So, I know this is totally irrelevant now, but I actually wrote the script for this back in 2016 when the Bioshock HD collection was announced, and then I got distracted for about two years.

Progression is pretty straightforward in infinite but the combat encounters do take place in open ended areas kinda like fear or crysis 2 though Fear has more superior level design.

I watched the video again and couldn't help but think that the implementation of things into rapture organically was easy and made sense Colombia is still a thriving city it wouldn't make sense for water mains to be broken or oil spills for most of the game because there are people that fix that. In the later half tho yeah they prob could have implemented it.

The problem with Infinite is that the entire setting makes not a shred of sense for the action. A working, prospering city in which you indiscriminately shoot anyone the game _lets_ you shoot? Yeah, no. That made perfect sense in Rapture - where the game did not _have to_ stop you from shooting anyone you shouldn't! - but Columbia? Give me a break. And don't even get me started on that contrived, half-assed pseudo philosophical ending that - again! - makes not a shred of sense. Never going to replay this, but already played through the first two more than once.

Except... this video deliberately leaves out all of the nuance in every scene/ point it makes against Infinite while trying its hardest to ignore faults in the previous games. It's not exactly the best video to cite. And that's without getting into the fact that "Bioshock infinite sucks/ is overrated" isn't exactly a mind-blowing/ rare opinion. Right now, the bolder move is to defend it.

BioShock 1 is amazing up and until and through the meeting with Andrew Ryan. After that the game fizzles out with a stupid boss fight that undermines and does a HUGE disservice to the character of Frank Fontaine. BioShock infinite definitely made some funky gameplay choices that were a step down from BioShock 1 and 2 I agree. But the story really shines and at no point does it fall flat on its face like the original did. Buuuuuut the correct answer is BioShock 2! Which is the clear masterpiece! With a solid story from start to finish about Collectivism vs. objectivism while ending the Rapture story beautifully. BioShock 2 also takes the gameplay that made the original so great and makes it even better.

I always thought the fact that you could carry all weapons at the same time in Bioshock was a flaw, since it robbed you off the need to strategize because you could just spam all of your ammo. But there should have been some kind of weapon bank system that allowed you to store and retrieve weapons whenever you liked. How Infinite implemented it was stupid. Apart from that, yeah. Columbia seemed like a really good canvas to paint another great game on and the reveal trailer made you feel like that was going to be it. Then it turned out to be just vaguely Bioshock-themed stuff dumped into an environment, without much thought put into how that was going to make a good game.

The BioShock Infinite break point is visibly right after the moment in which Elizabeth is freed. From that point not even the regular interactive elements available in the beginning are scarce. We can see the infinite's downfall. Infinite had OPPORTUNITY and if it was created once more, (or at least if the demo was accessible to the audience) the bad aftertaste would be a bit smaller.

I find this review very biased. I myself played Bioshock Infinite soon after it came out and just finished Bioshock 1 today. I won't give Bioshock 1 any pity points for being old, and I am talking about how it holds up today. Guns & Powers: - Bioshock 1 and Infinite both have boring guns, but I personally think in Infinite they have a slightly better feel to them. - Infinite did Vigors better than B1 did Plasmids. The plasmids always felt dull to me, but Vigors were never boring to use in Infinite. I think that was a huge improvement in making gameplay more fun. Enemies: - Enemies in Bioshock 1 have some justification for their suicidal behavior, but after the first 3 areas the enemies have nothing new to offer, ultimately making the enemies just as boring as in Infinite. Some splicers just run up to you and you can bash their skull in, others might want to run away. Them using medicine is a pretty clever mechanic, but overall didn't really come into play after I realized they can heal up. I found them extremely boring to go up against. Besides Splicers, you have big daddies. Cool introduction, not fun to fight. High damage tanks that you eventually find a way to beat and then you do that for the rest of the game. The game has literally nothing new to offer after the first 3-4 hours of gameplay. Enemies in Infinite on the other hand vary and are more interesting, but definitely not as well implemented into the plot + shooting galleries can get old fast. Atmosphere & Horror: I wasn't intrigued by Rapture. It didn't feel alive to me. The splicers felt like annoyances rather than a horror. Big daddies beat my ass, but after I realized they are passive until provoked, I had nothing to fear. Colombia on the other hand? Definitely didn't feel as well planned out, but man, that place truly immersed me at times... It's hard to explain why I would feel this way though. Elizabeth vs turrets etc: I think Elizabeth's abilities could have been pulled off better, but in general all the hacking and picture taking in Bioshock 1 made me want to die just as much as when Elizabeth's abilities felt useless. Sure there was no innovation, but it's not worse in Infinite, and I also think that the way these abilities work isn't really the same. The realm tears worked really well at times. Now, my biggest issue with this video is the shotgun comparison. Bioshock 1 had you play with all weapons at all times, so it made sense to put a lot more attention to how they worked. The shotgun was also THE ONLY weapon that was implemented in such a clever manner. Infinite never treated the weapons with that much importance. I think this comparison is showing the strength of Bioshock one and comparing it to a weakness in Bioshock Infinite. I personally for example found the way Vigors were introduced much more interesting than plasmids were. Not only that, even Bioshock 1 gave up giving weapons proper introductions after the first few hours, just like how they stopped introducing any new enemies and such. There is obviously bias even in my opinion, but there you go.
@HarbingerOfTruth1
@HarbingerOfTruth1 2 жыл бұрын
Not too long ago I played through the entire series and went ahead and got all achievements possible, so several playthroughs of each of the games on the hardest difficulties. Guns & Powers: You can definitely feel the gunplay in Bioshock 1 is dated, however I still believe the gun system is better implemented in Bioshock 1. First of all the upgrades in bioshock 1 feels much better for two very simple reasons, a clear visual change indicating that you've actually modified your weapon and an impactful boost to the weapons performance alongside it while in infinite you spend some cash and unless it's a damage increase upgrade it's mostly useless. The by far biggest advantage of guns in Bioshock 1 over infinite is that you always have them while in infinite you can only carry two and if you run out of ammo you are forced to change to some shitty gun you most likely don't even want to use, this could be fine if all the guns felt good to use, but when there are certain guns that are clearly superior that is not the case, I don't wish to be stuck with a shitty machine gun. Another thing that makes the gunplay in Bioshock 1 better is different types of ammo for the weapons meaning they can always provide some use, while in infinite you will probably only want to stick with 2 weapons if you can. Although not guns the melee weapon implementation was waaaay better in Bioshock 1 due to one thing in particular, the gene tonics. If you try to go for a melee build in bioshock infinite you will have a bad time until you get charge and even then it's going to be pretty awkward. The executions can be cool and all, but useless in the midst of combat. Now a topic you didn't mention, tonics and gear. Bioshock 1 has just far superior character build customization in every way possible and can allow you to go for specific builds depending on what tonics you choose. On the other hand gear is pretty much just useless for the most part, did you even care to look much at your gear? Most of it are garbage modifiers that are completely useless in combat. If I remember correctly you can have as many as 12 tonic slots compared to bioshock infinites measly 4. Vigors and Plasmids both have the same fault in that there are some that are just straight up more beneficial than the others. The only part of the games where I found the vigors and plasmids to be of most use was in the DLC content, worlds of hurt in Bioshock 1 and clash in the clouds in Bioshock infinite. In the main game they were not of as much use especially in Bioshock infinite if you use a sniper rifle. The environment in Bioshock 1 was better for the use of plasmids, but the effects of infinites vigors were more satisfying to a degree. The main problem for vigors is that you had to spend cash to upgrade them meaning they had to compete with guns for upgrades. One thing that was fucking annoying and massive weakness of the vigors compared to the plasmids is only having two equipped at a time and it being a pain in the ass to switch around while in Bioshock 1 you could bind as many plasmids as you had slots which were much easier to switch around between. Infinite clearly got hurt more by making it playable for console players. Enemies: It's funny because even as drug addicts the splicers act more intelligently than the common soldiers strewn about in infinite. You are damn right the enemies can be and are boring in both games, however bioshock 1 has far better presentation of their enemies and their actions seems to make sense based on their character and nature. What infinite really really lacked was something that indicated soldiers humanity to make you feel some degree of sympathy or restraint towards murdering them, but instead they just appear as mannequins, just another target to shoot at. The splicers would have dialogue and somewhat still seem human, the soldiers in infinite don't really feel human at all. The handyman is way worse than the big daddies, not only do they have a poor introduction as a circus clown, but the encounters are forced down your throat as part of the story which is not fun and rather annoying. Suddenly a Handyman is thrown at you which is far more annoying to fight than a big daddy as with big daddy encounters you can prepare for the fight and start it when you want to. A thing you did not focus on or mention at all is stealth possibilities, basically that doesn't exist in bioshock infinite so what you get in your first fights is what you get for the rest of the game while in Bioshock 1 you have far more optional encounters and ways to handle the encounters. What variations are you talking about? The suicidal fire guys, the raven guys, the patriot or the handyman? The suicidal fire guy and the raven guy is interesting the first time you fight, but that's about it. The only thing good about the patriot is the weapon it drops although because of the shite weapon system of infinite you have to throw it in the bin within the next shooting gallery. Atmosphere: Rapture isn't alive, that's the point. It used to be a bustling place full of energy, but you enter at a point at which it's not. The "horror" elements of the game disappear the second you get a weapon, this is quite common. I have no idea why you'd feel immersed by rapture. I was pulled out of the immersion before getting your weapon. My immersion was already breaking with the cardboard mannequin citizens, but completely broke and stayed broken when you get the prompt as to whether you throw the ball at the couple or at the dumbass. My immersion never recovered from the garbage plot. Never ever write stories using multiverses because they will be filled with more holes than swiss cheese. Although the plot of Bioshock 1 wasn't the best either the ending was wholesome if you got the good ending, while bioshock infinite doesn't even have multiple endings despite their being an infinite amount of possible endings technically due to the plot. Bioshock Infinite might have the worst story I've ever played through including games that do not inherently have a story at all. Elizabeth vs turrets etc: The tears were useless for the most part, you only open the tears that you are forced to and the tears for ammo, health and salts. The turret tears are useless on higher difficulties and will instantly be destroyed. Hacking turrets was far more useful than Elizabeths tears imo although obviously not if you get hurt in the process of doing so, although hacking drones and cameras were even better for going through same zones again when enemies respawn. I agree the picture taking in bioshock was annoying, but it provided great bonuses and was not particularly hard to do although it was a pain in the ass. The tears never really worked well at all, in fact it is more annoying that you are forced to open a tear for something that normally would be there naturally in any other game, so you'd essentially choose what you want instead of getting it all. Clash in the clouds was the best part of infinite for me which should tell you what I think about that garbage story.
@WhiteZet1
@WhiteZet1 2 жыл бұрын
@@HarbingerOfTruth1 Guns & Powers: Can't speak too much on which game pulled what off better. I played both bs1&infinite only once (dlc not included) and both at different times. Both had aspects I liked and disliked. Can't even remember what the tonics or gears did. Enemies: You can say that Bioshock 1 had better enemies, but I still think it could've had more variety. Though with how much combat Infinite had, I suppose even that game should've had more enemies... Or less combat. Infinite felt very mentally taxing with how much combat it had. Atmosphere: I think you can be immersed in a "dead" place if it's pulled off properly. In Bioshock 1's case the fact that the game is old by now may prove a problem, but I'm not sure what the problem exactly was. From recent titles I could mention Prey as an immersive game where the world is dead. Or actually even System Shock 2, which I think pulls off the atmosphere and horror better than bioshock 1 despite it's age. Soma was also really immersive. Both System Shock 2 and Prey even gave you weapons but I think the horror aspect stayed. Perhaps you and I have a different idea of immersion, not sure? Elizabeth vs turrets etc: As I mentioned in 1st comment, I found tears bad and hacking extremely boring. Both games had a mechanic I didn't like. Other one was useless, other one was boring. Gotta say though, I was never too bothered by the story in Infinite. I think the ideas were good but the end product definitely could've been better. Bioshock 1 had less going on which is why I think it was hard to fuck it up in the ways infinite did.

The only things i liked about the game was the designs for the tougher enemies like the firemen, the raven..poeple, the handyman and the patriots. Also liked that it took place in the sky, literally no one has done that before and the vigors, cuss they have great icons, the bottles look amazing and some power were unique, like possesion, undertow, murder of crows ( i guess) return to sender, and i guess devil's kiss cuss in the other games you basically have fire in your hands, in infinite you basically have a magma ball. The story for me was, like most, confusing until i checked those "the full story of bioshock" videos..i mean i did like what happen before infinite and that's sorta about it. Making my way through all your videos. Love 'em, bud. BTW I only used the sniper rifle and the rocket launcher for the *entire* playthrough of Bioshock: Infinite. None of the enemies ever had the ammo for them... but I literally never ran out because whenever I'd get low, Elizabeth would pull some more out of her interdimensional ass. The game never wanted me to run out of ammo, which was weird. It was only ever a problem when there was that section near the end of the game when you're separated from Elizabeth. Then I ran out of ammo and there weren't any weapons for me to pick-up, so I actually hit a brick wall and couldn't continue at all. I tried to just zerg rush with my face and punch people to death all out of ammo, but I think I had to end up loading an earlier save and grab a different gun for that tiny section. Then once I got Elizabeth back it was back to only sniper rifle and rocket launcher. Game of the Year game design.

Bioshock Infinite is so underwhelming for me someone who only played the series this year. It's the most combat oriented game in the series yet it has the worst combat. Yea totally dropped the ball there. That reminds me I really hate the two weapon restrictions. To me that only works in Halo. The story is so boring. No character in the game is likeable to me either. New Columbia doesn't hold a candle to to Rapture. It looks far less interesting and it makes no sense in it's game world. Booker kept asking what the deal was with a floating and we never get an answer. The ending was perhaps the worst game ending I ever seen. Yes I played Mass Effect 3. At least that ended things and didn't leave on a cliffhanger. One that will likely never be saved. Poor cliffhanger (if you get that reference.)

To be fair you did seem a little biased against infinite and this video felt more like a "Why Bioshock Infinite Sucks" rather than what the title actually says, personally I disagree completely, I prefer Bioshock infinite the most out of the main games and Bioshock 1 the least as I feel that combat is the strongest and the series and has some pretty great characters and setting

This is a very well edited video, and i do respect your opinion, but i disagree with you, Bioshock infinite is my favorite of the 3. First lets talk gameplay, Infinite has my favorite gameplay of the 3, the shooting mechanics just feel better and smoother, And the map design feels more open rather than in rapture where it all feels very small, And i don't mind the 2 weapon limit, mainly because i used also used like 2 weapons in the previous 2 games. And the story was SO much better than i expected, Throughout the game you are shown one side of the story until right at the end when they show you the full picture, its brilliant! Bioshock 1's story was also good, the would you kindly moment is one of the best scenes in all 3 bioshocks, but as i whole, i prefer infinite's story. but thats just my opinion.

bioshock infinte is the opposite of bioshock 1 in 1 the city is under the water, in infinte the city is in the sky, in 1 the game is very hard, in infinte the game is so easy, in 1 it's very hard to get bullets, in infinte it's very easy to get bullets, to summarize if you liked bioshock 1 you will hate infinte and vice versa, for me I think bioshock 1 is not a bad game but infinte is 1000% better than bioshock 1.

You're making a bad comparison by equating Elizabeth's Tear power to the original powers. They're completely different ideas. The original idea was that they would be extensions of the Vigors that would grow weaker as you used them. The final idea was that she would summon new items to change up the battle. Ultimately, it comes down to preference. There is no way you can make an objective critique by whining about the change, especially when that change was advertised barely a couple years later. Further, YES, Bioshock DID have environmental tools. The difference is that you could have ALL of those tools at once. Infinite wants you to choose, so as to change your playstyle throughout the battle. 4:20 Infinite greatly improved the combat. It didn't complete revolutionize it, but it made it feel better, from improving the weapons (say what you will about the upgrades) to making the powers actually feel like you could use them in combat. Further, it placed more focus on the present of the battle (in contrast to the previous 2 where the focus was on preparation, but when the battle began it was just shooting) and encouraging the players to stay on the move, unlike a lot of other shooters, which inspire staying in cover most of the time. 4:30 Sigh... You'd think, FIVE YEARS after the game's release, people would understand this. 1.) Your compliant is DELIBERATE. Infinite is a sequel commentary. It's critiquing games that feel the need to imitate their predecessors without doing anything new. You can see this through the fact that the fame directly imitates the original Bioshock's story (the Lighthouse, the confrontation with Comstock, Songbird v. Big Daddy, etc). By having the Vigors in here for no real reason, the game is showing us a warning. This is further emphasized by all the anachronisms. You see countless songs and works of art in this world that just DO NOT belong here. That is the POINT. Nothing in this world belongs here. It was all stolen from other worlds. 2.) There are references/ allusions to the Vigors. First, you can overhear citizens talking about the Vigors early on, with them saying that they don't want to try them until Fink works out the kinks. Second, you see Fink advertizing Shock Jockey as a necessity to use some of his machines. 3.) The police do use the Vigors, but only a few. Most likely because of a difference of skill and bravery. 5:26 They DO MOVE! I've played the game dozens of times, and this claim that the enemies stay still is an ABSOLUTE LIE. They will constantly move from one place to another, while also diving to avoid your shots. Additionally, the reason they continue to fight is because they're religious zealots working under a despot. Early on the game, you find a Voxophone of a soldier expressing stress over her potential failure and the consequences. 6:15 That's manipulative. When we first see the Big Daddy, that is NOT the scene. It's when he's hovering over the Little Sister examining your corpse. Much like the BD, The Handyman gets action later via a cutscene of him throwing Booker over the ledge. Stop lying. 6:45 Let me guess, you like fall damage, too, don't you? Sometimes you have to get rid of things like this so as to prevent frustration. Too much realism can be bad. 6:53 1.) Infinite is not a puzzle game. We shouldn't be expecting that form it. 2.) That's to emphasize and implication about this Booker being 122 as opposed to 123. 7:15 And this is where I lose respect for you and this video. Look, if you're just going to use Mathew Matosis' argument, at least have the intellectual honesty to ADMIT that you took it from him. Using this argument, virtually verbatim, as if it were your own is sleazy and unintelligent. Now, to address the concern. The point of this scene IS NOT to aim. It is to CHOOSE. It is to emphasize the fact that, no matter what you choose, you still get caught. You can't make that as obvious without making it a choice. Further, you just dumbed down that entire scene. Booker is trying to keep a low profile so that he can take Elizabeth. If he threw at Fink, he'd be caught. This is the same situation as the LIttle Sister, which you praised MOMENTS afterward. The question isn't "Be racist or anti-racist?" The question is "Should I help these people and jeopardize myself? Or play along so that my plan goes smoothly." STOP BEING DISHONEST. 8:21 Bioshock 2 gives no nuance here. It provides us with cookie-cut-out characters, one generical good, one genericaly bad, and one a Sander Cohen knock off, and says "Kill - BAD, Spare - GOOD." 8:47 1.) Your complaint is the EXACT SAME THING we got out of Bioshock 2, except Infinite isn't guilty here. 2.) The situation isn't as "GOOD v. BAD" as you're making it out to be. Slate makes it clear that he wants you to kill him, while Booker hates what Slate is putting him through. By sparing him, you will be punishing him (something that is made clear after you make your choice). The question is, "Do I want to give Slate what he wants? Or do I want to get back at him?" Again, you are being DISHONEST. 9:23 "Skylines" Yeah. They go in circles. As opposed to??? What kind of railing DOESN'T go in circles? And on. You CAN do stuff with them> you can use Skyline Strikes to kill enemies (one shot, most of the time), utilize Skyline specific Gear to play in different ways, move to a different area of the map for safety/ more resources/ a better view of what's going on, and you can shoot from them. Again, stop dumbing down the situation. Respawns. Yes, the only punishment for death is losing money. What was your punishment for death in the original Bioshock again? Oh yeah. NOTHING. Bioshock is worse in this area, ADMIT IT. At least here, you run the risk of losing upgrades when you die. Trash. Booker is broke, and he's enemy number one. Move on to a new topic instead of regurgitating cliche arguments that no one ever thought too hard about. The Ending. The Ending was left DELIBERATELY open to interpretation. You CANNOT say, "The ending doesn't work because..." as there is no accurate interpretation. All you're doing is debunking an interpretation. The Ending can still work with the assumption that her plan doesn't work. I've never heard of you before and, quite honestly, I will never watch any of your videos after this. All you did was deliberately misrepresent the games to make BS1 and 2 look better and Infinite look worse, steal arguments from other critics, and pander to the Infinite-hate mob. By god, this was a bad video.

I’m not going to lie, I had some similar issues with this video. This was a predictable and half ass video, that ripped off popular videos shitting on this game. I also agree the combat in Infinite is a big improvement, I think only players with a poor play style can’t acknowledge this. Overall Bioshock Infinite is honestly not a bad game at all, just far from perfect (like the original was) and that’s okay.

Wow, this comment picked the video apart better than I ever could. Been a couple of years since I played Infinite and I definitely didn't remember all the scenes from Bioshock one. Only thing I realized you missed was comparing how you found the shotgun in Bioshock one compared to the one in Infinite. Comparing one games strength to one's weakness. Similar could have been if we compared getting a cool Vigor in Infinite to buying a plasmid from a vending machine in Bioshock one. Truly pissed me off, couldn't be the only one?

How is Alexander Gilbert a Sander Cohen clone? because he electrocutes people? I feel like the kill/spare choice with Gilbert was on the same level if not better than the one with Slate. Similar to slate you have the choice of killing him as kindness or leave him to suffer his insanity which would be poetic justice for all the Big Daddies that were condemned to insanity from his pair bonding experiments. However unlike Slate the insane Gilbert pleads for his life so even if the player wants to spare him there is the question of whether sparing him means following the wishes of a Gilbert's past self recordings or the Gilbert as he is in front of you. I agree this is a horrible critique of Infinite but I have to say Infinite is inherently flawed as it's called "BioShock" and shows you this amazing city only to give you a limit on how many guns you can carry and force you into a series of arena fights where exploration is limited to finding lock picks so you can get some extra money and a stat upgrade.
