I don't know how much of Tipu's history is truthful. But in Kerala a lot of people were killed by Tipu during his invasion of Malabar. We call it 'Padayottam'. Pada( Sanskrit-Bhada) means infantry and ottam means run. A lot of people were massacred, raped and looted in that spree. Entire Calicut which was then the spice coast of India was burned down. Temples and local culture were burned down to ashes. Conversions or death was the option that were given to people. Still there is this tradition of calling street dogs as 'Tipu' because of the atrocities he had done to local populace. But this history of Tipu is nowhere to be seen.

@Pk No that's not true. He was an expansionist driven with fanatic motives not a reformist. The social reforms in Kerala for bare chested women happened among Hindus themselves under the saints and sages of the time like Sri Narayana Guru, Ayya vaikuntar, etc. This 'Melmundu samaram' happened in Travancore which Tipu never had any access to or happened long after his life time. And it was prevalent among many matriarchial communities as late as 1950s and 1960s. Among the adivasis barechestedness is still prevalent to a small extent. But it was not a taboo imposed upon them by anybody else. People say caste imposed taxes were there is debatable. And for many amongst them, they never considered it a taboo. For those who look at barechested women with cultural standards, see it as a taboo. These days many people donate clothes to them, takes photo with them and then call themselves reformists. For a progressive state that Travancore was, it was more of a social dilemma. Tipu tried to annexe Malabar but it was a time of political turmoil for a long time, rule of law was never been there enact any reforms. Later he lost the territory of Malabar to the British Madras presidency. Then Britishers brought in this victorian cultural standards through rules in Malabar through missionaries of church.

@Pk Here in Kerala people dreaded and loathed him so much. Massacres and mass murders of 'infidels' happened in Malabar region of Kerala. You heard of Guruvayur temple. This idol which is here for over 3000 years was taken from the temple and was taken through Cochin state and was brought to an another famous temple called Ambalapuzha in Travancore state. Many temples got converted to mosques. Guruvayur somehow got spared by giving bribe to his commanders. Temples were ransacked and burnt. Obscenities everywhere. A lot of popular lores are around that. And how Travancore prepared themselves for an impending danger like a national emergency. Everything was disrupted. But thankfully he was defeated at the border of Travancore near Alwaye by Travancore army, sustained with a grievous wound on his leg. His famous sword was taken by Travancore army which later Vijay Mallya got into his personal collection. After that loss it was bad time for Tipu. Whatever he captured started loosing one by one. He lost his son to political captivity to British until agreement for transfer of his dominion. Many dominions became independent and later ceded to Madras presidency. So on and so forth. But I must say he is an interesting historical figure with many contradictions.

@Pk If ever for the first time an Asian power defeated any European power, it was Travancore under the rule of Marthanda varma in the battle of Colachel. Marthanda varma defeated the Dutch East India company in 1741 when British was just trying to convince Indian rulers to have trade with them. Travancore is one of most underrated states in Indian history. I'm not saying Mysore is any bad, just to put in proper perspective, that's all. Mysore has many benevolent rulers like the Vodeyars, not only Tipu Sultan. I am not to quarell about our history but it is a must to know what great things our ancestors did do and didn't do, what lessons to learn from and move on. Now it's not relevant to say and brag about it and create more divisions, anyway we are one nation. Have a nice time.
