Thank you for watching the final video on the Biology of DSDs! We will likely be covering other sex development conditions in the future, but as of now, this is as far as we'll go. OT-DSD is one of the most complex and least understood sex development conditions. Because it can affect both males and females, and can be caused by a variety of genetic and hormone factors that remain unknown, it is difficult to ascertain all the possible causes for the condition. The sources in the description provide further insight into the complexities of OT-DSD and the associated molecular biology theories for its many causes if one is interested.

So I'm done and yes it's amazing thank you for making these videos If Mr. Eliot is there please tell him I wish he were a professor in my faculty because he's so clear and doesn't mutter to himself all the time. Also, i was wondering, which external genitalia are more likely? Because it seems like the reproductive system grows from inwards to outward and i was wondering if incomplete is usually stopped at a point inside and then the other reproductive system just ... completes what's missing?
@ParadoxInstitute3 жыл бұрын
External genitalia can range from male-typical, female-typical, to over-masculinized for a female (similar to 46,XX CAH) or under-masculinized for a male. I'm not sure as to the incidence of the type though. The reproductive systems do grow from inwards-out. In these cases with OT-DSD, the secondary system will remain incomplete internally (such as a partial uterus in a male with a main Wolffian structure), whereas the main system will have developed further--and sometimes be complete.

How does this relate to streak gonads? Is it the same thing? Has that term been discarded?
@salvolondon3 жыл бұрын
Streak gonad is basically an undifferentiated gonad , so it’s not a testicles nor an ovary, women with Turner syndrome and individuals with swyer syndrome have streak gonads . Ovotestis is , on the other hand , a mixture of ovarian and testicular tissues . Steak gonads don’t produce any hormones while ovotestis produce estrogens and testosterone , the more testicular tissue there is the more testosterone is produced . Ovotestis is much much more rare than streak gonad

Well i can see your points but i can't fully comprehend your definition. You are saying that sex is when you produce either sperm or eggs. So far so good. Some disagree with you and claim that this can't be correct because there are people who can't produce those gametes. You oppose it and say that this doesn't matter because their reproductive anatomy is organized in a such way. So far so good. But then you describe the OT DSD's as having two reproductive anatomies and only one functional. If the actual production of sperm or eggs is irrelevant and the basic factor that defines sex is the reproductive anatomy then why we should exclude the non functional reproductive system from the OT DSD's as a sex defining factor? Isn't that a contradiction? What am i missing here?
@AL-op3ue3 жыл бұрын
yeah, it is a contradiction, and not a "paradox" lol. this guy has a video where he says the determining factor in males is "the presence of the SRY gene and its activation" so anybody who doesnt meet both those requirements are female. he justifies this by saying like SRY activstion is responsible for producing male gametes, and lack of it is responsible for producing female gametes i think. meanwhile there are XX males without the SRY gene that are clearly more designed for sperm production than egg production, so what does the Paradox Man call XX males without the SRY gene? female? even tho they are designed (albeit faultily) for male reproductive development. and theres other videos talking about how "we have to talk about SRY gene or girls will lose at sports and get attacked in prisons" and stuff so i think this channel is a very informed (but not well informed) attack against trans people, either for cynical purposes or maybe because the Paradox Man really believes in his stuff
@hugo4273 жыл бұрын
Although I won't deny that he does contradict himself a few times, you can still determine what sexual developmental pathway people with OT DSD went through. If someone, for instance is possessing remnants of one sex despite having a more developed structure developed around the reproductive function of a certain sex then you are said sex. Having secondary sex characteristics doesn't mean that you have another sex or are both. Sex determination is based around the question "what reproductive role do you best fulfill" (whether you are fertile or not ) and this applies to people with OT DSD
@hugo4273 жыл бұрын
@@AL-op3ue He literally said in a comment in this same video "[XX males] are referred to as male because they develop a phenotype organized around small gametes; they have a penis and testes."
@alanal59972 жыл бұрын
@A L He says the SRY gene because in 99% of cases male development is triggered by the SRY gene. Even in XX males. In most cases the X given by the father had an SRY gene on it. However in rare cases another gene can trigger it. We are still researching it but if you have a gene that triggers male development and you develop male and are geared to produce sperm you are male. It doesn’t matter that your infertile or not. You were still geared to produce a certain sperm. Like he talked about here females with Overtescular Disorder have a mostly female reproductive system. She has fully developed ovaries therefore she was geared to produce ova. It doesn’t matter if she’s fertile and can get pregnant she was still geared towards that despite the underdeveloped tescular tissue. The female development overdosed that gene that developed an underdeveloped teste.

So, according to this video at 5:46 there are multiple criteria used to decide whether the individual should be defined as 'male' or 'female'. Therefore, sex is NOT simply defined by whether or not the person has the body plan to produce sperm vs eggs.

Primarily biological sex male or female is based on gametes egg and sperm. In ovotesticular it varies. The presence of both testicular tissue and ovarian tissues one will usually function but usually not both. For example, a female with ovotesticular becomes pregnant would be an indication that the ovaries are functioning and the testicular while present will not function. If in fact both ovarian and testicular tissue are functioning there is no known biological mechanism or pathway to pass or produce both eggs and sperm. No humans has ever possessed both complete. male and female reproductive organs. I would argue that some individuals with this condition would be female or male while others I would argue would not be a spectrum of sexes but an incomplete sex would be a more accurate description.

5:49 the five factors of determining sex are, technically, ARBITRARY. The biological facts are not SUFFICIENT reasons that COMPEL any particular sex classification. In short, whoever is using such loosy-goosy scheme is pulling out of their wazoo a determination of ‘male’ or ‘female’. It seems more appropriate to just consider (at least some) such people to be neither fully male nor fully female. And that’s fine. Nature doesn’t care about desire for neat and tidy classifications. And it’s ok if some people don’t fit into the made-up binary.

The "actual scientists" you speak of are ideologues who are panicking very much when confronted with fellow scientists who were not indocrinated as they were. The definition of sex that they offer is completely different, and one that is not functional nor helpful to anyone. Defining sex by an arbitrary number of disjointed characteristics creates all sorts of conundrums that would be easily solved had any of these "scientists" applied the actual standing definition of sex. It requires heavy levels of reaching and contradiction to even be applied IRL, and it results in ridiculous corollaries like "women with small breasts must be less female than women with big breasts". Those "scientists" are part of a crowd that is afraid of a life of academic misery for daring to oppose the ones who actually started this and infiltrated academia to the highest level - politically motivated sociologists and gender academics. For biology, your bogus idea of sex is absolutely useless.
