I'm with you, I just listened to the credit music and stared at the wall beside my monitor for a bit trying to figure it out. Obviously I couldn't. I almost wonder if the writers even had any idea about what they were doing. They just threw a bunch of logic puzzles into the storyline and said, lets mess with these people, and none of it actually makes any sense at all, from a science standpoint.

since comstock was never a infant but booker was, elizabeth had to go back to the moment where comstock would be ''born'' thus drowning booker at the moment of his rebirth during the baptism. in other words comstock died right as he was born (as booker said to smother him in his crib). just to clear that up for people who are still having a little bit of a hard time to wrap their head around this huge mindfuck.

This has also provided a new meaning to what happens, when you die in the game. You open the door, just like in the beginning of the game, and go through the story once again, almost to the point where you'd ve died, but a while earlier. That's why some of your enemies are still alive, and you come out in a slightly different place. Your every death is an ending of one of the Bookers' dimensions, and you just enter another dimension, where you still have a chance to succeed. At least I think so.

I knew Booker was Comstock the very second he killed him and his nose started bleeding; when you kill someone in a different world that is the side effect they feel in every other one. And based on the logic of this game, the ending does make sense. For every universe in which one person is alive, they are dead in another. Even if you kill a baby it would still be alive in another universe because it was already conceived. Think of it as an equation in which something is either 1 or -1; both exist as equal values on their separate scales. If Comstock was never conceived and never existed in one universe, then he is a 0. His non-existence is the same on both sides of the eternal spectrum because there is no negative, or mirror image of nothing.
@GarethLategan
@GarethLategan 9 жыл бұрын
I understand that killing Booker before he can become Comstock means that they cut off that entire branch of possible worlds. But to prevent Comstock from existing Booker can make the choice to not get baptised. That choice creates different worlds where the different choices got carried through. But isn't Deciding to kill Booker also just a choice to prevent Comstock from existing? Wouldn't that mean that there is still a world/worlds where the Elizabeths don't kill him too?
@missinformation5451
@missinformation5451 9 жыл бұрын
Gareth Lategan that's where things get really sketchy... if they are going with the classical theory that every possibility that can exist, does exist then yes there is a world where the exact same thing happened and she decides to not kill him at the end. If that is the case though, there is really no point to stopping Comstock, seeing as there are a seemingly infinite realms and there is no way of erasing him if they are part of the equation. My theory is that since Elizabeth has her special powers she and booker become removed from the equation and are somehow omnipresent in all the universes.
@GarethLategan
@GarethLategan 9 жыл бұрын
Yeah and seeing as a whole bunch of Elizabeths showed up for the 'smothering' it seems like this one decision should affect more than one world
@tsibosp
@tsibosp 9 жыл бұрын
Moses Browning yes and no in my opinion. the video failed to mention that in the scene that Booker drowned there were many Elizabeths not just 1. They did that in order to imply that this universe is connected to the others and Elizabeth now could make this happen cause she got all her powers back. So killing him there in that dimension intervenes with the others. One might argue that the number of Elizabeths was not nearly enough but I think it was a metaphor. No need to show an infinite number of Elizabeths to achieve that.
@SeditiousSpyke
@SeditiousSpyke 9 жыл бұрын
tsibosp Every decision has an infinite number of minute variables that create an infinite amount of possible futures or more realistically speaking do create an infinite branch of new 'verse's' per decision. Taking control of such a moment and forcibly introducing a new choice not normally within the range of choices open to the person making the decision, has an infinitely expanding consequence. Ergo, you kill booker once, you save an infinite number of elizabeths. Realistically speaking this can never be 'actually' resolved as every booker across the infinite span of verse's would need to be smothered in this moment. The point standing here is the paradox of future consequences in past tenses, his choices always lead to a moment where he is smothered and always lead to a future that creates a future where he must be smothered. The ouroboros loop. He lives to die because he must live to die. This details in joyous truth of our current perception of the universe, every choice that can be made already has been made and will continue to be being made forever and we cannot stop it. The underlying message here is the emphasis of 'and we cannot stop it' When he is smothered the elizabeth who smothers him is cancelled out because she cannot now exists to have the urge/reason to smother him , but she contradictory also MUST exist in such a state because she HAS smothered him.

Very very good explanation my friend. I just now completed this game and while I do remember hearing that the game has a "terrible" ending and that Booker dies, I totally did not expect what I just witnessed. Now I understood that Booker and Comstock are technically the same person from two different worlds and that Elizabeth is his daughter, but I didn't realize because of her finger getting cut off that's how she can bend time, nor did I really understand who the Luctessas were and how they played a part in the story or the whole heads and tails part. Thank you so much for explaining that part man, I'm totally going to go back and play this game again so I can earn all the trophies I missed, get the collectibles I missed as well, and maybe understand the story a little better. Wow man, this game has to have one of the most memorable stories I've ever played I don't think any ending has ever shocked me like this one has. It makes you wonder how the developers even came up with this crazy idea. I'm completely blown away.

This allows him to start the infinite loop in an alternate universe in which he never could accept baptism and become Comstock. Therefore he was able to keep his daughter without ever going through the "Bioshock Infinite" story at all.

well, it erases Comstock, because the Luteces said several times that all people live throughout time, not just in specific sections, "Lives, lived, will live", and they also say that in order to completely erase something from the multiverse, it must never exist in the first place. So killing Dewitt before his baptism at the crossroads , since it's a constant and always happens, will nullify the possibility of Comstock ever coming into existence, since every divergent path couldn't exist because the baptism never happened.

@nihs148
@nihs148 8 жыл бұрын
+Doustain This is where they abandon theory and simply go with story lol. If Elizabeth really needed to kill all the Comstocks/Dewitts, she would have to go to all the other multiverses or have them all come to one place. However, instead because Comstock/Dewitt going to the baptism, the second time around, is a constant, it is implied that the Dewitt we are playing as, represents and is all the Comstocks/Dewitts.
@ichrispollitt
@ichrispollitt 8 жыл бұрын
+NiHs yes, because the one we are playing as is the only one with the variable to get to elizabeth again, all the others fail or what not, so if you think that they all die, apart from one, one of them gets elizabeth after passing comstock BUT THEN HE GETS REBIRTHED, so technically in all the universes, where he failed, he never was reborn as comstock, but in the universe where he did succed he became comstock, which is why when he succeded he basicially made everythit fuck up, but that gets to the paradox, comstock would never exist without dewitt but dewitt would never exist without comstock if comstock didnt exist then dewitt would live a normal life

That doesn't actually work though. A lot of the game doesn't quite work. The entire point of the ending is that EVERY Booker is killed across EVERY possible reality, so that Comstock can never exist. There is no reality in which Booker doesn't die at the baptism, so there shouldn't be any reality where he lives happily ever after with Anna, because he ALWAYS drowns to death prior to her birth.

Notice that it's not the same Elizabeth who's drowning you in the end, as the one you played with throughout the game. Look closely at 6:29 and you will see that she doesn't have the bird necklace which our Elizabeth got from the Lutece's at battleship bay. Booker even says "wait. You're not... you're not... who are you?". The question to be drawn is where did Elizabeth go, did she stay at the light house among the sea of doors? Did she find a way to exist outside the space-time contiuum like the Lutece's? Originally I thought that when you killed of the version of booker that came to be Comstock, it would erase all existing universes with Elizabeth too, which is why all those alternative versions of Elizbeth disappear in the end when they kill off Comstock. But the Elizabeth we played with wasn't there.

I replayed this after my first time being when it came out and not understanding anything at the time I tried again this year and I gathered so much more and it has become a top tier game for me. My interpretation that made the most since without creating any theories and following the games rules completely to my understanding. (Also read many thread explanations) note: (if you look at every little detail you will never piece together a solid understanding of this ending i've learned.) Forgive my poor punctuation FOR ELIZABETH I am positive at the end OUR Elizabeth follows you into the door to help with the drowning bc you have to take into account the dev side, a lot of players noted in their playthrough that Elizabeth's necklace would dissapear randomly and many teams on the game had their own share of cutscenes to do with time restraints. It's hard to match and nail everything 100% together and i'm sure they forgot to add her necklace or add a cutscene of her taking it off after going in the door since that no necklace Elizabeth shares way too many similarities to OURS such as the redness on her chest/collarbone and her perfectly placed hair is too much of the same to interpret it as a different Elizabeth. (even in dev interview Ken says if you try to keep peeling the layers it just gets way too complicated / i'm paraphrasing.) Now keep in mind only TWO Elizabeths managed to destroy the spire (old Elizabeth who gives you note and OUR Elizabeth. but old Elizabeth has had way too many fucked up things happen to her from the brainwashing/genocide to get out of her situation instead, she decides to help you save Our girl) but our Elizabeth who wasn't operated on like the old one is like the Luteces now and can jump between tears fully now and somewhat immortal after the spire's destruction which is why at the fade away of the other Elizabeths on piano at the end, OUR Liz doesn't dissapear and it ends on a high note (which symbolizes hope and also a bit of closure). Now in Burial at sea since she's been able to see all the doors of other universes and The memories of all the other Elizabeths only to discover a single Comstock had escaped the purge that had erased all the other Comstocks. (she doesn't go crazy with exploring other universes so don't think she does, she seems to remain in this perfect Paris tear she's created which we see in BAS EP.2) she sees one universe where Comstock failed in obtaining baby anna through the tear and instead gets her head chopped off rather than her pinky, with that guilt Comstock ask Lutece to take him to a world with no Comstock, Dewitt or Anna. Jumping into a universe that is not yours like booker the subject will try to create false memories to peace together their mind just like OUR Booker. so this Comstock lives a few years with not so great memory until Elizabeth goes into this DLC to falsely help Comstock to find sally with revenge in mind which eventually leads to her dying in the first episode to the big daddy after letting it kill Comstock. (revenge complete) In second episode she feels guilt for using Sally to lead up to killing comstock (hence the dark turn showing Sally in her Perfect Paris tear) and decides to go back to that same universe to save Sally and make things right but she is unaware that if she goes back to a universe she died in she loses her tear powers and immortal status and the brother/sister make that apparent in the boat ride where Liz seems not to know about this effect until seeing her dead body after returning to that universe. Liz's memories are now jumbled as well since she doesn't belong there, but as you progress in the game she decides if she has to sacrifice herself to save Sally then the price is worth it. To gift her closure at the ending Elizabeth sees Jack in bioshock 1 (memories rewrite themselves) saving sally so Elizabeth accepts the death from Atlas happily and dies in Sally's arms/hand. (retribution complete) So our Elizabeth ends her story in episode 2 of BAS (even with all that power and potential, revenge eventually simplified her goal and became her downfall) AS FOR BOOKER OUR Booker's story ends in infinite simply. a Commentor made a great interpretaition but I changed it a little to fit my understanding. " OUR Booker was drowned at his baptism by the Elizabeths, but one universe was born from this result. This Booker did not try to return to the baptism (thus, no Comstock or Elizabeths bc of the drowning), but just went home and did whatever brought about Anna. Then he lived his life... until October 8th, the day Anna was taken away. At that point, he remembered everything from his dimension-hopping (memories rewrite themselves, remember) and woke up, and went to see if Anna was gone." Also the Booker in BAS was just created in Elizabeth's head as a gatekeeper for her sanity and for her hidden memory conscious to be revealed to her to know what to say and where to find the ace in the hole. (the devs had to make it apparent somehow and it is expressed in their dialogue in game) I know a lot won't agree probably, but this is the explanation that made the most sense TO ME bc the dev team did not think of every little thing to make it perfect and have the time/power to add every little detail and cutscene and insane quality checks to make everything crystal clear, I would think even they would admit that.

1. Mitch, best explanation on KZbin. The resolution, however, lies in the fact the universes are interconnected at certain points of time. When a variable takes effect in a single universe, new universes were "branched" out given the number of possible outcomes. In the world where Booker accepted baptism, there is only one Comstock in the entire multiverse. With each decision or act that one Comstock makes, he became multiple Comstocks in the new universes created from the probabilites.

In my opinion this ending is legendary, and will be remembered for a very long long time. Bioshock Infinite is not a game that there's some kind of mastermind comes out and explain everything, the only way you can fully understand the story of infinite is by listening/reading all the voxophones, and paying attention to every note that is hidden along the game this is a very clever way to present the game, and makes player smarter when play games.

Booker, who then would take the baptism and be renamed as Comstock. hope i helped

I could be wrong, but this is the way I understood the ending (to answer the last question you posed at the end): The way I imagine the multiverse that Elizabeth describes, is like a tree with all the different variables acting as branches. However, that one baptism is the constant or sort of like the tree stump, where everything is grown from. The reason Booker drowning effects every other multiverse (evidenced by the different Elizabeth’s disappearing with each piano note in the last scene), is because this one point in history is the *source*. It’s this event that causes all those other branches to form based entirely off the yes or no decision Booker has on whether or not to get the baptism.

To better understand the very last scene - including the part most explanations don't fully grasp: Booker has to die, so Comstock never will exist, but NOT in all worlds. He says, they have to go back at the birth of comstock and she brings him to the baptism, where he wonders why they are there again. Then Booker understands, he is who becomes Comstock. But he is NOT drown IN ALL worlds, he is only drown in these worlds he decided to get baptized. That's how the last scene is explained, if Comstock never went after Anna, Booker never sold Anna to Comstock (Columbia never existed and so on) - so she doesn't cease to exist, she just never becomes Elizabeth and simply grows up as Booker's child Anna. Elizabeth ceased to exist too, but not Anna. Anna was taken from half of the worlds where she existed (she never did in Comstock's worlds as he became sterile), so Elizabeth/Anna got actually rescued in all worlds she existed. We see earlier, that there are many Elizabeth and many Bookers moving through many the lighthouses, so they all are gonna do the same, that's how it's explained that all Comstock's are also being taken care of. And Booker at the time earlier at the baptism, has now the knowledge what will happen, NOT DeWitt the false shepherd, but DeWitt the one becoming Comstock (as he says: I'm Comstock) - as we see in an earlier scene, that the memories mixing and decides - and the one becoming Comstock decides at that moment to not become Comstock (they get drowned by Elizabeth). The other half DeWitt go back at their life with Anna (the very last scene). So in the end, neither DeWitt nor Elizabeth(Anna) dies, only Comstock does, all Comstock's.

By killing Boker/Comstock at the baptism, Elizabeth essentially erases herself from existence. Both versions need to exist for her to exist as she knows it. When the siphon was destroyed, she had full control over the tears and over time. She became a fifth dimensional being. She/they killed him/not him before she/they were born.

6:19 I never liked this idea in time travel stories where someone can alter their history and experience the effects on the spot (similar things happen in Back to the Future, called "the ripple effect"). So Elizabeth goes back in time, kills Booker during the baptism, thus eliminating the possibilities of Booker fathering her, and so all the Elizabeth variants despawn on the spot (6:56). But wait, if Elizabeths despawned, how was Booker killed? Bootstrap paradox. In my opinion, killing Booker should prevent *further* Elizabeths from being born down the road, but it should not despawn those that are already there.

Just beat the game 30 minutes ago and I loved the storyline. The moment Anna was pulled through the portal and got her pinkie cut off and him saying “daughter,” it all started to tie together. I think that the Lutece’s coming together to get her back to him was clever and all the hints surrounding it were all very well done. One of the saddest video game endings that can definitely be talked about. Also, when I teleported to rapture, my jaw was dropped the entire time… it is the very first scene where you fall off the ledge. Which I thought was super interesting. To add to all the theories, if Booker really wanted to end all the comstocks, wouldn't he just have to go back and murder his own parents. Comstock was never born like Booker, but Booker is always going to be there. The twins or whatever say to get rid of something in the multiverse, it must have never existed in the first place. If booker killed his parents before they conceived the idea of having him, it would prevent Comstock from being a thing and it would also erase himself. Just a theory tho

The after credit piece is crucial! The baptism is where Comstock was "born". By allowing himself to be drowned in the universe where he accepted the baptism, Booker prevented Comstock from existing in all universes that spawned from that point. That means Comstock never buys Anna from Booker. The post-credit scene implies the existence of a new universe, in which Booker still has his daughter (we're left to assume that he will find some other way to settle his debts)

At the point where Elizabeth drowns Booker/Comstock, the alternate dimensions don't exist yet. The time line splits once Booker is or isn't baptised, creating a timeline where he is Booker DeWitt and one where he is Zachary Hail Comstock. Elizabeth kills him before he makes this decision, thus erasing Booker and Comstock from all timelines from that point on. But also, logically that would mean she erased herself as well.

Well, I'd say the reason for why it affects all parallel worlds that Booker dies is that there's another thing that never has happend before: In all these Parallel Universes, nobody ever has managed to be able to stand "outside" of all these cycles, nobody was ever aware that there was a multitde of them in which the same thing only with variations happend again and again and again, and thus, them being "outside the cycles of fate" it affected all worlds that Booker died. Then again, that leads to the far more interesting questions: "Who created this place in the first place and for what purpose?"
