The open world and the looting/crafting are literally the ONLY parts that (Sort of) work! Linear levels won't fix bad combat, bad story and boring characters, or awkward progression and meaningless skill unlocks. In fact, a linear Rachet and Clank-style game practically DEMANDS tight combat and carefully escalated challenge, balanced with new weapons or abilities that are both effective and fun to use. What part of this game suggests anyone involved could pull THAT off? Though I absolutely agree that the game needed more focus. Cutting the slap-dash faction and morality systems would've been a good start. This one might've worked better as an open world survival/craft-em-up, with minimal story, fewer NPCs and formal quests, and more open-ended gameplay in general. Although, Survival/crafting usually implies some level of base-building, and if those mechanics got the same level of polish everything else did, well...they probably shouldn't try to add anything MORE to this mess. But the colorful kung-fu animal post-apocalypse, the weapon and armor crafting, and the idea of being a little racoon-mutant loot goblin... all that stuff had potential. Once I got past the painfully slow tutorial and story set-up, when they finally took the rails off and let me do whatever I wanted, I had a reasonably good time. Just exploring ruins and slapping together ridiculous weapons out of random junk I found. The "zones" or bosses you need special gear or vehicles for weren't a bad idea, but it sucks that once you got the suit for one, the quests for all the others played out more or less the same. It would've been better if you just had to scavenge and craft items until you made something with sufficient resistances. Or if the parts and blueprints for the vehicles were scattered all over the map, instead of being tied to a single fetch quest from a designated quest giver. Basically, I think the game needed more focus mechanically (Just do a couple of things that you know you can do reasonably well, scale back on that ambition) and LESS focus narratively (Didn't need a story, and the attempts to graft one on are clumsy as hell.) Just let me run around being a mutant rat Mad Max, looting the remnants of the old world to fight the goofy-ass monsters of the new one.
@Sturmensky6 ай бұрын
I'd say either go with what you said, or focus on a tighter, more linear story-driven experience. Or, better yet, both. I remember finding the intro up until the end of encountering your old home to be the most engaging part of the game. The moment it shifted to broad open world, the amount of raw filler became... painfully obvious.
@partymantis34216 ай бұрын
I was so hyped for this thing, playing as a mutant rat in a post-apocalypse overtaken by nature? sign me up! But with the clashing tone of kiddy vs gritty, comic word effects vs the "realistic"artstyle, simplistic angel/demon on your shoulder choices & the narrator "translating" the critterfolk language yet still uses words like "mooma & poopsy" , (just say mom & dad what are you doing!) it just kept piling up. & you describing it as a:"story driven game without the story" summes it up pretty well. Great vid man, keap it up
@grimkitten82543 ай бұрын
yeah this overly childlish infantilizing language is the biggest thing making everything else super lame and frustrating not that some things like the elvis guy atleast not being nowhere near what everyone else i suppose to look like and that makes it very uncohesive but the hyperrealistic overall look of other creatures could work if it wasnt paired with such infantilizing language.

I was having a lot of fun with this game. Learned pretty quickly that it was mid, but the design was charming, and it was stylized in some ways. I got it for free and I was bored. The RPG level-up system was where my interest lied. Basically, I crunched the numbers and realized I could be absolutely broken in terms of DPS by just putting all of my points into luck. Played for about 10-15 hours, putting every. single. level-up into my luck stat. Then I decided it was time to dive into the armor creation system. I had avoided it because it looked fucking stupid, just attaching a rivet to my shoulder jutting out perpendicular to my body, but hey, Some of the armor upgrades let me boost my luck. That's my whole prerogative. Tried adding a piece of luck-boosting armor to my outfit. Reset my luck stat to what it was at level one. Stayed gone when I took it off. Uninstalled the game right then and there.

Been thinking about this comment I left here a while back. Really drives home how important Focus is to game development. I was able to put up with so much 🐂 💩 to play this game. And, like, it was downright enjoyable at times! I don’t think there’s any version of this game that was **good** but people absolutely die by bad games all the time. Fallout New Vegas barely runs, even after patches and everything, but it knew what it wanted to be and really locked in on that vision. Bio mutant could have been a cult classic if they just cut back like 80% and made it more of a dungeon crawler with a passable-enough story and cut out all the sub-systems. No classes, let the players level up an attribute every level, and let them unlock new abilities based on their attributes every other level. Rewarding me putting everything into luck by making my ultimate give everyone around me random effects in the spirit of d&d wild magic would have been such a fantastic reward for engaging in the game

You are failing to understand how it works. There's not a single bug you found that QA didn't find. Not even one. No matter how hard you try, you didn't ever do that, not even once. By a game's release the bug database will have hundreds maybe even thousands of bugs in various states of unresolved limbo. QA knows. The bug was reported, and the dev team decided not to fix it. No other possibility exists.
@bean97864 ай бұрын
@@AllfatherBlack You're right, of course - I can't figure out if that makes it worse or better. I can't imagine thinking it isn't a big deal, but it had to have been knocked down a priority list at some point over other things. @WobblesandBean4 ай бұрын
Hi, I have worked in video game QA, and I can tell you with certainty: they did see it. But the devs likely didn't bother to fix it. Visual bugs like that are typically low priority, whereas things like crashing and soft locks are low priority. The closer a game gets to launch date, the now bugs get flagged as "won't fix" by the devs. As for why they never patched it post launch, beats the hell outta me.

But the next time I saw it was THREE years later on the GAMESCOM. And the friends that played it the first time there, told me it was the exact demo, just with 5 minutes more for the character creation. This game was an issue for the publisher AND the developer. If someone told me "hey my game is so far in development, that we are confident we can let some people play it." And then don't finish it in 3 years I would push too. Btw bio mutant released 2 years later, after I played it on gamescom. So from first playable to actual release we have 5 years.

The even more pointless thing about the "Morality" system is that it's super easy to cheat. Aside from the prisoner rescue stuff, you get "good" and "evil" points when you capture small animals with your net, and can either "Pet" them, or kill them. I simply maxed out my "Good" points through normal gameplay, by just choosing NOT to be a dick for no reason. Once I'd unlocked all the "Good" powers, I then caught and killed a bunch of small animals to get all the "Evil" ones. And then turned my "Aura" back to "Good" using the same method (Catching and petting them instead). I retained access to both sets of powers afterwards, meaning there was literally no downside to doing this. Well, other than time wasted...and that the fact that almost none of the powers were worth it. That's not a "half-baked" system, that's just straight up RAW.

I got this for $7 and still had buyers remorse. It felt like a car trunk stuffed with ideas that were popular at the time. Insignificant choices trying to be an old Bioware game. Gunplay as Ratchet and Clank were making a comeback. RPG open world mechanics like Elders Scrolls. The conquering bases felt it resembled Ghost of Tsushima taking back towns from Mongols. Crafting from survival open world like Fallout. Four major fights that serve as the ultimate goal, wooo, wonder where I heard that one. Not that these ideas are bad and you're allowed to use things that worked before, but it causes a lack of focus in design. Another very notorious example of this is Duke Nukem Forever. No idenity, too many cooks in the kitchen taking off of ideas popular at the time. Only difference is that Biomutant couldn't cook where Duke hit world record of development time and burned the kitchen.

The narrator is supposed to make this feel like a documentary but they never actually play around with that. As you said the creatures all look like cheap plushes so why didn’t they lean into it and have the weapons and environment look like toys and plush blankets or pillows. There are so many directions this could be taken in but everything is so one note and benign, the problem is though to take it in any direction you just have to axe other parts but it’s certainly preferable to having no real style.

The only good ones are the ones you transverse with( the mushroom and the levitation) maybe because my specialty is with dead eye and not the others ones but still the guns are op. You slowly build this idea in your head, it's cool. Just like someone you would perceive as cool. That idea, is in reality a totally different game than what you expect. Then you finally get it, load it up and hit play. It's not what you thought it was. Just like how if you were to hang up with that Cool Guy and find out...he's not really all that cool. He's boring, maybe just downright disgusting, maybe he doesn't handle criticism well at all and you feel you wasted your time. So many games, hyping themselves up as the Cool Guy, then ended up not being cool at all.

The combat wasn’t super great, but it wasn’t bad. On top of that, it felt too Borderlandsy to me. Just tried way too hard to be funny. But hey, it was prerelease. Got to play it for free on PS Plus years later and regretted the thirty minutes I spent on it. I don’t usually try to look for things to hate in a game, and I try to keep an open mind. But man, this was such a 5/10 experience through and through. There was definitely some improvement in all the areas I mentioned before, but it was still a mess. Nothing in the final product felt like it belonged with any other part. Just felt like an overall lack of polish on top of straight up strange design decisions. ......neither of your arguments are making this game sound good. "It's enjoyable when other games you like can't be played or you barely expect anything and don't have to buy it".

th guns have infinite ammo. you can literally just shoot the enemy until it’s dead. all you have to do is avoid being hit. there’s no reason to even have a melee weapon lol

Depends if you know the crafting system (wich is weird) you can make a truly op gun or you can waste the best parts possible. And you have the in combat reloading wich can be extremely slow.
@MadMadNomad6 ай бұрын
Yeah, my problem was that I ended up finding some parts and making a stupidly powerful gun fairly early in the game, and there was never a reason to use anything else. Which sucked a lot of the fun out of exploring and looting, because nothing I found was better than what I already had.

I remember playing this game doing everything I can and to be honest the story made no sense. Why are we wasting going around the world to do things when your main story is about capturing some guy out of vengeance in the end? They just threw everything in that game. Thay is pretty much it.

But Fable exists? This is definitely not the correct game to introduce someone new to the genre, unless you want to overwhelm them. And the story isn't interesting enough to engage someone that doesn't have much interest in the RPG mechanics. Fable is way simpler, while still retaining the meat of the action RPG genre (it even affords itself a morality system), while having a compelling and easy to understand story. Fable is what Biomutant wanted to be.

I played through the game, don't remember a lot of it, as a psi-freak using pretty much only ki spark and levitate. I felt like a thunder god I battle, but I found the fighting boring even before I could use lightning nonstop. The only fights i looked forward to were the bosses, and in 2 of them you use vehicles rather than your own skill, and the other two felt super reliant on guns. I felt like specializing in intelligence and magic hurt me in the end.

About the guns I think 🤔 you were supposed to upgrade luck so you can find super powerful gun parts....it does suck that the game doesn't tell you about this. I forgot if luck was separate from crit chance but upgrading these two things makes guns better. Not your fault....100% the dev's fault for making it that way without fully explaining it.
@joshevertonyt6 ай бұрын
Partially my fault haha, I usually upgrade crit chance heaps in games and did put quite a lot into luck, just never got it far enough to push it over the edge

small amount of advice: for the thumbnail I think it would be better if you put the "who is this for" in 2 or 3 lines and put it in the spot left of the protagonist and also change the color to just white. Changing the thumbnail can also cause a new influx of viewers sometimes.

I do not have much to say on this one, as I have very little investment in the topic. However I've found myself at a greater willingness to commit the time, and some anticipation, with a new Josh Everton release, even if some topics are (for me) a tough sell. I say as much though, because you do continue to deliver. I am mostly shocked at the depth for which you've regarded this title as it seems particularly obscure; not something I'd even heard of until seeing this video. I may be posing such an opinion from bias informed on video content alone, but it feels almost a waste of critique. And I am not certain if it is simply in my personal lens, but it feels like you had a lesser strength of interest in the topic after a point in the digest. Nevertheless as food-for-thought on creative integrity, and good accompaniment dialogue to work, I thoroughly enjoyed the exploration of Biomutant as from your experience. And also saddened by the frequency with which such simple development issues like user-interface (per the start of the video) are able to get passed through on officially licensed media in the market. It is not all films, games, stories, etc, but an alarming amount seem to forgive themselves in negligence as years proceed. To me, in deeply valuing what a game is intent on saying, the sheer lack of meaningful writing just oozes either a lack of care or stiff working conditions. I will remain perpetually worried what concessions of the next ten years will bring to video games in media as developers seek a _concluded_ project over a _finished_ one, more and more. I do hope Experiment 101 - like all creative teams in the early stumbling phase - may learn and grow from this and show a new product that demonstrates an ability to evolve. Great video, Josh.

They straight up defrauded their audience. The biggest selling point to the game was being a "mutant" having the ability to visibly mutate changing stats throughout the game becoming a creature of your own design, grow wings, grow combat claws ect. this is what they pitched to everyone, very shortly before release they scrapped this and were extremely quiet about it. Now its just a game with cool art design and no creativity to be found beyond that. Every town you capture feels exactly the same, good and evil dont matter, the classes are all heavily unbalanced no system in the game feels complete. Some money man came in late in development and rushed production and absolutely ruined this game which had genuine potential, would be my assumption.
