Using a formula I found in the book linked below, I make a water resistant glue that has been around for hundreds of years. This formula has been used in aircraft, boats, and is still used in exterior plywood. Selected for superior bonding strength over Urea-Resin glue.
The book on this and other Casein glues, paints and adhesives are found: archive.org/details/caseinits...
At GEO-sustainable, we formulate everything using sustainable materials to make bioplastics, solar panels and supercapacitors.

Wow, great find. I've seen tons of beginner level recipes for various bioplastics and such that aren't waterproof (or at least resistant) plastered all over the internet, usually in the form of annoying listicles. This is by far the in depth reference I was hoping for. I look forward to trying some of these recipes out. Much obliged, and subbed.

Yes, I think it will stick to metal. Wood to wood, paper to paper is fine. I would be willing to try metal to metal. Give it a try, lay it on thick. Heat it in an oven at 200F for a few hours. Never tried wood to metal. I am building a greenhouse right now and I am using this formula. Check it out.

The production of urea from inorganic raw materials was an important conceptual milestone in chemistry and is considered the birth of biochemistry. This synthesis showed that a metabolic product can be produced in the laboratory without biological raw materials, and ultimately led to the fall of the theory of vitalism.

Well, this is surely the most useful video I've found about casein glue! One question, has any heating been applied to your process when stirring the ingredients for the WBUC formulation? Maybe on the hotplate magnetic mixer, or using warm water instead?? 'Cause I've tried that recipe myself and I was only able to get a sticky-but-too-watery solution, that remained liquid for days... I was wondering what could gone wrong (seems that urea didn't stirred as intended, some traces remained in the bottom... )
@GEOsustainable
@GEOsustainable 3 жыл бұрын
I did not heat. I only recorded the room temperature. It takes from 2 to 24 hours to mix, depending on how it clumps when it goes in water. I would say, give it more time to mix.

Yarn once was made from milk. Milk yarn dresses were popular and still a much sought after item on eBay. The yarn was manufactured in Italy. Look into QMilch, I think they are making it now. I haven't found a natural way to waterproof milk plastic, but milk yarn is processed similar to how rayon yarn is made. Rayon manufacture is so environmentally damaging, it is banned from manufacture in the US. Early days of Rayon fabric required it to be Dry Cleaned because Rayon wasn't waterproof. Whatever they did to do that is the same thing you will need for your yarn. Look up Viscose Rayon. Milk yarn sounds cool, but making it is not so cool. If you find a way to naturally waterproof milk plastic, let us know. That is the Holy Grail of bioplastics. In my opinion, bioplastic doesn't suit every application, but we would be wise to use it where we can and reduce items made from natural gas.

Is this food-safe with the addition of urea? Trying to make a food-safe glue that I can run into a cracked ceramic coffee mug (basically, immersion in the heated glue for time to allow it to flow into the crack, then removal, cleaning, and curing)... I think casein may be my ticket to this. I've found another recipe that calls for casein, sodium hydroxide, and calcium hydroxide, but unfortunately it is not a "waterproof" glue, but a "water resistant" glue, meaning use will most likely see it ultimately fail eventually (tho, another batch and application isn't the end of the world)....

Hey great video! very informative. I have a few questions for a project I'm working on, hope you can answer some of them (: 1) what materials do you recommend using to make this glue non-toxic but still water-resistant? 2) do you know if this glue can be used as a good oxygen barrier? 3) what would you recommend using to make the glue thicker but still keep its qualities? 4) how long do you think it can last in an outdoor environment? thank you!!
@GEOsustainable
@GEOsustainable Жыл бұрын
1) This formula cannot be made NON toxic. Use a HYDE or a PVA glue. 2) It is an amazing oxygen barrier. Superior to plastic. 3) Use more Casein. 4) 2 weeks if fully exposed in gentle weather. And this also depends on what has been glued. It can be permanent on wood, metal and glass.

I had to look it up. I knew Casein was and is still used in aircraft and boats, as well as exterior plywood. No other glue in existence can beat Casein bonding strength. Very high humidity can soften the glue, but will regain it's bond strength as soon as it drys. I have flown in the Mosquito reconnaissance in Vietnam. Those babies are fast, fast and super agile.

You found it. Is this video I make a water resistant glue. Water proof would require Formaldehyde...not something you want to put in your mouth. Examine your task...you want to make a 1-use plastic, it does not need to last for more than 1 hour. Vinegar makes Casein more insoluble. Bioplastics are best suited for 1-use, ideal for tableware. If you need, you can introduce a second step. Coat your plastic with Shellac, then it will last much longer.

Ammonia can be gained cheaply. Obviously water is cheap. Borax is cheap. Buying Casein itself isn't cheap, however you can get milk cheaply and there are common methods to extract the casein. With all this considered, it means you can make decent amount of glue for a very cheap price. Because store bough glue in large quantities, that is water resistant is expensive.
