One thing regarding the "Night Attack" on the Ottoman camp which is not mentioned here... Vlad dressed up all his Wallachian soldiers in Turkish gear and (he) speaking fluent Turkish they could get past the guards (like it was the case in Giurgiu mentioned in this vid) when most of the Ottoman troops were asleep. Once they got in and started the attack, he and some of his generals (who had a few lessons of that language) shouted orders in Turkish so the awakened Ottoman soldiers were so confused not knowing what is going on, that they even started killing each other.

Unfortunately it isn’t mentioned in this video. It is true that Vlad entered the Ottoman camp in the night during Mehmed II’ crusade towards Targoviste to punish Vlad. Then you should also know that Vlad try to enter the Sultans tent to kill him, but failed, because he entered the wrong tent. That was also the reason why he lost during that attack, eventually left Wallachia to seize refuge in Hungary and lost Wallachia to the Ottoman Empire.
@aligungor6402 жыл бұрын
@CipiRipi00 And at this point, our sources differ. According to the Turkish sources, after the camp attack, Vlad returned to Targoviste and escaped Wallachia to seize refuge in Hungary, partly because of the reason you mentioned. While in Hungary, he wrote a letter to Mehmed to plead his forgiveness and to tell Mehmed that he knows Transilvania which he can help capture alongside Mehmed. But unfortunately for Vlad, the letter was captured by the Hungarians and they put Vlad in captivity for 17 years. So the letter never reached Mehmed. Meanwhile, Mehmed marched towards Targoviste. He was shocked of what he saw, but also his army of Janissaries. They saw a 5 km long carnage. Bodies of various people, especially Turks, impaled along the way. This made Mehmed very sad and traumatised the army. He entered Targoviste and made Radu the new voivode of Wallachia. Because of the loyalty of Radu the Handsome, he didn’t conquer Wallachia. Instead made a vassal state of the Ottoman Empire. In this time Mehmed could focus on conquering other countries or face rebellions (for example Skenderbeg). After 17 years Vlad was released from prison to take Wallachia back from his brother, but Mehmed was already informed by Radu. He sent his Akinji forces to kill Vlad, which they eventually did. They beheaded Vlad and sent it to Constantinople.

There was never a walachian/ottoman rivalry. Walachia an Moldavia were small countries that wanted independence and the Otomans were an empire with dreams of global domination. And they had the might for it. Their major downside was promoting the most loyal generals not the most competent. Their rivalry was with the Russians and other Western empires. Rivalry means they were after the same thing, and Walachia, Moldavia or Transilvania were never after world domination or expansion as an empire. The three countries might have been a thorn in the side of the ottomans, but they were vassals to the Ottomans more often than naught.
@novaimperialis4 жыл бұрын
Don't forget that his actions were part of a strategy. Not necessarily because of his personal morals, which the church condemned such aggression. He wanted to scare the turks and his opposition so they would not intervene anymore in the state affairs. That's Wallachia medieval strategy in a nutshell. As a small country how can you became respected if not by scaring your adversaries? There is a nice stoic quote: when you are weak be strong. When you are strong be weak. That's humility. Humility is not being a fool who gets beat up. Humility is dignity. You became gentle because you can crush your adversary but you don't. Exactly like King David did to Saul. Untill you defeat someone in battle, he will not be your friend. Only by seeing that you are on the same footing as him, will he gain respect towards you. That's why enemies are your friend and your friends are potential enemies(like the boyars). Wallachia was considered weak by the big powers and a portion of the pie that they could take with no resistance. Vlad showed them that a small country, when united in goal and purpose, can defeat even an entire empire. I'm not advocating for violance here. But this need to be superior is embedded in human nature and the only way to deal with it is to recognize it, and then transcend it. If you don't recognize it, then it will crush you and others. We are not good. Inherently we are, but that goodness needs to first defeat that tyrant that is in power, in our hearts. Then we will start to became trully good. Untill then we are like a diamond covered in mud. The diamond still shines, but you can't see it because of the mud.

@@GenghisKal, the stories are not exaggerated. There would have been no Europe without Vlad. This short documentary ignores his massive contribution in 1475 at the Battle of Vaslui. After the fall of Constantinople, Mehmed wanted to conquer the whole Christianity. Moldavia was next on his agenda after Laoita was put in the Vallachia. He gathered an army of 160.000, 120 stindards, against 40.000 moldavians and rebels (including Vlad). It was the bloodiest battle of the Middle Ages. Mehmed failed big time.In 1400 Moldavia was inhabited by 150.000-200.000 people 2 out of 10 people living in the country died in that battle, corresponding to a death rate 800x times higher than in other wars at the time. The Ottoman casualties (by their own records) were counted as 45,000, including four Pashas killed and a hundred standards taken. Jan Długosz writes that "all but the most eminent of the Turkish prisoners are impaled", and their corpses burned. According to the Polish chronicler Jan Długosz, Stephen did not celebrate his victory; instead, he fasted for forty days on bread and water and forbade anyone to attribute the victory to him, insisting that credit be given only to "The Lord". www.quora.com/What-was-the-bloodiest-battle-and-bloodiest-war-in-the-Middle-Ages/answer/Radu-M-Oleniuc

The word "Dracula" was a German misspelling of the word "Draculea", which is the correct spelling of the word meaning "son of the Dragon".
@brianbatie66504 жыл бұрын
@artnexus 8 Exactly. It was the Saxons (early Germans) who misspelled the name "Draculea" when they distributed false anti Vlad propaganda accusing him of being in league with the Devil. ( Societas Draconistarum, "Order of the Dragon" was a monarchical chivalric order for selected higher nobility and monarchs, founded in 1408 by Sigismund of Luxembourg, who was then King of Hungary (r. 1387-1437) and later became Holy Roman Emperor (r. 1433-1437). It was fashioned after the military orders of the Crusades, requiring its initiates to defend the cross and fight the enemies of Christianity, particularly the Ottoman Empire. I doubt that the name "Dracul" meant "Devil" when it was given by the church to Vlad's Father. Woodcarvings depicting Vlad Tepes as eating the flesh and drinking the blood of impaled victims were made by Saxon propagandists who wanted him overthrown for his actions against their rich trade partners, the Boyars. The term Draco is indeed Romantic Latin for "dragon". Early astronomers named the constellation Draco because it resembled a dragon. Certain animals have Latin genus names like Draco Volans which means "flying dragon". A flower, Dracomonticola (Orchidaceae) means dragon-mountain-dweller. Perhaps the Romanians who sided with the elite class against Vlad allowed the regional colloquial dialect to become "devil" over time, in which case you are not wrong, but that is not the case in the rest of the world. "Draco" and "dracul" still mean "dragon".
@brianbatie66504 жыл бұрын
@artnexus 8 I would think that the King of Hungary and the Holy Roman Emperor, having knowledge of the languages of the region, would not give members of a group fighting on behalf of Christianity the name "the Order of the Devil". But, as I said, the regional evolution of local languages may well have evolved the name to mean "devil" in which case, as I said, you would not be wrong, but to say that the name means "devil" in romantic Latin is indeed incorrect.
@brianbatie66504 жыл бұрын
@artnexus 8 "Diavol" or "Diavolul" are not Romanian?
@brianbatie66504 жыл бұрын
@artnexus 8 I thought "streiga' or 'striga' was the word for demon or evil spirit. However, I understand how a word can evolve with time, there was a time when the word "gay" meant "happy", but pretty much no one uses it as "happy" anymore. As far as "pissing you off", that is another phrase that has changed meanings over time, pissing used to mean "urinate". At any rate, it is not my goal to "piss you off", nor do I care if you are. If you cannot exchange info without becoming "pissed off", that is your problem, not mine.
@brianbatie66504 жыл бұрын
@John Padowski Exactly my point. Vlad Tepes was a populist hero to many, if not most of his people, but the wealthy and corrupt betrayed him, and ultimately helped the Turks kill him. The only reason his name has come to mean something other than what it was, is that as you say, the winners rewrote the story. Thus the stories about his drinking the blood of his impaled enemies were created by his Saxons whose trade with his corrupt Boyar enemies was threatened. It was agitprop, designed to vilify him, and later those stories were further twisted to cast him as a vampire by the Irishman Bram Stoker even to the misspelling of his name.

I am Hungarian/American and have spent a good part of my life reading and studying the history of Dracula. The proper pronunciation of so many important names and places should have prompted better research from whomever put this video together. @KinG of SomethiNG People from 20 century have a lot more information, food, resources than people from 14 century. Killing, murder, crimes were commons for 14 century all across Europe. They were fighting with all means for their turf. It was a matter of live or die. It should not be the case today for civilized humanity when we live in complete different scenario. But the world can regress back anytime. See movie: The Book or Eli or The Road.

Did you forgot what Mongols, did, they killed millions and not for defending their own land, for looting and plunder. So please don't give me lessons about aggression for people that defend their land. Vlad was defending his turf and he was entitle to do whatever he likes to hold it. Small nations can use all meanings to survive against the big bullies' that try to anihilate, assimilate them. Amin.

@ibrahim bozkurt You said all in the first 1 & 2 point. That is your point of view. Aggression for your side is good taking over other nations but other should be snow white and should accept their fate. What is left to say is that you are and part of an Arian ethnicity that should control others.

@L2Xenta4 жыл бұрын
Btw ... Vlad's portrait is not an accurate representation of how he looked. This portrait is more of a caricature, that was done around 100 years after his reign ... by descendants of people that didnt really like him, probably from the western rich merchant guilds he put in their place. From the 1 description I know of that exists of him, he did have long black hair, a mustache , but his eyes were green and apparently he had a bulls neck, while not very tall (eventually normal height for his time), he appeared very strong (I think the describer says he appears to have strength of several men) and his gaze impressed the one describing him as well. Obviously not a thin zombie looking guy like the propaganda portrait. P.s. The ottomans didnt really know how he died... if they had any clue they would have made songs and poetry about it to sing their victory and praise allah ... thats how things were done. In my opinion he was simply betrayed as... his 11-12 years imprisonment had lost him his land already.
@oneman76384 жыл бұрын
Yup, correct. They claimed that the sultan's assassin had Vlad decapitated and brought his head encased in honey, to keep it fresh. However there is no historical authenticity to this claim, we know he was betrayed, we know he was murdered, and we know he died, but the exact circumstances, who murdered him, what exactly happened, still remains a mystery to history. I doubt the Ottomans got to him as they claim today. Because writings from that time tell us that they never found his body, other accounts claim they found his body and that his head was still firmly attached so... Probably the sultan had someone else killed to keep the public under control and save face, since the man basically destroyed the ottomans with a smaller army but obviously a bigger brain.
@oneman76384 жыл бұрын
@Ameretat010 maybe because it was the only thing he had left of him? So yeah, doesn't validate its authenticity.
@oneman76384 жыл бұрын
@Ameretat010 people didn't say it was a caricature. Rather they said it was not an accurate portrait of what he looked like. Especially when they found some writings which describe him as very muscular, somewhat tall, thick necked with a strong back, long flowing hair and piercing green eyes.
@oneman76384 жыл бұрын
@Ameretat010 well he does look pretty thin and sickly when in reality he was a healthy as a horse Voivode. I mean they didn't exactly paint that portrait of him in a beautiful fashion or to portray him at his best.

Vlad was the first victim of a new technology called the printing press. At that time it was just invented, so papers were beginning to be widespread, literacy was going up and he had a hit piece written about him as well as the book DRACULA by Stocker, which was absolute fiction. That is why the west see him as a monster and tyrant. That is what they heard. Romanians of today see him as a hero. They actually had ancestors living under his rule and the correct history (not propaganda) was transmitted by word of mouth. History is always written by the winning side, and, in this case, it was the Ottomans and the AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN empire. They present history from their perspective and in a light that favors them and their agenda. Everyone does. The world is just cruel like that.

Some notes: 1. Wallachia is a foreign name. Like ”Germany” for Deutschland. The real, internal name was ”Țara Românească” (literary meaning Romanian-land). 2. Moldova was also named ”MoldoVlahia”, being a Vlah (Romanian) country as well. Unfortunately, the two principalities were united only in 1859, thus establishing modern Romania. 3. John Hunyadi was also Romanian. Before reaching in power In Hungary, most Hungarian documents name him John the Olah (Olah = Wallahian = Romanian).

Very good documentary about this controversial historical figure, who is considered widely a national hero of Romania. Here is a lesser known but important information about Vlad & his army that speaks to the heritage of the Wallachians. The Byzantine Greek historian Laonikos Chalkokondyles wrote the following: "The (Ottoman) camp was, frankly, afraid of the Dacians who in no less boldness did a great deed." It's a very interesting historical source that affirms the Dacian ethnicity of the medieval ancestors of modern day Romanians.
@Dafterthought3 жыл бұрын
That really is a very interesting piece of info..the Dacian heritage of Romanians tends to be swept under the Roman rug. 👌
@abiesalba100 Жыл бұрын
It doesn't attest the Dacian ethnicity of Romanians back then. The "Byzantine Greeks" called themselves and identified at that time as "Romans". Romanians or Wallachiams also called themselves "români", but the byzantine chronicler wanted either to avoid confusion between Greeks/Romans and Wallachians/Romanians/Dacians or just to refer to the ancient Roman names in a nostalgic classicist manner, which happened often in the years of the Renaissance. The connection to "Dacia" or "Dacians" was long lost at that time.

Ottomans make his story as a terrifying monster and it was true - he was merciless for his enemies and made the sultan run away from his lands. Yet, we dont look too good and it is sad that nowadays we are living familiar times, as the boyars are keeping coruption at it's peak, but Vlad's blood, moving in our veins, will give birth to another ruler, that will die for his people and for their lands.
