We talk about the main principles of diffusion and osmosis in this video. Diffusion is the process of movement of molecules from a high to low concentration. Osmosis is similar but relates to water potential of molecules across a partially permeable membrane.

You da man! No, really, you explained this better than my professor. He just throws up slides on a screen and flies through them just to hurry up and finish a chapter. He told us that we're responsible for our own learning. So here I am. Glad I found this channel.

Could you help me understand how Osmosis works within the context of Brining a piece of meat? Shouldn't the water in the animal cells go in the direction of being high in water concentration to lower in the brine? and yet the process is successfully used in practice to marinate and moisten the meat. How so?

Pressure always confuses me. You made the example of making a container smaller which means the molecules will spread out faster because there's less space to cover. But does that mean the pressure is higher...?
@5MinuteSchool
@5MinuteSchool 10 жыл бұрын
If you make the container smaller, the molecules will end up closer together (not spread out as you said) as the size of the container has decreased. This means the pressure within the container is higher because the energies that the molecules have are confined to a much smaller space. Hope this makes sense
@dannichols6261
@dannichols6261 4 жыл бұрын
You didn't have time to include it, but the *area* of the semi-permeable membrane also is a factor in the rate of osmosis (in addition to the temperature, concentration gradient, and the distance for the molecules to travel which you mentioned).

I thought Osmosis was the movement of a solvent through a selectively permeable membrane from an area of LOW solute concentration to an area of HIGH solute concentration. Which is why Osmosis plays a vital role in maintaining the rigidity in plant cells. Right?
@5MinuteSchool
@5MinuteSchool 10 жыл бұрын
Yes you are correct! Thats another way of defining osmosis. Usually areas of lower solute concentration have higher amounts of water than areas with high solute concentration. So to balance to osmotic pressure, water moves from the region with more water and less solute to the region of low water and high solute.
@mizaempo99
@mizaempo99 9 жыл бұрын
So you said it wrong in your video, cause you are telling us the water is moving from a region of higher concentration to a lower one.
