Hi Guys,
Navigating a career and job with bipolar disorder can be challenging. Some of us either choose not to work or are on disability but many of us are still able to have very successful careers. Unfortunately because of my inability to monitor my symptoms with medication my work history is horrible but with the proper medication, counseling and good lifestyle choices your story doesn't have to be as challenging as mine was.
I’m Steph and I have bipolar disorder type 1 with psychotic features and mixed episodes. What that means is that not only do I have extreme shifts in mood and hypomania but I also experience psychosis and have manic episodes where I am basically happy, angry and sad all at the same time. I experience delusions, visual and auditory hallucinations, and paranoia.
I do this channel for a few reasons but basically I want to help people understand how to have loving relationships with their bipolar friend or loved one. I want to build a community and it helps me talking to other people about my experience and I really hope it helps you.
Please let me know your thoughts and subscribe. Your comments make me want to make more videos and make me feel less alone.
In today's video I talk about Bipolar Disorder and how it affects work. Being able to have a career as someone with Bipolar can include extra challenges. I want to share my story and my work history with you so you can see just how challenging it can be and how Bipolar symptoms can ruin a career pretty quickly.
IN 2021 25% of disability benefits were going to those with a psychiatric disability. Some of us have such severe illnesses that we can’t work at all.
Managing the workplace for someone with Bipolar is difficult because there are some of us with such debilitating depression that we are physically unable to get out of bed to get to work and miss a lot of days. I had a lot of people on my channel talk about how they’ve lost another job because of their symptoms or how hard it is to function in the work place just with interpersonal relationships with coworkers anxiety and stress. But there is more to the story that can happen and so that is why I want to share my work history with you to give you an example of how quickly a career can go down in flames.
Here are some other videos you might find helpful and please check out my original music. You can navigate by using the playlist tab where I have everything from unboxings to roller skating but my most important videos are my bipolar manic life vlogs and my original music since a lot of it is inspired by my struggle with Bipolar Disorder and Relationships.

Steph, This video speaks volumes. I won’t lie I cried the whole video because of how this parallels my own personal experiences so much. I am still trying to figure out my early hypomania episodes that resulted in some off experiences but when I was put on three different anti-depressants all at once and my doctor didn’t read the bipolar signs not only did I lose my townhouse, went bankrupt from over spending by almost $90k, and then there was my job history. I was someone who would stick with a job for years and that was me. I gave 2-4 weeks notice when leaving and here I ended up with 7 different jobs in less than a year and most of which I either just walked out on or gave less than a weeks notice. It was so uncharacteristic of me. I feel so much shame about my job history. Especially with regards to the company I did my best at. I got 5 promotions in 3.5 years doubled my salary and left and moved out of state. Got another great high paying job as a property manager for a luxury apartment building and struggled the whole time with mania. After I left that job in Jan of ‘23 I went downhill. Lasted three weeks at my job that paid $100k+bonuses. Went to another property, last 3 months. Went to a hotel and became a caregiver. I never slept for more that 2-3 hours a day for over 6 months. I just worked worked work and screamed at everyone. It was awful. Left those jobs for one job, last 6 weeks there. Went to a hotel and transferred to a new one 3 months later and here I am. Now I am a full time night auditor at a hotel where I have less interaction with people but I know that if I go manic again and a guest starts getting aggressive with me, I’ll probably walk out or yell back. I know this (in my right mind) is not the way to handle things but as mentioned, your brain just takes over and you literally go psychotic. I have been having mixed episodes up until about a month ago. My depakote was recently upped and that has help tremendously. I hope to stay on track where I am for awhile but I'm barely making ends meet and am definitely make 1/3 of what I made before. Thanks again Steph for making these videos, they really help me feel less alone, especially when reading through the comments.

Unfair, that's what Bipolar is completely unfair. We are at the mercy of doctors in a broken system. I hope one day in the future doctors become more careful about subscribing SSRI's they've hurt so many of us with BP1. I hope the new job works out and the depakote keeps working, thank you so much for your support and sharing your story it means a lot to me and anyone reading. ❤️

First off, yes, you definitely make us (well, at least me) feel like we're not alone. Thank you for all you do. Keep going! You were the first person I stumbled across and your videos have Really helped me. So thank you! I'm 34 and just got diagnosed this March. Last year I had a BIG mania w/ psychosis episode that lasted 8 months. It was horrible. I got a VERY noticeable face tattoo, arrested 3 times, and a lot more. Second, yeah. it definitely took a toll on my job. I worked for the county I live in for 2 years but it got really bad once my bipolar 1 kicked in for the first time. I live in a tiny community and lets just say a very good percentage of the population here has totally different opinions of me now. So much that I can't get a job anywhere. At least where I live. It's honestly kinda hard to even go out in public now. I'm still at the beginning of my recovery so I have hope that things will get better. You really do help more than you know. Thank you. Have a great one, and YEAH! UPLOAD MORE VIDEOS!!!!! xD Keep going, dude. You rock.

Thank you for sharing this and your support! Man I never even thought of tattoos being a mania left over! It will get better I was humiliated going back to work but if I take a step back anyone judging me they were the one with the problem. It's really is unfair an illness makes people think that's who we are but forget about them I think if you keep trying you'll find someone to give you a break. It does get better with time. ❤️

Hey Just watched your whole video. Thank you for sharing your experience and struggles, i resonate deeply. I'm in the same age bracket as you, and my history with work and school has been tumultous. I had my first episode around 17-18 right before college, then was hospitalized for about a month. I would have 1-3 different jobs in a year, longest job I held was retail for 3 yrs as I finished my bachelors (which debilitated my mental health in hindsight due to awful managers). Then one day I had enough and quit, just like some of my previous other jobs. Never cared about 2 weeks notices, struggle with coworkers etc. Took nearly a decade to muster up courage to finish college as well. Just recently got a diagnosis for bipolar, depression, ptsd and anxiety. Meanwhile Im just doing uber for the sake of mental health while looking into SSI on the side. Anyway sorry for the rant, I thought I was the only one with these hardships. This illness is no joke and can hit us any time. The hardest part for me was accepting it as I continue educating myself on it. I'm glad I found this video and channel, you got my sub. much love

Also: I'm curious to know your thoughts on diet, nutrition, and metabolism when it comes to mental illness. Some people have had great results by simply changing how they eat. Others claim it didn't help at all. I dont have bipolar, but my mental health definitely improved Once i cleaned up my diet. Would you be willing to speak on that?

McDonald's was my first job as well, where i got sick for the first time and had to leave! The inner personal dialogue and circular thinking takes so much energy..I actually never connected it to BD. You say that episodes like this dont have to happen if you're on meds. etc but in the end you say for some of us it have to happen. I think that is a good way to put it. Meds,therapy,staying sober,work out,getting enough sleep etc. Is great But its not a 100% guarantee. If the madness wanna come thru the door it will make it. And when it worked itself all the way up to where medicine routine falls out,then all hell can break loose. Anyway, if you're BD Take meds ,Stay sober and Stay connected...and keep the candles lit! ❤

My Stepfather had a Bipolar sister (ironically she was his most pleasant relatives, when sane). Her husband was a Beer Drinking in front of the TV grouch (he was also a devout Catholic that got her pregnant when she was in a Manicy Phase and that's how the end of getting married). My mother claims one occasion she encountered him at the local VFW hall, he was very charming, extroverted and "Mr. Twinkle Toes!" So in truth he had his own psychiatric issue also. Only met him as the grouch in front of the TV and her when she was able to function. One time when she was "Off the wagon," she asked my step dad's mechanically inclined cousins if they had a wheel for her (non-existent) Lamborghini. This is commemorated by having a picture of a Lamborghini on her wall after incident.

I had to quit work this year due to a major depressive episode in 2022 that landed me in hospital for ten weeks. I had switched medication because the old one i was on for 10 years wasn't working as well as it used to anymore. As someone on the autism spectrum I've been on disability most of my life and did a little bit of part-time work where I can, in things I'm interested in. I have always been socially awkward. Seemingly the most Painful of these were attempts at "Intimate" relationships (given the average "Available" female person out there, it's probably just as well) I've never felt like I could pursue an intimate relationship with anybody I wanted to be involved with. My father was a bisexual and pedophile (in spite of being very conservative) hand had sexual expeditions involved male work colleagues and he Blackmailed an older cousin into some flings. In my awkward communication style and possibly having absorbed some sexual predator behavior from my own father it's helped keep me out of relationships. Not that I have sexually assaulted anyone but I feel like I give off "That Vibe." I remember when I was in my later grade school and early teen years, (I can't say that he totally neglected me but he largely did) and he would always tell me about how "Your dad needs a woman!" And later essentially an late teen and early adult (probably when he was probably not as sexually functional anymore) he wanted to be a father again! When this time I had been exposed to some mentors and things I was interested in. During my mother's first year of being remarried I lived with him again and it was torture. He'd talk to me like I was some kind of juvenile heroin addict or something like that, to become my guidance counselor from being almost totally not in my life. Part of this was that I developed my own political opinions based on being out in the world extended I could be and not in the family bubble. But it wouldn't be until I was in my forties and I finally learned about the autism spectrum issues. I always knew I was learning disabled. My initial clumsy attempts at dating Percy the Suzuki cause I didn't find any members of the opposite sex I was interested until I started attending Junior college, where I encountered young women who were interested in the same things I was interested in. I always filled I would have better luck "Being Chosen" than trying to "Choose" somebody (again concerns about my father's sexual predator vibes). I even took a class that was the "Sociology of Relationships, Marriage snd Family" and what I needed was a "Sociology of Relationships, Marriage and Family for people on the autism spectrum with sexually abusive fathers" class.

It's both a relief and frustrating to find out there's a reason why we are so different. I'm seeing the world take more notice of those on the autism spectrum and with the internet and communities being built I see progress. So much trauma stays with us from childhood it's good you are facing yours head on. Thank you so much for sharing your story. ❤️ I'm sorry about your Dad. Hi! 😁 When I am manic I can't focus long enough to do anything and there is little need to work out because my metabolism jumps through the roof when I'm manic. I'm usually furiously putting things together, cleaning or making plans I will never follow through on. Full mania I'm psychotic and more concerned about people being after me than working out. But yes everytime you work out your brain releases endorphins making you happier. It also decreases stress hormones and activates parts of the brain and releases chemicals that improve mood. It lowers your risk of cognitive decline and so much more. What we put in our body and how we move it significantly affects ones level of happiness. I am barely starting to realize how mandatory cardio exercise is for a healthy mind. ❤️

Totally agreed. A video would be cool,take youre time(if you do it). When he says that he have two friends with BP After telling Joe that it was almost impossible to be friends with bipolars. Its like him bragging "well for normal people its impossible, but you know,for me, fucking Rambo , everything is possible" What a idiot.... Some guy had a comment and asked if other BP reacted on the video, i sendt him this answer : "I Can not believe that Joe Rogan let him get away with that. " To have a relationship with someone that are bipolar is almost impossible, to have a romantic relationship with someone that are bipolar is even thousand times harder" To leave something like that unsaid on a podcast that reach millions of people is really, really bad. Its so stigmatizing and can be really hurtful listening for anyone struggling with BP. Especially when Joe doesn't question it and accept it as the truth (when its not). If Bipolar would be a ethnicity this would be considered hardcore Racism. There been so many guest's on his show that have bipolar and i'm pretty sure Joe also have friends struggling with this that he is aware of.. And those people have friends ..and relationship's. Also...worth to mention, If Roagan podcast has 14.5 million listeners.. Then likely around 37 000 of them would have bipolar. Roagan was a coward this time.

How do you know if you have brain damage? Reason I'm asking is that I have been wanting to get a brain scan of myself but they claim it doesn't "show anything" 😞
@BipolarPerson
@BipolarPerson 3 ай бұрын
I just believe I do because I spent a long time in mania and after the last episode my memory is really bad. I forget to ask my psychiatrist about it. Doctors don't use brain scans to diagnose but there is evidence that shows a decrease in grey matter in the brains of bipolar individuals. So the longer one is in mania or depression the more grey matter goes away and the more damage is done.

May I ask how much money is disability in the USA? In Greece it is only 338€ and you are allowed to work part-time (if you can) for reasons of social integration.

It is not very much. I don't know how much it is but it is not very much. But there are things like housing vouchers which will get you much lower rent. You can still work too but you can't make more than 10k a year.

Oh no! I'm sorry. It really depends on the person but if he is in a facility and taking medication sometimes the medication can take a month to work and that's good he's getting help.

Never could I hold a job. I did have a business where my employees were working for me and I really didn’t have to do much. I wouldn’t have a disability check coming if it wasn’t for my girls. (Employees) my back is why I’m getting it. I don’t know why I didn’t report the severity of my mental health. My first job after I got my first car was throwing papers. lol. I’m better away from others.

Maybe because of Imposter Syndrome a lot of people Bipolar have it. Where we think our symptoms are not as bad as they are or we are "faking it." For exampe if you don't self harm you might think "I'm not bipolar enough." I just learned about it a few years ago.

Hi!! I don't think I have brain fog but I have a really hard time paying attention going into thought so deep in my head I don't even hear what someone is saying to me. The thing that helps me with that is meditation. The best thing to do too is always convey any side effects you might be experiencing to your doctor. I hope this hekps. 😁

Dendrites are cellular extensions found in the neurons, or nerve cells. This suggests that depression changes may be reversible and the brain can heal.
