There is no contradiction. Hardy stopped being a Christian, and stared thinking of some sort of Universe creating life, it was sort of vague.

People of his class like to dump themselves up. I have never read his works, I am not into fiction, but I did see a film based on his book. I didn't like the film, it was the old one, but I was besotted by Julie Christie and that's all I remember.
