Really? Oh wow thanks for clarifying. I guess all the papers I have compiled in my library are wrong. In the world of science, when multiple studies show contradicting information, it's safe to say the results are NOT proven. Read the article below, it is one of many papers that shows it is not effective. Furthermore, a few studies that show success have flawed experimental designs. Lastly, feel free to use the lights. A quick google search will show you how many people are not happy with the results. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4178330/

Regarding the "light-activated" peroxide at 2:13, peroxides are quite unstable molecules and exposure to radiation will degrade the peroxide (turn it into water and oxygen in case of hydrogen peroxide). The free oxygen atom may or may not react with your teeth. On the other hand, when the peroxide oxidizes directly your teeth, that oxygen atom will be used in the reaction that whitens your teeth. I haven't conduced research on this, but the theory tells me that using a light to break down peroxides will yield uncertain results, compared to not using a light.

Interesting. I just had the one hour laser treatment which along with the descale and polish made a massive improvement to my teeth whiteness. However, I also got the custom trays which are used for the following week. So I guess possibly best of both worlds??
@BiomimeticDentistry2 жыл бұрын
Most of the instant change was likely the scale and polish to remove surface stains. My teeth get significantly whiter after a cleaning as well. One session with the light and gel is as effective as one session with just the gel.

Excellent video Doc! One question, the protocol you use in your cases includes one day off from the whitening tray to diminish the chances of suffering from hypersensitivity, after 2 days wearing them overnight. My question is: how many cycles of on-and-off do you usually recommend the patient follows to achieve your treatment goals? For a period of 2-3 weeks? Thanks in advance!
@BiomimeticDentistry4 жыл бұрын
Completely up to the patient and how much whitening they want to achieve. Typical is 2-4 weeks, but some times 2-3 months. Remember that results are progressive so its not 2-3 months until you see results, just gradual improvement over time.

Idk I just got the zoom whitening done for the first time and the results are miles ahead of any whitening strip I've used in the past. There's also conflicting studies shown on the light. Multiple sources claim the light triggers a reaction so there's probably a propriety blend besides the peroxide (given this isn't light activated) otherwise why would they use a light.

I don't know what you mean. It depends on the gel but usually with the gels I would recommend, you don't do cycles. They are active for up to 10 hours so you would just wear it for 2 or more hours, but thats not for any gel so it depends on what you have. Unfortunately, it is not a universal application protocol.

Thank you Doc!! Can i use my aligners as the trays? Currently using CANDID aligners…
@BiomimeticDentistry3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can but results vary due to the material and design of the trays. They are for different purposes. I have seen patients use the trays effectively sometimes, but most of the time it is ineffective and leads to gum irritation. This is because aligner trays usually do not extend down to the gumline. Aligner trays are also hard and do not form a nice suction seal at the gumline. If you try it, do it for an hour or so max and ensure your gums are not turning white or getting irritated. I would personally recommend you wait until you are done with aligners and get a good set of bleaching trays. Recently, I helped Sprintray (a 3D printer company specialized in dentistry) started producing dental models with a perfect design to make excellent bleaching trays. That means you can ask your dentist about that, but they may not have the 3D printer.

Is this safe for sensitive teeth or will I regret it for the rest of my life? (Kinda like when I fried my hair with some bleach based hair product and it never grew back the same.) I don't need super bright white teeth, I just want to not wince every time I see myself in a video or picture. (So 2 or 3 shades lighter.) EDIT: By "this," I mean the custom tray Carbamide Peroxide treatment. Maybe I should do like 5%... I'm so worried, I'm always let down by people who are supposed to be professional. I can only trust myself to take care of myself. Maybe I would even start with like 3% and do it over night, then wait a couple weeks and repeat... hmm... we'll see.
@BiomimeticDentistry2 жыл бұрын
Hey. This is the safest method available but there are conditions that definitely contribute to sensitivity like recession and abfraction. Everyone is different. We always manage to whiten and find a protocol that is tolerable when a patient is committed. I am Not aware of commercially available 3% or 5% carbamide peroxide teeth whitening gels. If you are really sensitive, there may be a reason.

While I can't comment on any whitening agents. I can comment on an awesome toothbrush. I purchased a Diamondclean 9700, over 4 years ago and it still is performing like the day I purchased it. I picked mine up on black friday at Kohls, but after checking the price, they are the same now that I paid on sale then- besides the little bit I got back in Kohls cash. I drink sodas and don't eat much candy and my teeth are in great shape; even my dental hygienist says that my build up is much less than other patients that she sees. If you do pick one up, make sure you purchase the black plastic replacements(when you eventually need them). The white ones, from like Costco, really aren't the best, nor do they have a proper fit. Lest I forget, my wife and I share the same base and use it every day. We charge the device, maybe once a week, we only do that because we feel that it needs a charge, not because it dies. Good luck friend.

how about wearing over the counter whitening strips overnight?
@BiomimeticDentistry Жыл бұрын
The active ingredient in over the counter products is not active for more than ~30 minutes and if it was, it would irritate the gums since its not sealed.

I want to believe you, but literally every study I find says the light does have an influence on the whitening process. Maybe you were referring to old studies?
@BiomimeticDentistry Жыл бұрын
Show me your studies please. I have no reason for you to believe me or not, I am not selling you anything. What I am saying is fact. I don't know what is considered old to you but the studies are relevant because the gel and the light have not changed. This review study reviews 15 other studies with conflicting information and concludes no difference pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25298598/ When something works, you don't find this level of conflict. Furthermore, measuring the effectiveness immediately after the session creates an illusion of effectiveness because the teeth are dried and therefore whiter.

As such i have, considering my age(58), reasonable good teeth, but they look bad( dark) I eat every day Blueberries and Blackcurrant, + drink coffee...there is a price to pay for the vitamins in the berries. Not sure a whitening would help much.

From a dentist, but the tricky part is how well they are made. Sometimes they are no better than over-the counter.I'm sorry I can't be of more help there but maybe ask them or show them what you want and see what they say.

I bought over counter ones while back, and they were good put them in boiling water then in my mouth and sucked to tighten it as did 1 at a time, then put in cold water to harden them a bit, they were inexpensive and ok

Can you do this even with braces?
@BiomimeticDentistry2 жыл бұрын
No. Not recommended for several reasons including that the whitening will not effectively whiten under the metal brackets so it will be very uneven.
