wow what a bad take. I respect the opinion, defiantly a bold one, but take into account when this was made. definitely revolutionary for the time and the story is awesome. listening to the audios is always fun and the lore is deep.

@twopennygames That makes the take even worse. Compared to games released that same year BioShock had better storytelling, compelling graphics, great artistic design, good controls and extremely well written dialogue. You might just not be a dialogue person.

@@MrAv3rag3 This is not true at all. and i said the dialogue is very well written. The Character journey is not. Also this is far from the first game to tell a story without cutscenes, Half-Life exists

insanity. if you didnt like it thats fine but in no way, shape or form was it overrated, the gameplay is a little rusty sure but the environment, story, characters and soundtrack is incredible. its still one of the best games of all time. now if you want to talk about overrated lets talk bioshock infinite.

wholeheartedly agree with the title. the only thing this game does good is art design and visuals in general. the shooter itself was subpar even for its time (played it on release btw), dumbed down/simplified imsim elements might as well not exist, "karma" system is safe and broken (if you get more adam for doing good things what's the point of bad choices at all), pisspoor handling of narrative themes with a mid plot, the twist is not a twist at all and doesn't make sense as a meta reference (the "you're like a player!" thing only works if you aren't forced to obey the mission popups for the whole second part of the game), etc, etc. it's not a bad game but it is very much mid and highly overrated. it certainly tries to do some new things but most of them do not stick the landing which becomes evident if you rate not their mere appearances but an actual implementation and realization in the gameplay.

Combat felt clunky and lacked even the snap and the punch of Half-Life 1996 or perhaps even Unreal 1. Enemies had HP bars which broke immersion and were massive damage sponges. Moral posturing pretending to be intellectual. Hey guys it's the 1930s did you know that EUGENICS is bad? Wow so fresh. Couldn't get into it at all. Inb4 I'm not a real gamer or just cannot play innovative stealth, sci-horror, or appreciate technically impressive action games which require applying your brain. I was able to play through the entirety of both Looking Glass "Thief" games, both Dishonoreds, Deus Ex 1 and 2 (yes the actual DX2), Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Soldier of Fortune, Hitman Codename 47, Hitman 2, Hitman Blood Money, Beyond Good & Evil, Morrowind, Dead Space, Wolfenstein remake plus the original on ROM from the 90s, Doom remake plus the original from 1993, Abe's Oddysee, Severance: Blade of Darkness, Dark Messiah, Quake 2, DUSK on ultra hard, Velvet Assassin, RE2, 4, 5, and even the terrible 6,... Jedi Academy. Operation Flashpoint, Rainbow Six. There is hardly any innovative comparative game from a similar era that I've dumped, but I dumped Bioshock. Let's be straight: apart from its water animation, Bioshock was NOT innovative.

Wow. Never heard a worse take in videogames in my life. Bioshock was a revolutionary game, one of the greatest and influencial of all time. It managed to tell a compelling story through the world and gameplay rather than cutscenes. The world of bioshock is one of, if not THE greatest created. Gameplay wise I think you are comparing a 2007 game to modern standards. This game is 18 years old!! Even things like the environment interacting with your plasmids such has lighting oil with fire and electricuting water was a brand new ideas in games (dark messiah of might and magic is the only one i can think of which did similar things before bioshock). It also did something which movies and books do well, but videogames rarely can. The story of bioshock isnt really about the story you are playing. Its a critique of the ideas and philosophies of Ayn Rand and Objectivism, some of the most pervasive in modern right wing politics. Its a left wing answer to the story of Atlas Shrugged. With what Ken Levine thinks would really happen if that story was to happen.

The modern standard take is bullshit there were tons of games from and before that had better gameplay systems than Bioshock, Dead Space, RE4, Borderlands, Rage, all had better more satisfying gameplay.

Yeah honestly BioShock is the worst game made by irrational games. Tribes vengeance is the true underrated Irrational games product. No further questions your honor. (Come play tribes nerds)

Played the game and it felt very underwhelming. Although discerning whether it be my own incompatibility with the product or the product itself is something I’m unclear about. I hated the environmental “storytelling”, seeing as it's drawn from the disconnect between game and story logic. The mute protagonist also suffers from a similar issue, although I do believe my issues with him stem from a rejection of the very idea it’s based upon.
