Yeah, the only fictional Dracula I can think of that rivals/beats out the craziness of Vlad's actual life is Alucard from Hellsing. But that's anime&manga, and they have less restrictions when it comes to getting fucked up stories. I definitely want to see a live-action movie about Vlad, and I would enjoy the hell out of it as long it stays true and is executed properly
@thestatistician60764 жыл бұрын
@James Stewart nope but he promised to become a vassal of Mathias Corven only to raid his lands in transylvania a few years later, and breaking his oath to him and returning to the ottomans, before turning gaianst them, which made the Sultan get rid of him for good, this is why he is considered a coward, because of his greed and blind desire to rule independently at the expense of his ruler (mathias and the ottomans) and at the cost of thousands of chiristians he murdered due to his need for money or insanity. This is europe hates him.

He's seen as a martyr and hero for his actions to keep Romania today as it is and not turn it into a Islamic nation and losing its identity. But again just a matter of perspective for many on how they see him. Read his autobiography, it gives a good summary about him and the author took over a decade to write it. Worth it if you're interested.

Yeah, but not doing anything because of the threat of impalement isn't moral behavior, it's survival in constant fear. Going over the top with punishment will not produce ethical societies - moral people will act accordingly out of their own motivations, not death threats. I'm quite surprised how readily impalement is defended in this comment section. "Hey at least no purses were stolen" seems like a comical defense to me.
@lweaver29886 жыл бұрын
alpenjon its ethical by result regardless. you cant force good morals in any instance, but the threat of gruesome death ensued that regardless of morality, the local population would act as good Christians.
@alpenjon6 жыл бұрын
The key is the word "act". If the only motivator is punishment, people will circumvent it, and it will breed crime like black markets and corruption. Also, think about all the false accusations and impalements that inevitably result from such a law. All it takes is a few false accusers, one corrupt judge or a simple mistake and you've impaled an innocent citizen. And when impalement is at stake, people would do anything to motivate or pressure judges.

Some context as to why he's seen as a hero: in a country where corruption has been a problem for centuries he's seen as a figure of draconian justice. It's said that in his time you could drop a bag o money on the ground and still find it there the next day. So in Romania you'll hear him brought up a lot whenever there's a corruption scandal, or even when there's a petty crime, like someone being pickpocketed. I'd say Stephen the Great is the Romanian historical figure more closely associated with the fight against the Ottoman Empire, especially in the context of Christianity vs. Islam (fought the Ottomans and built lots of churches)

It’s a shame people remember him as just some evil maniac. In reality, Vlad played an integral part in resisting westward Ottoman expansion and was a hero to the Christian world. He was also a master of psychological warfare, destroying innumerable amounts of Ottoman forces and using “impairment” to make the Ottomans shot themselves. I’m not saying he wasn’t an exceedingly violent man, but the medieval era was an exceedingly violent time, and Vlad proved more than happy to adapt to the world he lived in. He certainly commands respect.

Dustin Cooper well, in this time period, the mainstream church would of given anyone who inconvenience the Ottomans the steamiest homosexual actions if they asked (ok, not really, but you get my point). Anyway, when the Ottomans became powerful, most of the high ranking members of the church basically loved anyone who could help them stop the Ottomans and keep their political power, did not matter what they did, even if it was the most brutal and sinful action.

He kinda glossed over it, but from the outset of his first campaign vlad had every impaled person sent back to his capital in full view of his castle. He got into that habit because the ottomans had made sure to give him a cell facing their execution square when he was just a boy. It may be apocryphal but some say vlad was waiting for them in the forest of the dead when the army crested the pass into his capital. It is rumored he called up to them,"look at what i have made of your men! More a forest than they ever were soldiers; useful only for providing me shade and joy!" The sultans men needed to be convinced to advance down that hill. Vlad roared with laughter every time the sultan executed another of his own men for cowardice and heckled them mercilessly. Whats really crazy is it very nearly did the trick and the army nearly broke. The sultan had to promise riches and titles AND keep up executions just to get his army moving DOWN a hill. Just crazy

At the beginning of his ruling he pardoned and freed all the people from the prisons, under the condition that they would leave their wrong ways and become good citizens, but of course not many did that so he did what he had already told that he would do. He's almost like a brutal version of Cesare Borgia in that he could lead, rule and fight, but instead of fucking his own sister, Vlad would rather stick sharp prods up 50,000 ppl's asses, which is pretty brutal, but also pretty badass, like impaling your enemy on a stick level of badass.

Vlad was, is and always will be a Hero ! Moreover, he should be a hero for the entire Europe and I pledge my arguments bellow. Let's start with his cruelty. His biggest major cruelties were: On a campaign vs the Ottoman Empire he killed tens of thousands, allegelly civilians too. There are his personal letters sent to Matthias Corvinus in which “3000 were killed there, 5000 there, etc". He clearly specified “not a single Christian was harmed". Impaling thousands. The impaling was first used by Danes vikings in 9th to 10th century and at a large scale. It has been used all over Europe since than. When Mehmed conquered Constantinopole in 1453, he impaled 100,000 Christians over the walls of the captured city. Vlad used impaling mainly to scare the turks by using their own style of punishment. Vlad took impaling from the turks and used it against them. Vlad's impaling are mentioned 3 times: Once against the city-state of Brasov who refused to pay Its taxes and sheltered opponents of Vlad to the throne. Another time over threacherous boyars who murdered Vlad’s brother (Mircea II was tortured and his eyes taken and burried alive,digging his own grave in 1448) while Vlad's father was decapited by the same boyars. In exchange, as a revenge Vlad took all the treacherous boyars together with their entire families and forced them to build the Poenari Castle until they all died of exhaustion. Some 40-50000 ottoman soldiers were impaled during the Ottoman invasion of Wallachia in 1461. It was an aggresion against Vlad who fought back and defended his country using a psychological war of fear, starvation and night attacks over the imvading army 10 times bigger. The ottomans brought 200-300000 soldiers while Vlad had 20-30000 at most. Eventually after 4 months,the conquerer of Constantinopole and his undefeated army was crushed by Vlad in a blitz attack during the night of 21st of june 1461. Mehmed lost almost 3 quarters of his army and returned to Constantinopole defeated. The Knights of Malta sang Te Deum in the name of Vlad and proclaimed him Champion of Christ. The Pope itself was so excited that he called for a crusade. Before Vlad the Ottomans were considered undefeated. Only Matthias Corvinus betrayed him after this major success. Right after Vlad defeated Mehmed, the Pope sent 100, 000 florins and called for a massive Crusader amongst alm Christians. The Hungarians and Germans envied Vlad success and they took the money for the crusade and arrested Vlad on claims that he betrayed Christianity and made a secret peace with the Turks. It was just a fabricated lie to justify the 100k florins they took and never returned. Vlad was jailed by Matthias Corvinus until 1474 when the Pope insisted to be released because nobody could have fought Mehmed meanwhile,except Vlad’s cousin Stephan. The Pope called for a crusade again with Vlad the leader, but first he was sent to eliberate Bosnia from ottomans- which he did. When returned to Wallachia he was swiftly assasinated and his brave but troubled life ended there. His father was killed by betrayal. His brother tortured and burried alive by betrayal. His only love, a normal woman (not a princess) was killed by betrayal. Everybody betrayed him and he fought alone all his battles without a single loss. Eventually he was killed by betrayal. And he is killed again by lies and defaimation, today. Nobody could have stopped Mehmed back then. Without Vlad III Basarab (aka The Impaler) the entire Europe would have been conquerer by Ottomans… or ar least Viena like it was conquered 200 years later. Vlad first reign was 1456-1461. During this period he reinforced the small army by turning it into professionals full time. Economically he made lots of changes to favor the large mass of peasantry workers. He consolidated Wallachia in relations with city states like Brasov. Naturally he developed enemies everywhere: in his council (thats how he died, by treason and murder), amongst ottomans, amongst germans and hungarians. The use of printing press which was just released in 1460 by germans,had a major contribution in the defaimation of Vlad. Amongst the first mass prints were pamflets with the bloody gore murdereous Dracula. Like the Tudors, the Pope or any other ruling dynasty across Europe, those who opposed the ruler or who tried a coupe d'etat would face death. The punishment was swift and tortureous against any who opposed the king. Everwhere. Vlads satanization and brutal image was hasten by Hungarians and Germans who were envious on his bravery and success. Vlad was a proud knight of Malta Order of Joanites. As well as a proud knight of Ordo Draco (order of the Dragons). He never drink blood of his enemies. Or eat their flesh. Or took pleasure into torturing them no more than Mehmed or Henry Vi or any other medieval ruler. He never betrayed and always kept his oath. Yes, he was and still is a hero. Even for the Malta Order of Knights. Any other ignorant who do not research the history of Vlad and chose to believe bedtime horror stories, well.. He is free to believe what he wants. The Turks called him “Oglu Kazikli “ which means the Impaler Devil Prince. Chalcocondil claims that turkish mothers used to scare their childrens with the coming of Oglu Kazikli. Thats how strong he got into their minds.

@@mrktechgiant3058 His father never named him "the devil". He inherited a religious group title from his father, "The Order of the Dragon". The word evolved as Dragon / Dracon/ Drac / Dracul / Dracula, in this order. Those words had very close sounding for romanian common folks at the time. Best part about Vlad is the set of legends. One says that a well in Wallachia had upon it a golden cup, set with no chain for nobody would dare to steal it. The very day he died it is told that the cup had vanished, and then did the peasants know that Vlad was no more. Another tells of a merchant who reported that his bag of a hundred silver coins was stolen, and Vlad told him to wait. The next day he was called over to be shown his bag, and the merchant gleefully thanked for his bag being found. But then Vlad counted the money in the bag in front of the merchant, ten stacks of ten and then one more, since the bag was never the merchant's to begin with. And having been caught a liar, he was also impaled.

Dude was a strategic genius, When his scouts reported that the enemy armies were coming, and he calculated that his people would not be able to withstand the invasion he selected a portion of his own people, deemed them as "acceptable loses", and ordered them to be impaled alive and have the stakes arranged along the road to the city, meaning the invaders were obliged to witness the depths of his mercilessness, even to his own, in order to psychologically disturb the invaders of his lands and force them to turn back out of terror.
