My brother's ex-wife's half-brother recommended this album to me during a very awkward rehearsal dinner. I was only 15 at the time and mostly listened to emo and metalcore. He told me "listen to it. You may not like it and that's fine. Put it away for a couple years and check it out again later." Sure enough, I tried it at 15 and didn't care enough to keep listening. Tried it again around 19, and still didn't care much. Then at 22 I listened again and couldn't believe what I had passed up.

amazing that you kept with it. they're a great band. and you did it right, stayed persistent. i can't say that at age 15 i would have known what the hell to do with a band like can. of course, now, they're one of my favorite all-time bands. it's not a stretch to say they're one of the most influential bands of all time. that's because the music is incredible.

That last part about Damo not liking the direction of the band kinda makes me wish I hadn't brought up this album and Tago Mago to him when briefly had a smoke with him in Glasgow. He called it "ancient history" - direct quote haha. Chill and insightful guy though! What a legend

Maybe it's just because I'm not a drummer, but I usually don't notice distinct "styles" with the drummers in most bands(not counting hip hop and electronic producers of course), but Jaki's playing is instantly recognizable to me, he has a style that's completely his own, which seems rare for drummers

Hey, I agree that the Damo Suzuki period was absolutely great, but we should not forget the two and a half Malcom Mooney albums. Monster Movie (their debut) is a very good record, especially "You Doo Right" and "Mary, Mary So Contrary". Then their actual debut album which they didn't release until 1981 which is called Delay. "The Thief" and "Butterfly" are my hightlights on that one. And Malcom was on two songs of their Soundtracks album. "Mother Sky" (with Damo) is one of CAN's best songs of all time.

Ah, yas, Oliver! Such an essential record! Glad you’re doing this one! I had no idea “Spoon” was released as a single *before* the albu, though, I did know it was a single, and a hit in the UK at that, which has always blown my mind. Seriously, it’s a great track, but how the hell did that become a hit! I wish American’s had such refined tastes... Favorite tracks: “I’m So Green”, “One More Night”, and “Vitamin C”, but they’re all pretty good, except “Soup” which I gotta admit is just okay imo. They did this same kind of jam/instrumental way better on other albums. It does detract from the whole “more accessible album” thing, as you said, but seriously, even without “Soup” calling this album “accessible” is extremely relative to the albums that proceeded it. By any other standard, it ain’t that, even if it does have a few very catchy hooks. Really, “Egi Bamyasi”, “Tago Mago”, and “Future Days” are basically interchangeable, as far as greatness. I admittedly probably like “Future Days” the more than any other CAN album, as a whole album (it’s flow is perfect), but this album and “Tago” have my favorite CAN tracks. You should do “essential” takes on all of them, man! Cheers ✌🏼

Err, sorry to be pedantic etc but Holger stopped playing bass after 'Landed' but remained in the band doing electronics/radiowaves until '77 then also had a hand in the last official album, 'Can' in 79. 'Ege Bamyasi' was the first album of theirs I bought in I think nov. '72? elsewhere in the comments for 'Vitamin c' on u-tube a helpful turkish person tells us that ege bamyasi is turkish for 'aegean okra' which I never knew in all these 46 years...the story goes that Damo found the artefact itself in a turkish restaurant during the last days as the band neared the dreaded deadline that you mentioned, solving the problem at least of entitling it. Thanks for your enthusiasm for something that is so special, both to me and seemingly to a still increasing number of devotees.

I know you asked not to have too many comments about pronunciation, but there's only one I see here so far, so I thought I'd just clarify it. ;) Turkish is actually quite easy for pronunciation, since letters are always pronounced 100% the same way (no different sounds for the same letter in different contexts), as such the "e"s are pronounced like the "e"s in 'eh', and the "a"s are pronounced like the "u" in "bum" or "up". As for the dotless "i", it's not really a sound you find much in English, but you got it pretty close in your pronunciation anyway. Anyways, sorry about that; love Can, love Ege Bamyasi and still looking to get further into Krautrock since it's one of the genres I'm still pretty fresh too. Really glad for vids like this, as well as your channel in general. Been really helpful!

Just a small correction: Irmin Schmidt didn't use a synthesizer in Can. He only used a Farfisa organ and a Farfisa electric piano, with the expection of Aumgn, where he used oscillators. The sound in Spoon that you mentioned is the organ.

Hey Oliver, have you heard of the Argentinian prog rock band Bubu? They released their only album (Anabelas) in the 70s, but came back with an EP in 2016 and later this year they should be releasing a new full-length album, as their fb page claims: facebook.com/BubuResplandor/ I got recommended to listen to Anabelas because Frances the Mute is one of my favorite albums. Seeing as you liked that record too, you should definitely give Bubu's short discography a listen if you haven't, and maybe consider talking about the new project (if it actually comes true) in the monthly roundup section!

Huge fan of Can, I love Tago Mago, Future Days and Soon Over Babaluma. However I don't think this is a classic, it's a high near perfection album and it's still one of my favourites.
@TheStrongBoyz196 жыл бұрын
For me personally a classic album has everything perfect with no flaws and I consider is to be one of the best albums of all time. Near perfect ones for me are albums with 90% things perfect but with some flaws but still one of my big favourites however not considering it to be a classic.
@TheStrongBoyz196 жыл бұрын
That's just what I think. I agree with the things you said. There are albums that I consider classics for what they are in my mind musically and lyrically. There are some I don't consider classics but hugely respect and understand the impact and influence on them like Nevermind as you mentioned also others like The Velvet Underground and Nico, Ziggy Stardust and many more. I respect your honesty about it.

@floris19124 жыл бұрын
Which Foals/current albums do you think are deserving to be on this list?
@floris19124 жыл бұрын
In my mind, Foals is one of those mediocre "indie, but actually mainstream" artists that only got popular, because they were featured in a Fifa soundtrack. Or is this thought totally wrong? I have only listened to their album What Went Down several times in the past, so I probably can't really judge them.
