He’s complex, well read, kind and full of crazy stories, while being incredibly devious, one step ahead and totally ambiguous about whether he’s an evil , sociopathic mastermind, or a loving father with a deeply subtle awareness of ethics, who is just immersed in a spy vs spy world where the craziest decisions are necessary and unavoidable.

Reddington is one of the greatest characters of all time and it’s only possible because of Spader’s portrayal. The show as whole though, leaves a lot to be desired. A few seasons in and it became glaringly obvious that there was no endgame or even an idea of how to end things. A tight 5-6 seasons with a clear, plausible explanation for who red is and a neatly wrapped up version for how his story ends (or doesn’t), could have made this show one of the greatest of all time. Instead we got loops of contrived identities, pointless shadow organizations/enemies, and one of the most frustrating characters of all time in Liz.

Yeah, I stopped watching after 5 seasons. It was pretty good in 1-3, at season 4 I was suspecting the writers had no idea where they were going, after season 5 it was just a soap opera with variations on the same plot repeating over and over.
