@@___AVARICE___ Not poor sales, but rather the sales had reached a plateau. As in, the sales were no longer climbing, but they also were not receding. They had reached an equilibrium, and LEGO had decided not to keep the theme going in order to end the brand on a high note so that it could be viable enough to bring back later, which they did. That is how G2 happened. That was doing well too, but LEGO had become overzealous after their success with the LEGO movie. It turns out some things had to be cut back, and it is highly speculated that BIONICLE, being a contraction theme, was the first to hit the chopping block. The LEGO Movie was the best and worst thing to happen to LEGO.

@@juice2307 I know, I really wish Lego would sell the rights to some other studio, that would be willing to revive it in some manner. Heck, even if we got it revived as a tv series or series over movies, that would better in my book, especially if we go gen 1 story only, as a tv series instead of a series of comics and tv commercials. Or heck, sell them to the likes of Figma, or some other action figure company, I could see them return as constructible action figures, rather than contraction sets. It would at least still given them that mix and match ability (albeit a lot more limited) while also keeping the theme of the interchangeable masks. I would be something.

Mata Nui's original body is forty million feet (7,575 mi or 12,192 km) tall. Mata Nui also had a camouflage system that created an island that hid his robotic face. When he crash landed on Aqua Magna, the system was damaged, & Energized Protodermis leaked out, creating flora which covered the island. The Bohrok were designed to clean the island of all that was produced so he would be able to move freely when he chose to leave. Which is why the island of Mata Nui is barren in this movie.

Yeah, it is a slightly modified word from a tribal language (just like many names in bionicle ) which is Makutu, that means witchcraft , curse. Also every mistika and phantoka were makuta, krika, bitil gorast etc

@IamVeryFrozen while I do see your point, I must disagree. The matoran are slaves in the same way that your blood cells are slaves to you. They are literally a part of Mata Nui, his cells. There "slavery" was just them living their lives. Also, correct me if I am wrong, Mata Nui was never a very hands on god (one of the reason Makuta wanted to overthrow him) and never forced anyone to worship him, unlike Makuta when he took over.

I love the detail that the Kanohi Ignika became black after being ejected from the MU into space because even though it housed the spirit of Mata Nui, it still interpreted him (or at least his version of the MU) as dead. Mata Nui didn't die when the Ignika got ejected. His spirit was forced into the Ignika, which then made a body for Mata Nui when it landed. Maybe you're thinking of when it turns silver during the Mahri storyline and Matoro has to resurrect him?

I mean my conspiracy theory is that Mata Nui really did die, but the Ignika didn’t bring HIM back OR kill Matoro, it actually dissolved Matoro’s body and turned him into Mata Nui, replacing Matoro’s memories with Mata Nui’s, as it did when it brought Hydraxon “back” by turning Dekar “into” him. I’ve shared the theory and no ones really been able to disprove it. Some have suggested that Matoro could have perhaps been absorbed into Mata Nui’s soul, or influenced it in some way. Both theories explain perhaps why Mata Nui is so keen on the word “Toa” and fulfilling his destiny to his people, who he never cared much for before. Sure, Mata Nui could have had a change of heart... or it could just be that he’s influenced by Matoro in some way, that nobility and sense of mission. We’ll never really know (though in my retelling of the Bara Magna years in a book series I’m working on, we DO find out this to be the case)... someone told me that if this were the case, Matoro might as well just be presumed gone forever and Mata Nui brought back, just like Dekar-Hydraxon, since the spell of the Ignika wouldn’t be broken. I also push the theory because the Ignika’s ‘ethics’ are very weird and bipolar. It will kill things for no reason, or for fun. It will upset a battle to turn Tahu back into a Toa Mata. It will tolerate some nut like Vezon while hating him and for whatever reason not killing him. It will deem someone like Dekar ‘worthy’ and save his life... but at such incredible cost as sacrificing his soul, basically. Now think of how it views Matoro. Matoro was the only person it ever loved or even revered. Think about what it might do to someone like that. It sees him as God, so why not MAKE HIM God? The Ignika styled its own Toa form after Matoro, and Mata Nui’s Glatorian body styled after the Toa form, it highly-revered him. If it would save some obscure Po-Matoran’s life by turning him into Hydraxon, imagine what it would turn its idol into? Especially with how amazed it was by Matoro’s selflessness. So, at the last second, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the Ignika actually took over rather than Matoro and made sure he could live on forever- as Mata Nui. That was the soul Teridax bound to the Ignika and shot into space, that turned into “Toa” Mata Nui (hmm, what a strange and forced name, what if it wasn’t ‘forced’ and more ‘force of habit’). Who went around calling these strange new beings “Toa” even though they weren’t, acting like a Toa would...

The point I'd disagree is that Matoro did not survive, like the previous Toa that used the Ignika, he was turned into pure energy, nothing survived the process. Maybe the Mask Of Life copied his memories (Matoro was able to see the mask's history and understand what happens to the user, he knew he was going to die to save the universe and welcomed his destiny with no hesitation) and used it to influence Mata Nui in some way into caring for the Matoran by turning him into a Toa. Also, Mata Nui was created to observe other civilizations and do other tasks given by the great beings, so he just focused on his purpose and went on with his tasks, just like humans don't really think about our cells and how important they are on maintaining our bodies working as best as possible, perhaps after seeing Matoro's memories and his selfless determination to save his friends and their universe, he wanted to be like him and redeem himself for neglecting his people. have a nice day / night

Nope. In order for the Toa Nuva and Makuta to reach Karda Nui, the Inika sunk Voya Nui, revealing a passage to the the centre of either the Mata Nui robot or the planet itself. In doing so they also destroyed Mahri Nui. But fear not, the Toa relocated all Matoran to Metru Nui. Which after a few hundred years of repair and maintenence from Dume and the Rahaga was as spiffing as ever... and not destroyed during Mata Nui's awakening. Everything above water though? Welp, you saw them dripping off the big guy.

Ya know, when mata Nui rose, the Bohrock swarms were probably roaming across the island. While no one's there, it was their chance. Cadok and Gadok (mispelling?) were still imprisoned underground the island. When Mata Nui rose, he killed the complete population of Bohrock and Cadok and Gadok. That was what killed all of them, even though it wasn't mentioned., it's obvious, just not thought of. Give me a thumbs up so people can see this.

I think that in the story the toa reactivated the bohrok to terraform the island of mata nui after evacuating the matoran to metru nui in preparation for the rising of Mata Nui.

Its' explained in the lore that the Bohrok are much more darker than you'd imagine: they are essentially the final stage of the Av-Matoran life cycle: the custodians of Mata Nuis' central-most systems, and are tasked with clearing out infestations to their hosts system. Makuta intentionally awoke the Bohrok Swarm to wipe out the Matoran who were a part of Metru Nui: Mata Nuis' Central Processor in order to keep them from returning to Metru Nui and jumpstarting Mata Nui and purging Makutas' corruption fast enough. The Bohrok were just following their initial programming and constituted the Matoran as an infection to Mata Nui as a whole that needed removal. Scarily-enough, due to Takua being an Av-Matoran that was later disguised as a Ta-Matoran experiencing nightmares involving the Bohrok from the _Mata Nui Online Game_ can be conceptualized as the part of Takua that briefly remembered his nature as an Av-Matoran as himself fearing his own mortality and loss of individuality to become a mindless machine. It's really telling that Takua becoming a Toa of Light was the only possible chance he could take to avoid the Av-Matorans' equivalent of "Death".

It really should have been the end, it was literally called “The Final Battle.” I think my life would have been much better if it had. I was shocked and surprised there was a 2009, with sets that cool and unique, and really got attached and thought it would last much longer. Then it brutally ended, as I hit puberty, and just symbolized that the world had come to an end for me in many ways. I’ll never forgive those creators for being that careless, they should have just ended it in 2008 instead of failing so miserably in 2009. 2009 looked amazing at first. Coolest sets (to me), interesting mysterious storyline, trying to figure out where the hell we even were. But then it went to shit, especially in the movie. It went from a serious story to a kiddie story, with a cute bug and an idiotic race of Skrall that couldn’t even talk (not so at the beginning of 2009, they were very intelligent and devious). Then it just ended, with that botched and rushed “Stars” garbage... the Makuta-Mata Nui battle could have been 2008 on steroids if executed properly, imagine in videos like these!

The moment when Makuta actually WON that battle was a shock to me. It seemed that LEGO was planning on doing that from the start of the Karda-Nui arc. I felt the end of the 2001-2010 story line was satisfying and fitting for the franchise. Kinda wish the series DID NOT get a reboot.

This could have been the start of an amazing new chapter in the BIONICLE saga, but Bara-Magna and it's events just didn't have as much work put into it as the rest of the story. It could have been the story of a warrior messiah learning that the last vestige of life on this world he is now on, was used to make him god of another, and now, stripped of his power with two worlds he owes a debt, he must make his way up from enslaved gladiator, to the saviour of the world. Man why did they get Glatorian so wrong?

The story wasn't overly complex, the extended universe stuff was wholely optional, you don't need to read about takanuva travelling through other dimensions because the only impact it has is that he has a new staff and can fly. 2007 wasn't badly designed, they actually had very diverse designs, which was missing in previous years

I know it was supposedly planned from the beginning, but I never really liked the idea of the whole Spirit Robot thing. It just made the whole Bionicle world seem smaller. Before that reveal, there really was no edge of the map. The whole world, outside of the select few islands we’ve been to, was a complete unknown. But now, where will the next adventure take us, to the left kneecap? And I know, after the reveal, the majority of the story didn’t even take place in the giant Spirit Robot. I know that they took us to other worlds, but Bionicle barely even mentioned space travel until the very last arc. Now, the story completely hinges on the idea. Not to mention, island hopping makes for a better story setting than an endless desert.

CJ 442 Yep, Bionicle, especially everything from the Ignition saga onwards (2006-2010), is an early example of the infamous practice of "subverting audience expectations". They were so in love with their main twist they had been setting up from the beginning that they switched the genre from Fantasy to "Science" Fiction (hardly deserving of the word "science") mid-way, and made up the most contrived explanations imaginable for why the Matoran should want to destroy their own island.

I read about it on the Bionicle wiki a long time ago. Turns out, every Av-Matoran or Matoran of Light is either destined to become a Toa or a Bohrok at so point in their lives. Once the transformation is complete, they are then teleported to the Bohrok Nests to be fitted with Krana.

I'm glad that they went back to the drawing board with the reboot sets to create something much more faithful in spirit to the original Toa Mata/Nuva designs. Then again, I may just be a grumpy old man who doesn't see the greatness of the Mistika Toa designs (besides solid articulation). My main beef with the designs are their color-schemes. See, both the Phantoka and Mistika Toa suffer from the same issue that plagued Kongu Mahri, which is that there is so much dull gray/silver in their designs while their individually unique colors have been demoted to almost just being accents. Regardless of the quality of the designs, they tragically sell themselves short because you'll see their one-note color schemes that makes them all blend together long before you get in close to admire their unique qualities. Luckily, the Makuta and some truly outstanding titans really does save the year all on their own. Just to clarify, I don't hate the Toa designs, Tahu Mistika is actually one of my favorite Inika-builds, but they have problems.

Yet we as the audience are supposed to care about the Great Beings, even though we never got to meet them in the story. 🤦‍♂️ This is why I'm happy I got out when I did, in 2005. The prequels are fine, but within story chronology, Bionicle should have ended after Mask of Light. Which most normies probably believe it did, since nothing came after that until The Legend Reborn. 😁

The authors wanted this plot twist from the beginning, if that's what you mean, but the reason Bionicle attracted so many young fans from 2001 to 2003 (which was the height of its popularity) had nothing to do with this. They were so obsessed with pulling off this twist that they didn't mind destroying the heart of the fantasy world they had created for their audience - the island of Mata Nui. That's as if the rebels had conquered the Death Star, only for it to accidentally blow up Tatooine. Even The Last Jedi didn't go that far.

I'm sad I stopped collecting after 2006. I still got the comics for the 2007 storyline in the mail though. But 13 year old me was peer presurred into that stupid "growing up" period to stop collecting cause "wahhhh you're too old now, wahhhh you have to stop in order to grow". Urg. Makes me sad I fell for that lie cause Matoro's sacrifice was basically the Tony Stark Endgame of its time. I never got to collect or read anything from 2008. How epic was this storyline, guys? Like why did the Toa Nuva split into two groups? And why did Takanuva get such a massive upgrade? And.... did that shock ending please fans or anger them? First time I heard about it, it kinda sounded controversal to me lol.

RandomRedwingFilms The comics didn't show some of the most controversial parts: Neither do they include the "Clean it all" line during the Bohrok arc in 2002 (one of the few hints to foreshadow the robot reveal); nor did they actually show the rising robot destroying the island of Mata Nui - just the robot's ascension itself. That comic was the last one that got published here in Germany, and sure, I was irritated by Makuta winning, but I was no longer emotionally invested in the story itself anyway. What would have ticked me off much more back then was the intended destruction of the island of Mata Nui on the heroes' part - you know, the supposed "paradise" that actually drew us into the story in 2001. I got out in 2005, because I didn't like the Hordika, and the only line I somewhat regret not getting are the Toa Inika. Bionicle jumped the Takea shark quite literally when it transformed the Inika yet again and went underwater to Mahri Nui. Sure, Matoro makes his noble sacrifice, but that was kind of old at this point, after Jaller and Lhikan had already sacrificed themselves in the first two movies. Starting in 2006, it was all about making Bionicle dark and edgy. And they had no second thoughts about crapping all over their old heroes in doing so (the Toa Nuva just get their masks handed to them again and again on Voya Nui). It's a deconstruction of their own mythos. If 2001-2005 was the MCU, 2006-2008 is Watchmen or The Boys. If Bionicle were Star Wars, 2001-2003 would be Episode IV-VI, 2004-2005 would be Episode I-III (prequels), and 2006-2008 would be the Disney sequel trilogy that tanked the franchise.
