Really love this game. Just starts making less fun when you have to change into a big daddy. Love the crossbow and it's trapwire. And the invisible perk. Make a big daddy run after you. Than run around the corner and stand still. So he can't find you.

While there was no significant mechanical or gameplay impact from saving or harvesting the Little Sisters, it did not feel underwhelming to me when you get the good ending and see the impact you had on their lives. One of my favorite endings to a game ever. Not to mention saving these children were little bright spots in an otherwise grim world. Also there's the role playing aspect; you can look at harvesting or rescuing from a purely mechanical point of view, or look it as you're making a moral choice to sacrifice or not an innocent child. And that moral choice is reflected in the ending you get.
@mhjmstultiens

I was thinking the same thing. Not everyone tries both endings to see what's different. In the end it doesn't matter; great game nonetheless. :)

@@Schizm1 I kind of get people's gripes with it even though it's personally my favorite. When they were showing off the game a couple years before it released they showed telekinesis as being like one of the main abilities that you'd be using. They made it seem like you were going to have a lot more traversal options and it was going to be more free form in it's environmental traversal. Basically just a bunch of promises that never came to fruition in the final game. I still think the end product was amazing but it was just a case of promising too much and delivering really at the end of the day not a whole lot of it.

5:37 To add to that: Bioshock has more of an inverted difficulty curve. The initial levels, on Survivor in particular, tend to be the hardest or most challenging, because your arsenal is still very limited. The more weapons, upgrades and plasmids you find, the easier it gets to respond effectively to anything the game throws at you. Meaning that even on Survivor, the final levels aren't too much of a problem, even if you deactivate the revive mechanic.

Good video! About the differences you get depending on how you decide to deal wth the Sisters, there's one plasmid called Hypnotize Big Daddy which may change a good chunck of how you deal with those Biggies. As a player who every now and then decides to go back to BioShock, I do believe a good way to experience the game, even on a first playthrough, is by playing the game on the hardest difficulty with Vita Chambers disbled. I do feel like NG+, as fun as it is, removes a lot of the tension you get, especially early on.

The only real downside to the Bioshock games in my experience is that even on the hardest difficulties, the beginning of the games(first 20% or so) is the only section that feels truly challenging. Maybe Infinite is different, I never played 1999 mode, but played Burial at Sea on the hardest difficulty. While it was a significant challenge, I honestly hated the way it was designed. The entire reason it was difficult was purely due to lack of resources and not very much to do with level design or enemy placement, etc. There are some minor shortcomings like you mentioned with the choices yielding different endings and having little impact outside of that, but Bioshock is definitely a classic and deserves to be mentioned in high regard. Glad you liked it, thanks for the review.

Hey Mortim, long time fan first time caller. I really enjoy a lot of the videos. It's hilariously serendipitous that you decided to 100% this 15 years old game. Bc I would always hear about BioShock and never played it myself. Saw it on sale for the remastered collection for $8-9 and literally finished it last night. Though I didn't 100% it, I do feel I've got all I could gather from it. And Overall I can definitely see how appreciated it could be for it's time in '07-'08.

The story is well enough with a bait and switch. But they do a phenomenal job of setting the scene. As the world feels believable even though it's quite ridiculous. The gameplay(for it's time) still holds up well enough, there's no real weight to combat, and depending on how you want to play you can definitely be overpowered in most encounters. As for the final Fontaine fight I went into it nearly fully stocked and finished him with tons of ammo and health/hypos left. I was kinda expecting more for the final boss.

You said it yourself at the beginning when you spoke about "impact". There are games I myself am reluctant to play today that at release were regarded by those playing it then among the best games ever made. Time isn't always kind, especially to certain types of games. When Bioshock originally released it had a massive influence on me as a gamer. The issue with this particular game is, there are aspects of it that, lets say haven't aged like a fine wine. That said, for a game that is 16 years old - it holds it's own. Still, it would be a disservice to the game to not reiterate how impactful it was to me when it released. I wish you could have played it then. Although I have no intention of going back to play it any time soon, it stands as one of my favourite gaming experiences.

Maybe the game would have had more impact on the player 16 years ago, although a bigger screen is not to be underestimated. I found especially the atmosphere very thrilling and was constantly feeling uneasy. The first times a big daddy charged at me I freaked out, panicked, and died... Nowadays some gameplay and combat designs have evolved, but I still think the whole package is worthwhile playing. And it not only has been a milestone in creativity 16 years ago, but is IMHO still above average compared to quite a few modern AAA titles.

I agree with a lot of this. Having just played Bioshock for the first time in 2024, I think all the praise about the atmosphere is well deserved. Rapture is still a great setting in 2024. I thought the story was good but not nearly as good as I was expecting it to be. Unless you're willing to experiment with all the tonics and weapons to keep things interesting, the combat gets repetitive quickly. Bioshock is pretty clunky to play compared to modern titles, but it's still worth checking out to experience Rapture. I had a much better time with Infinite because I liked the world more and it has many quality of life improvements over the first game.

I didn't know until a few weeks ago that Armin Shimerman (DS9's Quark himself, and a classy gentleman) voiced Andrew Ryan in Bioshock. And, as a side note, the voice of Atlas throughout most of the game sounds very, very authentically Irish - specifically, like a West Dublin accent, which perhaps Colin Farrell should sound like from the Castleknock/Blanchardstown area... Great game, but it was lightning in a bottle.

This is one of the few games that allow you to use some "ambient elemental interactions". The other games that comes to my mind that have that feature are Divinity original sin 1/2 and Dark messiah of might and magic and in some extend also the old system shock 2 and the other Arkane games like Prey and Dishonored. It's a shame that a lot of modern game doesn't have any kind of environment interactions. I din't play Bioshock 2, but i remember that Bioshock infinite was a bit disappointing.

Even back in 2007, the combat felt clunky and mostly disappointing. That aside, where the game excels and is most worthwhile is in its unique setting, atmosphere and the twists and turns of the story. For that alone, I consider it still worth playing today, although I typically recommend setting the difficulty to Easy to make the enemies less damage-spongey and thus make the lackluster combat feel like less of a slog.

In Bioshock, You Feel Underpowered Because You Play As Jack A Normal Human. But Soon As You Get All The Upgrades, Enough Research, And Plasmids You Might Conquer Rapture, Save/Harvest All Little Sisters And Replenish It From Drug Addicts.

Bioshock 2 was the first one I played and I still feel it's the superior game.

When you do the hardest difficulty on Bioshock infinite make sure you stockpile a shit ton of ammo for the late mid game. I'm not joking you you can get soft locked and it will be a shitty time.

Just my opionion/idea but I'd love it if you could add in a small section on how attainable/inconvenient getting the 100% achievements are for each review. I'm sure a lot of people who watch your videos are completionists (like me) and some games I'd like to know how much of a grind the 100% would be. Sometimes even 1 achievement can add hours and hours

I still haven't bought and played this game as I was a bit in doubt and other games keep popping up distracting me; but this review *might* have changed my mind about that when I see it discounted at the next Steam sales ;)

I was really disappointed with the lack of difference on save/harvest. Massive lost opportunity to give practical consequences. Also really should visit the DLC for Infinite, I found some of the new angles on the core BS story to be well worth it.

I think it's good they do it like this. You expected greater reward for bad deed but it turn out the game just lie to you. I go bad end first thinking do harvest for better reward, for survival then I did another run for good ending and found out reward are roughtly the same. I killed all of them for nothing.

@@wanchaiphukerd3422 That's a good way to look at it, I like it. I was hoping for an impactful implementation of the temptation of evil. "Being good is hard, just step on this inconsequential NPC and be empowered!" We usually only get stuff like that at the end of the game as the Big Final Decision. Having to make the choice repeatedly throughout and it actually making a difference each time would have been nice.

Loved Bioshock, 2 was okay, didn't have that same feeling, however, infinite takes everything to the next level

Just picked up Bioshock 2 today, Arkane was involved some, so it couldn't be any more ho-hum in the level design department (and gameplay options). Yes, you heard that right. Bioshock is (and was in 2007 already) a fairly mediocre and fast paced corridor shooter saved by its setting and plot (with some Shock 2 leftover gimmicks attached), clearly something Irrational didn't have hugely much experience in. Reason being that the game started out as an FPS/RPG proper, but was tuned to be something else when their playtesters didn't "get" it. The Post Mortem on Gamedeveloper tells a part of that story still. No wonder that Infinite went all the way, a completely on rails experience of mowing down enemy after enemy. Bioshock 2 is mostly more of the same though. Except it is even more linear as there's points of no return everywhere. But the level design at least seems to better exploit the magic, eh, plasmids a tad more. I think I'll play it through once for the unique setting -- and then, just as Bioshock, forget about it. Man, even the recent System Shock remake offers more. And they didn't "modernize" much. Granted, would any of the Shock games prior focused on combat this much, they would have gotten old quickly too. (Which luckily, they didn't). Not for doing that, mind. Straight shooters are fine... as long as the shooting bangs and is as fun as in an actually... well made shooter.

I think the combat is just a product of its time, it was awesome when it first came out. I replayed it a couple years ago and I can see how it is a bit dated now but I still enjoyed it. Also without knowing the impact of your choice to sacrifice or save the little sisters you really did feel the weight of choice, and I felt that weight a lot especially when I sacrificed every last one of them; When I replayed it as an adult and I saved them all it was a redemptive experience. It's certainly not pleasant to take their lives, and the morality of a promise of power without context was a big part of the choice.

Bioshock can be considered in the pantheon of the classics. The subegenre it belongs to is Immersive Sim, and although Bioshock is in the low spectrum (not enough player choice vs Deus Ex for example), it emphasizes the other elements which are emergent gameplay, visual worldbuilding and sense of player agency. Thus an Immersive Sim game. The artstyle is very evocative and its probably Bioshock's main strength (art-deco). Gameplay is decent/serviceable but not the best. The reveal at the end is awesome (for an FPS). Lastly, Bioshock ;along with many other Immersive Sim games (ex Prey, Deathloop); have the code 451 as the first door code, a reference to System Shock's first door code.

@@nifftbatuff676 Regardless where they are in the spectrum, the developers and the community considers them. Bioshock is even considered the spiritual successor to System shock by Levigne, Bioshock's key dev and dev who also worked in S.Shock. Hybrid (the industry term) didnt even exist back then & it is a recent term invention.
