Bioluminescent rat

Video showing a bioluminescent rat walking around it's cage, showing just how bright we can make bioluminescence in living creatures. This rat uses the firefly luciferase system. He's been injected with luciferin which is why you see the glow effect spreading across his body over time.
It's a little bit freaky which is why we are doing plants instead :)

What effects did the bioluminescence have on the rat? Does it affect their behavior? Sleep patterns?? This is really interesting.

I'm here from the Netflix series Un Natural Selection as well - and it looks like this rat is getting it's "firefly luciferase system" from injection, not genetic editing, as the dog breeder in the Netflix video implies. It's a very big difference to inject luciferase into a living thing and watch it bioluminesce vs genetically modifying an organism to produce it's own luciferase. The second method is fare more difficult to accomplish and might be a genetic modification that could be passed onto the organism's offspring, while an injection is only temporary as the organism will metabolize the luciferase and return to normal eventually. It will return to normal, but it will have one hell of a story for it's mouse friends!

Light in this rat comes from two chemicals, the luciferase which this rat has been genetically modified to produce and the luciferin which is injected. Our plants will be engineered to have both molecules and not need the injection.

That's correct, our plant will be green. These guys used a modified version of the enzyme which produces the glowing color which changed the color. In theory it's possible to adjust the color but that comes at a luminosity trade-off
