Yeah the updated lighting does not work well with the transparent textures from the original game. You can see this in the water puddles as well. Almost like the transparency is completely lost.

Okay I have several issues here with the remaster... They took out the grittiness of the metal and completely took away most of the reflectiveness of various physical surfaces like tables and counters, and even the floors. The splicers look too smooth and their outfits look like they just got put on this morning rather than being raggedy and torn apart to look old and rotting; the woman standing over the baby carriage looks like a zombie put on a clean nurse's outfit rather than looking like she became a splicer over a long period of time to the point that her clothes are rotting just as much as her body is. Water and oil spots on the floors don't reflect properly, and in one of the early rooms it makes the puddle just look like badly-rendered wine, and the blood-spattered signs and posters just look like a child just threw red paint on them instead of looking like actual blood. The marine life in the ocean looks more cartoonish, like they got added in post rather than being rendered in those areas, like the whale at the beginning looks like something from a PS2 game now rather than looking like a realistic Humpback like it did in the original. Admittedly, most of the polygons are legitimately smoother, there isn't a weird kind of hazy sheen everywhere, the shadows and lighting are actually a bit smoother and look more like they're from a real light source, and a lot of the other texture details are a bit more high-def. But these updates aren't enough to compensate for what was taken away.

I'm pretty disappointed about 2:54; why remove the splicer mask in the remaster? It takes away the majority of the unease felt in that situation. I don't know, man. I can really appreciate some aspects of this remaster (the reflections of the water on the walls in 2:13 and the added plant life throughout the ocean is kewl), but others seem to take away from the overall dark, moody feel of the game. Like another commenter stated, this just makes me appreciate the original all the more. It's such a beautifully done game through and through, especially for its time.

Why are people calling it a cash grab? This is mostly for those who never experienced Bioshock before and would like a bit of an update to it. Also, the PC version is free for those who own it, so yet again, why complain? If people wanted to play bioshock they would've gotten the game long ago, seeing as a large amount of people who have an xbone and ps4 had a ps3 and 360. This remaster is pretty disappointing when they take out quite a bit of options in the first place. In the 6-9 years since the first 2 bioshock games came out, leaving almost every bug and changing the graphics only a small amount is like getting spat on. "It's for those that never experienced Bioshock before and would like a bit of an update" The keywords here are "a bit of an update", this update makes this game look damn near the same as the original. Sure PC gets it for free if they owned it before, but console has to pay $60 for every game that they could've(probably have) made backwards compatible. Sure I'm a die-hard bioshock fan, I'm happy that I got it for free on PC and still have the original copies on disc, but I was hoping for at least a good graphic update, something that'd make me go "Holy shit I've never seen rapture look so good", rather than a graphic update that makes me squint to see the changes.

I really agree with this. While they have updated the overall textures on everything, put extra light effects, added extra worn down features, and made the ocean more vibrant with life, it seems that they've actually downgraded the reflection and overall shading quality. Just by looking at that one scene where the blood was splattered, it made the original actually look better than the remastered for a short moment.

The real and obvious difference is poly count and overall tessellation which is a huge deal considering that Bioshock's art style borrows a lot from Art Deco which uses a lot of round corners and soft edges, especially on appliances and furnitures. There's also a few other improvements but the fact they left the aesthetics unchanged for the most part makes these improvements really subtle. Texture is more detailed due to higher poly models and shaders (Probably using a shader closer to PBR standards), the particle effects such as mist and water streams are a lot more detailed, the subtle depth of field on Infinite is used here, and shadows are a lot deeper.

I'm glad that these remastered games are being released for consoles. This way, those who don't have a powerful PC for whatever reason, can enjoy the games as they were meant to be enjoyed. I'm very fortunate to have played this game on my PC with full graphics cranked up at 4k resolution. BTW, this is not "remastered", it's misleading. It's really a "Definitive Edition", but not remastered. The previous consoles just couldn't handle the game as originally intended, so the graphics were just significantly reduced along with the resolution on those consoles. It's just now being re-released with the original graphics, not "remastered". The reason I say this is because it looks just like the PC version. Just add a starfish here and there. In many cases, the PC version still looks crisper and cleaner, as well as the other way around, but point being, it's NOT a "remastered". It's a re-release or "Definitive Edition". Remastered games have had very significant additions in graphics and textures. Look at Halo Master Chief Collection, Duck Tales Remastered and even Metro Redux. THOSE are REMASTERED. The Last of Us should have also been named Definitive, but not Remastered. Happy gaming guys :)

Metro 2033 was a complete overhaul using the last light engine. An HD remaster is what this is. But they didn't just boost it to 1080p 60fps. They added a lot of detail, improved the lighting, water, and overall atmosphere. If you can't tell the difference or don't think it's a good remaster, then cool for you. The plasmids are on ONE hand, and the weapons in the OTHER. So how do we do this....? Oh I know we'll have a slow swap between them, like a man needs to unholster his own hands. Of course they fixed it in Bioshock 2, left buttons shoots a gun, right button uses a plasmid. But how hard was it to get right? How easy, between two methods, to implement the wrong one, and have nobody during testing or anything raising their hand? They're probably a lovely bunch of folk to work with, but to let this one slip, and not get picked up on... You could say it was a deliberate decision, but if you asked players, I bet most of them would say it was the wrong one.

At 1:12 the way they made the letters in the film projector look more focused and shaper in the remastered really bugs me for some reason... Because Rapture was established in 1946 and the construction finished at 1951s meaning image would still blur and unfocusing at times and not look sharp which the original bioshock would do. I’ve played the original bioshock and the remastered version and while the remastered version is a slight improvement (beside the pc issue and bugs) with the graphics and models and texture and particles I’d say it’s worth a try as a person who just got into the bioshock series 3 years ago and not a long time fan who defends to it to his last breath.

I honestly think original is better - they used hardware limitations to an advantage perfectly (point reflections, shadows, dark areas, smoke) and it simply follows the original vision better - just look at tower, entrance to Rapture (moon illumination) and plenty of other locations in the vid. Remake just kinda teared this art layer off.

Loving the water reflections on the wall at 2.05 to 2.15. Lots of noticeable subtle changes and I'm viewing it through my phone. Can't wait to return to rapture, it's been to long.

Some parts look better on PC and some parts look better on the PS4 remaster. Either this is not a good remaster (in terms of looking better than its counterpart in every single way), or that the PS4 doesn't have enough power to handle a complete remaster (meaning that while there are some improvements, it seems like other aspects look better on PC like the blood splatter, some of the lighting in the environment and overall sharpness). In any case, this remaster seems to include a slight visual upgrade with some improvement in textures, water reflections and adding more detail into the environment, but, it's main purpose is so that it can be played on the newer consoles for people that have never played them before or want to own them for their new systems. So if you've played the games before on PC you're not missing out on much.

I think a lot of guys are sort of missing the point, this is a remaster, not a full-on remake, which means its a port of the original to newer consoles (with slight changes to it's visuals)

It's more or less a primary port to "Next-gen" consoles, they've added new Higher Resolution textures, Assets (walls, objects, clutter, etc), Lighting, Shaders, and probably other stuff. PC is getting this for free, if you owned the older versions of course. Consoles aren't, probably because they're actually getting a slightly newer experience from what was given years back, i don't 100% agree with them charging full price, but i can see Content wise it's a good deal and that this is also a business decision were talking about. Bioshock 1 will get new assets, graphics, etc; Bioshock 2 will get some new assets, HD textures, and effect improvements; Bioshock: Infinite will run fully maxed out at 1080p60fps with all the DLC for all the games included for a pretty standard retail price. I'm sure if it was any other company, they would probably charge a lot more. I would agree that this is an absurd lazy port for PC owners (except for BS:1), seeing their isn't much changing to your perspective or the games themselves, so that's probably why its free for the owners on PC. But to console gamers, it's a huge improvement to the whole experience, thus the Collection, and it's a pretty good deal at that. All games Remastered/Graphically improved with all the DLC for the price of just one Game, the sales pitch just screams consoles.

Well... This is disappointing. Most of the changes actually looked BETTER in the original, and fit the setting better. They removed a lot of the worn textures (the ones that were crucial to making it actually look like an abandoned, decaying city), the new blood looked painfully cartoonish, and they made the lighting far worse in many areas. Pretty much the only changes that don't feel like a direct downgrade are the ones that are barely (if at all) noticeable. I'll still be playing this, since it's being given to me for free (and it will likely include achievements... Something that SHOULD have been in the original version), but I can't say I'm not extremely disappointed. I'd been very excited for this.

Real blood doesn't look like shiny, whitish plastic. It's dark, in large quantities almost black. Raise your hand if you watched a friend commit suicide and have seen a huge quantity of blood. Yeah, that's what I thought. It doesn't look like shiny glossy plastic. It looks like spilled port wine, and it's dull, not glossy. I'm just going to assume that they've made new textures w/ higher resolution, written more instructions to their lighting component, added higher particle counts, crisper shadows, better water reflections, etc and point out some major areas. I just skipped a few of the scenes due to redundancy. 0:09 - More shader instructions to the particle FX. Better 0:30 - Entire cabin remodeled with modern day low-poly count, higher resolution textures, new animation w/ same hand model. 0:49 - Just more fog particles with zero light diffusion.(More shader instructions) 0:56 - Low level cloth physics 1:07 - See 0:49 1:12 - Higher texture resolution with cleaner text and less grunge 1:26 - Plant life and remodel of the statue. 2:05 - Mm, baby. Fake Perlin Noise Water caustic reflections. 2:53 - Either more information in the animation or the original had a cap of 30 fps. 3:01 - Fake light shafts( It's not new. I just thought I'd point it out.) 3:46 - Nail polish and instead of blood? Doesn't look up-to-date, but hell. It's Bioshock so I'm pretty sure people will appreciate the remaster. Still, I feel like they missed a huge chance to really spruce up that entry to the underwater section and snag people's attention.

Yeah but my initial comment wasn't entirely accurate. There will be free upgrades for BioShock 1 and BioShock 2. If you own either, you can get the upgrade for the corresponding game. Infinite doesn't have an upgraded version on PC, but the original will be included if you buy all three games in The Collection from the Steam store.

The Collection will still be sold on Steam which contains all 3 games and DLC (BioShock Updated, BioShock 2 Updated, and BioShock Infinite). You will only receive free updates for the first two games if you own them on Steam. So if you want the Collection, you will have to either buy all 3 BioShock games, or buy the Collection when it comes out.

The people getting mad are comparing it too much to the original. Think of it on it's own. Playing the remastered on the PS4 in 1080p, running at 60fps with the more polished look that stands up with next gen graphics. It's beautifully done. You won't have a image of the original next to your screen as you play to compare and scrutinize the subtle nuances of what texture you preferred. If this game came out today as the remastered version, no one would be complaining about the graphics.

I think you are missing the point, the whole purpose of a remaster is to take the artistic direction of the original game and recreate it in higher fidelity, building on its legacy. while there are many things to appreciate in the remaster, the problem some people have is how certain choices made to various visual elements of the game take a step backwards in terms of artistic direction, which, in a game like bioshock is what made it look so good for a game of its time. this is why in a remaster, graphically, people expect this philosophy of great artistic direction to be followed with great care as the visual world building is some of the best in gaming. however, many people, myself included feel it does a poor job at doing this. im not mad, its just a shame.

Why is it that 80% of these feel like they are flipped around? LikeLike, many of these "remastered" scenes look much, much worse except some random bit like cloth flapping about. Liek the water 2:33 to 2:50 look absolutely horrendous in the remaster. To be fair, gamespot is comparing the original PC version with a console version so the console definitely have some downgrading going on.

I think that the remastered just makes things look brighter in some areas but for the most part it looks the same just a different texture, but i think its still worth to buy, because i love this game its story is great, and i don't care about remastered graphics, as long as the game doesn't look like golden eye 64, then were good.
