this album leaves me nearly speechless. One thing I can say for certain is that the introduction of "As the Sun Kissed the Horizon" and its transition into "Poa Alpina" is unlike any other ambient album i know of. They suck you in like a slowly rotating whirlpool.

“Kobresia” is the track that caused me to purchase substrata some years ago, and I immediately fell in love with the rest.

The quality content that you've been delivering so far is fantastic. Listening to you talk about records makes me want to sort out the shit with my life. It's just great to hear you move through these reviews with a very clear procedural narrative.

This is my favourite Biosphere album. It's desolate and beautiful. I also thought the clattering noise was the sound of someone rummaging through bits and pieces, but it's actually is the sound of a melting glacier.

I like how you said that Substrata is a record that requires attention and one that you get more out of if you pay attention to it. Substrata is my favorite Ambient album of all time and I find it to be a very unique experience for Ambient music and one that is weirdly exciting. I tend to describe it as an exciting Ambient album but I prefer your description. It's a busy Ambient album with a lot going on in the details. Like you said, it keeps you on your toes and I like how that clashes with the nature of the genre it works in. Great video!

Great choice for an essential! I haven't listened to this album in a long time, and didn't realize the Twin Peaks stuff when I first listened to it (I hadn't watched Twin Peaks at the time). Thanks for another great video!

I finally got around to listening to this this week, and now I can't stop listening to it daily, damn. What an ambient masterpiece, it's amazing. Amazing review, friend. About that sound in the final minute of the album (which also appears at the end of The Things I Tell You) is almost certainly a recording of a fireplace. You can hear the high pitched snapping sounds of the wood crackling, and also the low pitched sounds of the wood moving and settling a bit. I absolutely love these fire sounds, they're so cozy!

I unintentionally predicted this review! lol Actually this album got me through a really rough period. N-Plants too. Thank you Geir, you got me through some real shit for sure!

Nothing puts me in a mood of pure cosmicity (i dunno if that's even a word) like Kobresia, with that Russian psychic gently carressing my eardrums

yeah N-Plants is great too, also his most recent release Departed Glories

How do you talk for 10 minutes about an Ambient record? Apparently that's how. Can't wait to listen to it.

So glad you covered this album, it's such a a distinct entry into the genre and it's easily up there with the greats. First experience was on a thirty hour coach trip and I'll never forget listening to Substrata while traversing endless motorways.

Hi, new subscriber here from Norway. Just discovered your channel by this video and I'm stoked to see what you deliver in the future. And of course, this is one of my favourite ambient albums of all time (others include: Carbon Based Lifeforms - World of Sleepers, Lustmord - Heresy & Gas - Gas0095). Also, "Sphere of No-Form" was used in Top Gear in 2005...

I used to work to this record, helped me to concentrate and keep up the pace. Its a heavyweight ambient record, quit ”cold” as mentioned, perfect for the winter season, but you sit inside with a coffe and have a good time.

Jordi Bardají I just recently discovered him, and his massive discography. I’ve picked around through some of it, but it’s a forbiddingly large body of work. I’m definitely enjoying it, though. I was very surprised that with all his albums, I’d never once heard of him. Underrated indeed. ✌🏼

Sony DPS-R7 and Akai s3000 (Classic). Amazing what they did with the kit they had then. Use the Chorus on the Akai with the built in reverb. You start to hear Substrata sound in seconds.

I've been listening to ambient and dark ambient for years, but just found this album and artist. It's now one of y favorite ambient albums. The only one I can think of remotely similar are Recordings from the Aland Islands, Jeremiah Chu and Honer, and Il Sogno Di Un Piano Vneziano a Parigi, Alio Die and Festina Lente. Kobresia is my favorite track and I associate it always with the love of my life, my crazy polish nurse

Probably one of the most consistent Ambient style albums ever recorded. From one piece to the next the albums flows in a very magical way...where upon you feel overwhelmed by its presence. A couple of pieces are actually bewitching. A real journey

Yes , Im a huge fan of Biosphere, Microgravity and Patschnik are essential for me since they were released, Substrata, the last time I gave it a go didnt seem so important. But I respect your opinion, so I must dig up that copy of Substrata again.... Thanks for mentioning that Geir Jenson lives in the Artic, for me that is so magickal. It is like Pete Namlook living in the country, or Steve Roach living in the Arizona desert- for me it just seems like folks that live in such specific places are more authentic as artists... On a side note, speaking of Pete Namlook, I love Fires Of Ork 2, a collaboration with Namlook and Geir Jenson kzbin.info/aero/PLB7CFD78780240EEE
