in the background is an amazing detail they’ve added. “Crows are thought to be the mediator between life and death As a carrion bird, they eat the dead, making them embody death and lost souls They are the reincarnation of damned souls and were seen as bearers of tragic news, usually announcing the death of a hero” When the crows began to cry, they were warning an impending death, foreshadowing that the 7th Prince’s fate was already sealed. Amazing amazing directing!!

So true. And a flock of crows is called a murder..... fitting but horrible.
this is just my theory but being a completely fictional character unlike the other, Concubine Mei was created to in a way replace Concubine Yi. In the history, Concubune Yi died early. But they want the victim from that incident to have more role. In harem, you cannot survice without getting your hand dirty. Since Ruyi here does not want to kill children and she wont let Hailan do it, Mei pin is use by the author to overthrow one of Ruyi’s enemy.
@katherinkeegan86012 жыл бұрын
Concubine Mie was a very tragic figure. She was poisoned while pregnant, her physical health never recovered and she became mentally unstable due to grief. As a result, she was so easy to manipulate. Later as she is preparing to die thinking she has avenged her baby, Ruyi tells her she was mistaken on who killed her baby. She dies knowing she was just a pawn for others and never got justice for her baby or herself. I feel Ruyi could have kept silent and let her die thinking she got revenge. What harm would it have done?

Concubine Mei was unstable especially after she lost her child. She never recovered from the loss as well as her health issues. That is no excuse for what she did to a child. It's mind boggling to think that this was a common practice back then. Killing children so that your child to be the 'chosen' is heartbreaking in this series. The Harem was filled with murderous wenches, and the Empress was the wenchiest of all! Losing a child is devastating, but consequences for evil actions is called karma, and the empress certainly has a lot of bad karma coming her way!
@shio51865 ай бұрын
Such practice were not the norms back then though. The ladies in the harem were said to be amicable with each other most of the times & almost all of them are sheltered noble ladies who are accustomed to living like a family with fellow concubines. Children usually died young back then mostly due to lack of proper health care. It's just that palace dramas like this are based on novels that are not historically accurate but interesting altogether. An example is in the novel this drama was based on, the main antagonist of the story is WYW but historically she and Ruyi could have had a good relationship because a portrait of Ruyi was later found in her belongings even after the Emperor ordered to destroy every portraits of RY.

I haven't reached yet in this part but it's kind of ironic how in the original novel Hailan* & Ruyi were gloating and outright enjoying the weeping during the mourning ceremonies of Crown Prince Duanhui (2nd prince Yong'lian), and now both of them are outright refusing to harm 7th prince Yongcong as being "immoral" *in the original novel, Hailan is indeed the culprit behind Yong'lian, while in the drama novelization it's Hailan (perhaps urged unconsciously by Jin Yuyan's psyching) feat. Lianxin (with exposition of her Wangqin PTSD and that Langhua must suffer her part) & 3rd prince Yongzhang's cloth doll...both versions utilize reed flowers
@juliaalexander57882 жыл бұрын
I'm also not sure why no one really caught on that since the women in the Harem could not be punished due to their tribe in court, then people targeted their children instead. Empress, Noble Consort, and Jia do what they did in this show as well in the book?

As with most dramatizations, there is major changes from the book. Ruyi wouldn't look like the sympathetic character if she is portrayed like the book. Apparently in the book she ties A'Rou in a sack with several feral cats as well. Again not the best look for the main love interest character.

I am curious if the Royal babies are cared by nursemaid during this era/dynasty would it mean they are the one who breastfeed the royal babies and not their actual birth mothers who are concubines?

Yes. The nursemaid breastfeed all the royal babies. Their moms breast milk is for the emperor... 🤦🤦🤦
@xinnamon_roll2 жыл бұрын
ya you are correct
@nekonette2 жыл бұрын
Correct. Royal babies had wet nurses to feed them. This is (I think) to prevent the children from attaching strong bonds with their birth mothers. Also children from lower-ranking concubines were to be raised by higher-ranking concubines and after they reach certain age, the children will be sent to a sort of academy within the Palace where they would live and tutored there. Again, the purpose was so the children don't get too attached to their birth mothers.
@kakes1212 жыл бұрын
@@nekonette Why do you think that is? I know that filial piety is important is Chinese culture, so wouldn’t them being close to their mothers be the best?
@nekonette2 жыл бұрын
@@kakes121 It is true that filial piety is very important in Confucian societies, the royal children can still perform their obligations to their biological mothers but not to the point of placing them over certain things. In the imperial family, social hierarchy is also very important, the Emperor and Empress are considered the legal parents of all the royal children regardless of who their birth mothers were. So they take precedence when it comes to children showing their filial piety. Again this is just what I gather from watching and reading here and there, another reason is to prevent the mothers from taking advantage of their children's special positions one day. The sons will grow up to be Emperor/Dukes/High rank officials and their mothers use their close relationship to take advantage to gain favour/special dispensations/etc for herself or her clan. This can potentially destabilise the power balance in the court and nation. Take Consort Jia, for example. In the novel, her motive to push her children to the throne was to help her clan to break free from Qing control. She was hoping one of her sons will become the Emperor so she can use that position to release the Jin clan/Joseon from being vassal state to Qing China which will make her first love happy.

I wondered what would change if the Emperor added a law that states any childs death from birth to (whenever they marry) will result in the death of all that took care of the child and the birth mother of the child. Would that have stopped the needless death?
@ingridmeister5597 Жыл бұрын
Well, it wouldn't have come out in a nice way since not evil hearted concubines have also lost their babies due to either natural facts or someone else's scheming🤔 SPOILER ALERT For example, Jingse (5th princess, Ruyi's daughter) died because of Wei Yanwan giving them clothes to Ruyi's son (12th prince) and siblings getting them switched. Well, the clothes aimed to the prince had a smell that drove Jia's dog crazy, go towards Jingse, startle her and make her collapse. Not only did Ruyi suffer given the death of her daughter but also had a miscarriage. Hence, we cannot forget Consort Shu and her deceased son. She truly loved the Emperor and never held mean intentions towards the other concubines. Plus, she was longing to be a mother. What I mean is that a situation like that should be studied to find whether it is a culprit or it is due to a natural situation so once everything is crystal clear, the scheming ones should be sentenced to death🤔
@Yoruichi_16 Жыл бұрын
That would motivate the schemers more to do it. A wicked consort with a strong family background would see it as an oportunity to raise to the empress seat and get the crown prince position for her son.
