Great job man. UV does breakdown plastic for sure but there is a few very cheap solutions. You need to use fibre glass to seal the top. Then spray with uv proof paint. Then cover with black uv resistant plastic. Have you tried putting a electric blanket around the IBC (which uses very little energy) and then spray foam insulating the tank and of course keeping in an insulated green house. I can make a home made green house using clear plastic sheeting for £300 in the uk using recycled timber. You might need to have a slow speed electric motor stirrer on the top set on a timer to run for 5 minutes 4 times a day job done. It’s great to see you so passionate about this though and gas is so expensive. Thanks for your tips. It really helps the rest to avoid costly mistakes.

A way to deal with clogging would be to install a filter at the mouth and insert a hand driven rotor right beside the pipe with connected rudders that move beneath the intake. From time to time you run it to clear stuffs cumulated under the pipe to let gas pass

Yes it's not Pressurized. Plus I can always move the storage bag anywhere I want. The new biogas digester I bought from www.thebiogasstore.com/ has a built-in storage so most people won't need a big bag but I wanted to make sure I have endless gas plus this bag when be used to fill other bags for my rental house I'm getting ready to build soon.

There is an easy fix for cracks in any type of plastic from IBC totes to plastic gas tanks. Use a wood burner (arts and crafts wood burner) and get some of the same material as the plastic you are fixing, w/the wood burner melt a V straight through the crack w/o melting through the material your working with. Then take a strip of an old IBC (in this case) you cut out and start melting and blending in the new material then smooth it out using the smooth side of the wood burner. Hope this helps!

Tap the bag with a tee in the line. Use the bag kinda like a buffer. Connect the tee into an air compressor and feed into a LP cylinder. If you know how much gas is getting made, you could even put the air pump on a timer and cycle it daily. Be careful with that though don't want to suck the liquid up. Don't really think having it in a non enclosed system causing problems is a downside. It should be enclosed in a shed with ok airflow and a dedicated (sealed) heater fed by biogas it generates. If you want a heating element capture sun energy with some black water tanks. Use a hand pump or 12v pump to feed it around the digester or inside.

Hello you should replace the 2 90's on the top of the bio digester with t unions with threaded caps. That should reduce the labor for the clean out slightly.

I would place the empty tank on a metal base with insulating foam on top, then wrap chicken wire around the tank and encase it with cement mixture (Ferro cement). It would fit like a glove around fittings which would remain unimpeded. I would make a lid made of Ferro cement material, then paint it black. It will solve UV breakdown of the plastic. Consider electric stirrer as suggested elsewhere. You can place wooden upright planks at different height to make a sturdy step up, bit like mountain climbing with your footing, a lot of fun. It may alleviate the biofilm issue.

if you cover it with a black tarp then it will still absorb the sun's heat and lose less at night. Seems cheap and easy. Have you been logging the temperature? Also it seems like you could go with more efficient appliances like an induction cooktop and heat pump water heater to run off of your existing pv system instead of dealing with the digester.

Two words: waste management. It's arguably one of the biggest challenges in a self-sufficient lifestyle, especially if you seek to be both economical and environmentally-friendly. Both aforementioned appliances are fine, but use electricity where there exist alternatives. By reducing reliance on electricity, it becomes less of a neccessity and more of a luxury. I will grant you that people have been cooking and heating water with wood fires for literal millenia, sure. However, we now get back to the heart of the issue: waste management. You can turn trash into something of value. Plus, methane burns cleaner. When investing, you diversify. It's no different when it comes to energy use. Just solar comes with risk and very slow return. Solar, wind, and biogas at the same time though? Banking.

a tent will.protect the top and keep it warm in the night and day and wintertime. try give it a bit of shade . a small roof or plastic tent. any customised plastic cover will give enough external protection, the green stuff needs to be mixed with a mixer, less material, and water no need clogging. the gas pillow can serve as a protection cover against the sun if it is placed on top of tank.

Are you afraid of the bio bag being so close to your beautiful home???? I think this is Soo cool because I have most of the parts sitting around to build this so I'm stoked. Hey my friend if you know anyone that builds/ repairs homes you could get the old sliding doors and make a green house and use plastisc as a hoop roof . You can build this super cheap and it will look awesome. I always look for stuff folks are throwing away . I was shy in the beginning to ask people if I could have the stuff they were gonna throw away but now I don't care what they think!!! All they can do is say NO it's going to the landfill and nobody has ever said no they usually ask me what I'm working on lol also I get sooooo much brand new siding from big companies that build houses they said they rather give me leftovers then store it , & saves them dumpster room. I have built a 9 foot x 12ft lean 2 and only purchased 2. 2x4's also my chicken coop and rabbit hutches free they look nice also . So I'm sure you would build some serious bad ass stuff lol your smart. Have a blessed day my friend.

I might be dumb with this question.. Your water tank is getting cracked by the sun and you are struggling to keep it warm enough. You said that a green house is to expensive.. But I can see there is an old truck laying in your field. Why don't you fit the tank inside the truck?it will be protected from direct sun and for sure will reach good temperatures. And it's there for free. I'm sure the tank in the truck system would last more than your new "thebiogasstore" thing.

Yeah, there are lots of solutions here that wouldn't be very difficult and cost Way less than $2,400... His whole set-up could be better, but even working with the current one, which isn't bad, he could simply buy some plexiglass/acrylic and some 1" angle aluminum strips and build a little green house really easily and cheaply. Then just put a tarp hanging above the tank to block direct sun, but high enough that it's still easy to feed the tank. I'd actually even put the feeding tube angled to the side to make it easier to feed. I'm not hating. There's nothing wrong with simply buying a "plug and play" system. Just saying, for those who have a tighter budget, you can build a perfectly good system and use it without having to spend $2,400 on a pre-made system.

I looked at the website and agree with you about the unit they sell. I think the whole industry is going to take off in the states like solar has. I work off site, away from my homestead. The solar electric is working great. I guess my concern with the bio gas is, can it be neglected for a few days in a row while I'm away or does it require daily maintenance?
@ModernOffGridDIY
@ModernOffGridDIY 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your support, I agree the biogas digester www.thebiogasstore sales is the best way to go. To answer your question you don't have to feed it or do any maintenance daily. I some times don't feed main for 4 or 5 days. But of course the production will be less once you start feeding it again it will start making a lot of gas. The system is every Forgiving. Just feed it good before the days you won't be around so it's making gas when your not home then just start feeding it again when you do get home. If I feed it everyday I get a lot of gas everyday. My whole house is on biogas. I'm really excited about my new biogas digester that's coming in it will fix and solve all the problems I had with my old homemade unit. Plus the new biogas digester looks nice compared to my homemade unit lol.

your cons are valid for the DIY, but the design of that diy looks similar to the solar city design which could have clogging issues. because of the layering in digester if you had a "overflow pipe" that comes out the side of the tank at the middle, with a pipe and a T that goes to maybe 4-5 inches away from the top it will act as a overflow and prevent all that biomass from clogging and leave a gas buffer zone. IMHO the fill should be setup in a similar matter, but with a sweeping 90 at the bottom of the tank with a fill pipe that goes up level with the top of the tank.

Nice system but there are a couple of errors with the system that is why the film is blocking off the gas, the tank is cracking/ leaking, but nice work it's all part of learning.

The outlet is too high, that's why in the inlet pipe you reach the same high level.

With a lower level, the gas bubbles will always get collect in the gas space in the upper part of the tank and u won't have liquid leakings you showed on the top, however possibly gas leaks.

You don't need to build a greenhouse or buy a biodigester from the Biogas store. Just wrap the IBC with Saran wrap and that will create a green house effect on the ICBC for a couple of dollars. If you buy the plastic Saran wrap at the 99 cents store or dollar store, it will probably be even cheaper.

Won't work like that the wind will cool down the tank, plus ibc tank not good for biogas digester.
@somebody6048
@somebody6048 5 жыл бұрын
@@ModernOffGridDIY That is what the Saran wrap is for. It protect the tank from the wind and environment. I have seen a video where they made a green house by wrapping the frame with Saran wrap, instead of glass. So I don't see why it would not work here if it works for a green house. The IBC frame that hold the container is equivalent to the frame of a green house.

I don’t know is it going to be very safe having a large flammable gas tank inside your house that’s just in a bag. The closest thing that I’ve seen to that is having a large oil tank in a house. Which I believe fuel oil is a lot less flammable.

Don`t put it under you`re house it could be dangerous if it explodes. Put in a out side shed or bury it in the ground several feet where the temp is constent, still easy to get to when needed.

that's what I was wondering as well. I have MS so one of my twins and I were thinking of selling the big house and getting a couple of tinies and attach with a porch or greenhouse patio between the two and a garage off the back for my wheelchair lift/ accessible vehicle and game/ rec area. But was looking at options that don't require septic but could still use bidet, toilet cloths like we did when stationed in Germany. Putting this semi under the porch (which would cover a concrete or some sort of storm shelter)

So you build an insulated box around it stops sun degradation at this point for this tank its to late so if you have the money it's far easier and designed for optimal performance the thing is a home built unit can get you off the grid if you pay even 20 $ per month it only has to last a year or two and be put up for that long before you can buy a good factory built one as for don't build just buy that's great if you have a good cash flow or credit if you are low income especially seniors they are low income and can't get credit I'm looking at going solar and cutting the grid both power and gas but I've got both problems I'm a senior on low income keeping the ability to return to the grid when it time to sell is reasonable 5$ to keep the electric hooked up will still save me over 220 $per month and for gas it's 30 $$per month but unlike the power I'll still have a meter so I can use the gas company for an emergency gas supply when I convert my furnace it'll be able to run on either methane or natural gas for the stove I'll only have 2 burners able to use both that way if methane gas production slows I can still have heat and can still cook

Hey me again so I successfully made biogas but after about two months it ran dry and I really don't know how to get it working again My theories are 1The water I used was treated with alkaline chemicals 2 I wasn't constantly feeding my tank 3 I used a bit of kitchen and dog waste 4 a drop in temperature recently I'm really sad and worried so much investment If I can get a reply that would be great Also I considered the whole Ph,air and ammonia factor but I couldn't really detect anything I'm really sad

Heya. So using tap water is no good because the water treatment chemicals kill your bacteria. This is easily avoided by collecting rainwater, which he mentions in the video. Daily feeding of the digester is ideal, but keep in mind they're quite versatile; grass for example is excellent. Use kitchen waste with caution: meat for example should be used extremely sparingly if at all, however as a general rule fruits and veggies are a good addition. Breaking everything up before introduction is always helpful. Dog waste is a fine addition, although other types of animal waste would result in more efficient production of methane, for example cow manure, horse manure, or rabbit droppings. As for #4 I'm not sure if low temperatures actually kill the bacteria or simply put them on pause, sorry. Hope this helps a bit.
