Biot is located between Cannes and Nice, it borders the city of Antibes. Biot makes up, with Antibes, Le Bar sur Loup, Valbonne, Vallauris and other communes [archive] Sophia-Antipolis, the first technology park in Europe with more than 30 thousand employees in high technology.
Like most municipalities on the Alpes-Maritimes coast, the territory of Biot has yielded vestiges of an ancient occupation. The greatest number relates to the Roman period.
Shaded alleys, picturesque arches, flowery cobbled streets and stone buildings give Biot its authentic character. Sunny terraces, gourmet restaurants, artists' galleries, refined boutiques: Biot promises real moments of pleasure. It is said that a famous restaurant with red-checked tablecloths jealously hides in its period cellars a collection of works of art by great artists who love Biot...
The church of Biot, classified as a Historic Monument in 1984, was rebuilt in the 15th century, at the same time as the village, on the ruins of an old Romanesque church from the 12th century, itself probably built on a Roman sanctuary.
Place des Arcades is located in the center of the first castrum of Biot. This square was the seat of the Templars. Then the new population from Liguria surely gave it part of the look we know today.
Rectangular in shape, the square is delimited in its volumetry by a frame of two or even three floors in places. Along the length of the square are semicircular or pointed arcades, revealing a covered passage. This provides access to the shops on the ground floor or to the accommodation located on the upper floors. Some doors date from the 16th century.
Since 1956, Biot has become a reference in the world of glass blowing. Our specificity: bubble glass, the technique of which was initiated by the engineer Éloi Monod, who then trained a whole generation of craftsmen and artists. Today, glass works of art are not only the pride of the village, but also its reputation.Indeed, from the end of the 1950s, Éloi Monod adopted the bubbled glass technique, known as “malfin”, which consists in transforming a defect into a quality: intentionally imprisoned, the bubble becomes an aesthetic asset… From now on, it is these bubbles, skilfully redesigned, which made the reputation of the village of Biot in the world of blown glass.
