Great build Ali. Regarding the seat being a bit too high, I had the same issue when I built my hardtail. Solved it by trimming some excess length off the seat tube and allow the collar to sit a bit lower, which it looks like you might have room to do unless the post hits the bend in the frame.

Stunning build. Especially love the raw frame- I can't stand these wimpy pastel colors of late. One tech thing; lubing threads is always recommended but, I thought getting lube between the nipple seat and the rim was top priority as well- thoughts? Time for a shred vid. Cheers!
@Ali_Clarkson3 ай бұрын
Glad you’re keen! So I’ve always been under the impression that getting lube between spoke heads and rim was a big no no. My teacher learned from Sheldon Brown so I guess he said not to do it…I vaguely remember that it can encourage spokes to come loose but how true that is I don’t know. It’s probably one of those things that doesn’t actually matter, I don’t lube the contact and my wheels are fine but I’m sure if they’re built well they’d still be fine if I had lubed it.

The polygon seems like a great bike for the price…some of the spec is similar (SLX group, similar (but shorter) post etc), even the suspension is decent but the bird with my spec has better suspension, better wheels (hope hubs vs shimano), better brakes (even with my upgraded Hayes ones), you’re also getting a lengthy warranty, hand built wheels and a fully hand built bike in the UK etc

@@Ali_Clarkson I do lots of miles touring in, into and around the Scottish highlands. I carry a lot of weight, usually 2-3 weeks supplies plus tent and equipment and comprehensive toolkit and spares So shaving ounces with carbon reinforced plastic (let's call it what it is CRP) would produce pointless marginal gains, as well as a fragile bike It's horses for courses I guess Been using an alloy frame, steel fork and rim brakes for years. An entire new drive train comes in at £80 over the counter, that's 42-32-22 and 11-34 which gives me ratios comparable to this 1* fad nonsense. But that's important because I wear them out regularly through both use and abuse - the terrain I cover is often punishing, I get through a pair of wheel rims a year So, what *would* I pay? I guess I'd go up to £3k, but that would have to be a Rohloff hub gear and a belt drive with decent hydro disc brakes and I'd expect the frame to be titanium for that. As it stands I've probably spent half that in five years on running the bike I've got
@Ali_Clarkson2 ай бұрын
@@ΑΣΔΦΓΗΞΚΛ we’re definitely doing different things (though I am about to do a series on building a bike as cheap as possible, finding an abandoned frame, using a local bike charity to find used parts etc) so your budget will definitely be different than most serious MTBers. For a full-suss frame that’s got a well designed linkage, build and geometry you’re not going to find anything new for under 1.5k, add decent suspension and that’s another 1-1.5k, powerful discs are a few hundred…good wheels probably another £500 at the absolute minimum and then all the other gear and you’re very quickly at that 3k margin. Sure you can get cheaper but for 3k you’re getting something very very good and will last longer. My last bike was over 8k and I honestly think that’s getting a bit ridiculous especially when this bike rides just as well at nearly a third of the price. Also I don’t agree that carbon is “plastic”…it’s in the name, it’s mostly carbon.
