Tipu Sultan destroyed 8,000 Hindu temples and built mosques in their place in several parts of south India. He attacked and plundered Chitradurga’s historical Utasavamba temple, Ekanatheshwari temple, Sampige Siddeshwara temple. Before Tipu, his father, Haidar Ali, had killed the brave ruler of Chitradurga, Madakari Nayaka and his family members and had looted the treasury. In the Malabar region, Hindus were forced to hide the murtis of Triprayar temple when Tipu’s attack was certain. The murtis were reinstalled after Tipu left the Malabar region.
