So I made this today and noted on a few things: - The thickness of the dough for the treacle tart and pasties are not stated. I rolled it out to almost 1/2 inch thickness and it was too thick. I'd recommend rolling it out to a 1/4 inch. - It is not stated how the tart should look after being blind baked. I'd recommend baking for the 15 minutes, removing the weights and foil, and continuing to bake until the dough no longer looks raw (darker spots). This took me about a half-hour, overall. - The written recipe does not tell you to take the treacle filling off the heat before adding the eggs. Make sure you reference both the recipe and video, as I've noticed inconsistencies between the two for KZbin chefs. Will edit when the tart is done baking. Edit: it tasted amazing. Then though the pastry was a little bit thick, it didn't take away from how good it was. It was still crunchy when warmed in the microwave! Delicious.

Emma Gardner yeah, but when Harry hears that Winky has become addicted to it, his response is "well, it's not strong, that stuff" not "well, it's not alcoholic", suggesting that it does have some alcohol content. I'm guessing that the wizarding world has some different laws about when you can buy alcohol (I mean, they become adults at 17, so they'd be able to buy it then whatever happened, even though muggles have to wait another year). Ron gets excited about the possibility of being served Firewhisky at the Hog's Head, suggesting that that isn't legal, but maybe it's okay if it's below a certain percentage.

@jasonschuler22565 жыл бұрын
@@emmagardner7429 I thought it was heavily implied that it is slightly alcoholic. In book six, at Slughorn's party, Harry wonders what Ron and Hermione might do "under the influence of butterbeer." Also, if I remember correctly Hermione acts tipsy after drinking butterbeer just before they witness Katie Bell touching the cursed necklace. And I don't quite understand and you can say "a house elf drinks it and displays characteristics of being drunk" and then assert that it's not alcoholic. That seems like a pretty clear indication that it's alcoholic to me.....

*WOW*doge meme: _"The reason why babish did it like this is that American pumpkins are not good at savory flavours so it would be bad if it was made right"_ *All pumpkins* originated in the Americas & I would guess that every variety of pumpkin is grown in America. It is true that some pumpkins are better for savory dishes, while other pumpkins are better for sweet dishes, and some pumpkins are grown for decorative/recreational purposes, such as fall centerpieces and carving Jack-O-Lanterns. *People in the US do eat pumpkins (and other winter squash) in savory dishes.* It's just far more popular in pumpkin pie & other desserts, and most people in the US & Canada consider pumpkin pie an essential part of Thanksgiving dinner--making it an iconic dish.

Coming from the UK, A pumpkin pasty would have been savoury. So a cornish pasty that has meat and some veg. in it, the meat would be replaced with "chipped" pumpkin. So would have have gone in raw and cooked in the pastry. Cornish pasty has been know to have half meat and half dessert, but that would have been something like Apple and/or berries. LOVING the treacle pudding!!!

Everyone breathe...its most likely because he has clearly been to Harry Potter world at Universal, and the pumpkin pasties they have there are sweet, and since they are backed by JK Rowling and Warner Bros, he probably assumed that’s the way she meant them to be in the book. I️ mean, they have chocolate frogs that leap out of their boxes... I’m sure there are things more shocking and controversial than a pasty that is sweet. Oh & great job, congrats on your book, thanks for doing a Harry Potter episode!

@PassTheMarmalade19577 жыл бұрын
There is such a thing as dessert pasties, and they're not some fancy modern interpretation either. Traditional Cornish pasties were like a compact two-course dinner for Cornish miners. The thick pastry edge on the outside was like a handle so the miners could hold the pasty with their dirty hands, then throw the edge away. The filling was half savoury, half sweet. One side would be like beef and onion, the other apple and custard.
@Mach1Greeble7 жыл бұрын
Throw the edge away? You heretic. No coal miner with his salt throws away away pastie crust.

If you like treacle tart, I wonder how you would like caramel apple pies. They're a popular dessert in Quebec (I'm not sure about the rest of Canada) and I'm honestly not sure why they haven't become popular in the states. It's like a delicious apple pie had a baby with a traditional smooth sugar pie. So good!

Treacle Tart is a gift from gods. When I was in primary school the cooks would make a huge batch of mini individual tarts every friday for after lunch. We were allowed 2 because they were tiny and you could pick between treacle, jam or lemon curd and I always picked the treacle tarts (although lemon curd tarts are great too).

Maybe it's just years of conditioning from Cornish friends, but to me that isn't a pasty. To be more pasty authentic, I'd be thinking a savoury filling of cubed (not minced) beef, diced pumpkin, onion and maybe a little potato.
@ZanHecht7 жыл бұрын
keios But that's not a pumpkin pasty, is it? That said, I could imagine a more savory version with pumpkin puree, sage, salt, pepper, onions, ground maple sausage and, if you're feeling adventurous, a little goat cheese.

for a non-alchoholic butterbeer you can use the recipe i made for my sister's birthday! -vanilla or butter pecan ice cream, blend with milk and butterscotch flavour then freeze again -half fill glass with ice cream -pour vanilla cream soda over it -add a generous amount of (ideally homemeade) whipped cream and butterscotch sauce -add butterscotch peices and caramel candies -done!

Pasties were invented by tin miners to have a convenient food to take into the mine, the crust is held and then thrown down the shaft after the rest is eaten Personally why I thing that tiny pasties are not acceptable ( sarcasm ) It would be really cool if babish could make a real Cornish pasty...
@MsKathleenb4 жыл бұрын
Interestingly, a mine in Mexico ordered a bunch of Cornish equipment in... the late 19th century (?). The company sent a bunch of miners to teach the Mexicans how to use the equipment. Naturally, the Cornish miners brought their pasties, and the Mexican workers started making their own versions with local ingredients. These are called pastes (im sure there should be an accent mark somewhere in there somewhere). Now the descendants of the Cornish and Mexican miners get together every few years and share their respective pastries. It's a very cool story.

I've read the books several times and don't recall butterbeer being described with any alcohol. I was always under the impression is was more a soft drink like root beer. Interesting.
@ViennaVampire5 жыл бұрын
It has to have some small amount of alcohol. Winky gets drunk on butterbeer in book 4, with Hermione stating (paraphrased): "Buttebeer is not very strong." and Dobby replying: "It is for house elves, Miss."

Nor is that surprising. House elves are a great deal smaller than most humans.

I thought butter beer was a warm drink as well. I remember reading that it warmed him up after being in the cold.
@evansatatkd5 жыл бұрын
Not to mention that just before Katie touches the necklace, Hermione has just basically guzzled an entire mug of butterbeer, and is more than just a little tipsy on their walk to see Katie flying into the air. She sobers up quickly enough, but she was feeling kinda happy there for a bit. Obviously happy enough to have apparently forgotten why she guzzled the butterbeer to begin with.

That pie looked amazing! As a person who doesn't really like pie, it's usually because there is too much filling so seeing a pie that is basically a giant tart is nice.
@ladybuggger3 жыл бұрын
One small change, don't trim the tart crust flush to the pan before baking or you get the shrinkage you see in the video. Leave like an inch of overhang and then trim it with a serrated knife right after blind baking
